MINISTER ANNOUNCES CLIMATE CHANGE COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS Some of Canberra’s pre-eminent thinkers on environmental issues will form the ACT’s first Climate Change Council, Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell said today. The Council consists of six members including Professor Will Steffen, Ms Maria Efkarpidis, Doctor Frank Jotzo, Ms Lynne Harwood and Mr David Papps. Professor Barbara Norman is appointed as the Chair of the Council. “It give me great pleasure to announce the first six members of the ACT Climate Change Council which brings together community representatives with a broad range of skills to help identify and address barriers to achieving a dynamic and low carbon economy and society,” Mr Corbell said. “The Government committed to establish a Climate Change Council as part of the Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act 2010, and will create an opportunity for consultation across our community on the important policy debate surrounding climate change and carbon emissions.” Mr Corbell said that different sectors of the community need to work together to achieve the goals of reducing Canberra’s carbon footprint. “This is not a job the Government can do on its own, and this council will play an important role in coordinating discussion and providing advice to Government on the path forward to achieve emissions reduction targets,” Mr Corbell said. “Government, community and business need to work together to address climate change, identify opportunities and be recognised as leaders in sustainable urban development in Australia. Some areas of focus for the council include social, economic and environmental issues, and Australian and international practices or developments in climate change The Council includes members with expertise in the energy sector, transport planning, social equity, built environment, environmental management and climate science, as well as people who understand business and community interests. “I would like to thank all of the people who have agreed to take up positions on this important Climate Change Council and look forward to seeing some of the work that the council provides to the ACT Government,” Mr Corbell said.
