Black history month!
October 2012 marks the 25th Black History Month in the UK and continuing in the spirit of the jubilee and the Olympics the theme for this year is celebration! What ever you have planned to mark this month, managing your money can help ensure the celebrations last through the month and beyond. We asked regular readers of Pride from the Financial Ombudsman Service - the free service set up by law to sort out problems between consumers and financial businesses - who inspires them and for their top tips on taking control of your finances.

Top tip:
My top tip is if you’re using an interest free deal to make a purchase keep a record of when the interest free period ends, as repayments after this date can be very expensive!

Top tip: I always look online for information about the best rates available for insurance policies. Find a deal that works for you – but remember cheaper isn’t always better!

My modern day influence would be my parents. My late father always told me to work while you work, play while you play and always aim high.
My inspiration is Barack Obama, I did not think that I would ever see a black head of state in the Western world. It shows that if you work hard towards a goal your opportunities are endless.
My mum is a big influence on everything I do but another one would be Oprah Winfrey. She has risen above impossible situations and rejects any notions that the colour of your skin should prohibit you from excelling.

My advice is to shop around for the best deals on products or Top tip: Ask your bank for a list of purchases – a simple internet search may your regular payments and keep an eye on find you a cheaper alternative or money off your statements. If you’re paying for things vouchers to save you a fortune. you don’t recognise or use, cancel them.
