1 Authority 1. How is all Scripture given? 2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."

2. How is Scripture profitable and useful? 2 Timothy 3:16 (See above)

3. To what can the Scripture lead us? 2 Timothy 3:15 "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

4. What does Scripture do for the man of God? 2 Timothy 3:17 "That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."

(Perfect, in this verse means mature, complete, competent and equipped to be used by God.) 5. A man of God who know the Scriptures can be equipped for how many good works? 2 Timothy 3:17 (See above)

6. Since the Bible is sufficient to lead us to salvation and to equip us for every good work, do we need manmade religious inventions to help God out? 7. What are we to pay attention to in 2 Peter 1:19? 2 Peter 1:19 "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts."

8. How were men moved when they gave us prophecy or the Scripture? 2 Peter 1:21 "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."

9. What did Paul appeal to as the source of his authority? Romans 4:3 "For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness."

10. What did Jesus appeal to as a source of authority when He taught men? Luke 24:27 "And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself."

11. What did Jesus appeal to in His conquest over Satan? Matthew 4:4-7 "4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."

12. Why did Jesus rebuke the Sadducees? Matthew 22:29 "Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God."

What about Tradition? 1. What did the tradition of the Scribes and Pharisees cause them to do to the commandments of God? Mark 7:8 "For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do."

2. What kind of worship will the doctrines or dogmas of men produce? Mark 7:7 "Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."

3. What did traditions do to the commandment and Word of God? Matthew 15:6b "Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition." Mark 7:13 "Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."

4. What do men who have turned from the truth invent? Titus 1:14 "Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth."

5. What can philosophy and tradition do to us? Colossians 2:8 "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."

(When food is spoiled it is good for nothing!)

What About Experience? 1. Were the sorcerers and magicians able (by the power of Satan) to turn their rods into serpents? Exodus 7:10-12 "10And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent. 11Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. 12For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods."

Comment: I’m sharing this because I want you to see that Satan has power. In this section of Scripture the sorcerers and magicians were able to perform the first three miracles in the power of Satan that Moses and Aaron did in the power of God. (After the third miracle, God stopped them.) Now follow me. 2. In 2 Corinthians 11:4 God teaches us that even a believer can receive another _____________________________ another ______________________________ another______________________________. 2 Corinthians 11:4 "For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him." You have to judge all experience by the Bible. (Galatians 1:6 also) 3. What was the one tree that Adam was not allowed to eat of in the Garden? Genesis 2:17 "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

4. Did Satan lie about God’s Word? Read Genesis 2:17 again. (above) Now read Genesis 3:4-5 "4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."

5. Did the woman believe Satan’s lie? Genesis 3:6 "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat."

6. What does God say in John 8:44 about Satan? John 8:44 "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do: he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." “…when he speaketh a ____________, he speaketh of his own: for he is a ___________________, and the father of it.” Comment: The following incident illustrates the importance of the Word of God. Recently two Mormons came to my door. When the cults come, I control the whole situation. I first give them the Gospel. When they reject it, as they always do, I say, “Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal God and had no beginning and will have no end?” On one occasion one Mormon immediately responded to me and said, “yes.” I said, “You are a Mormon and you believe that Jesus Christ is God?” He said, “Yes.” I said very firmly, “Let me repeat myself. “You are a Mormon and you believe that Jesus Christ is God?” He said, “Do you mean The God?” I said, “Yes.” He immediately responded, “Oh, no.” I said, “God’s Word says that I’m not even to give you God’s speed.” I closed the door and went back to hugging and kissing my wife. I know that Mormons don’t believe in the doctrine of the deity of Christ but believe that Jesus had a beginning. I also know that I’m not to give them God’s speed. (2 John 9-11) Always check everything out with what the Bible says. (A Mormon may give you a wonderful smile and a King James Bible as a gift, but theologically they deny the deity of Christ—that He is the eternal Son of God—and they are not to be trusted!)

7. In 2 John:10, we are told that if anyone does not bring to you the doctrine of Christ (verse 9) which includes that fact that He is eternal ("whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting" Micah 5:2), what are you to do? 2 John 10 "If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God-speed."

8. Name three reasons given for Eve’s decision to eat from the tree? Genesis 3:6 "And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat." 1) 2) 3) Comment: On the basis of Eve’s experience that eating from the tree was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and would make her wise, she gave it to her husband. If your experience or some wonderful feeling leads you contrary to the clear teaching of the Word of God, you are not following the God of the Bible. Believe the Word of God. It is our source of authority. We can trust in it.

Conclusion:

The Word of God is the source of authority in every area of our life.
