water - part of your lifestyle

water are you getting You’re not gasping. So that must mean you drink enough water It might surprise you but many of us are slightly dehydrated. Very few of us drink the right amount of water to keep our bodies in tip-top condition. Which means that many of us are probably operating below our physical and mental best, for a lot of the time. So, why do we need water? For starters, it’s the essential fuel that helps our bodies function. After all, we are three quarters water, so without it, we wouldn’t amount to much at all. Water keeps us going: it makes up 95% of our blood, which carries oxygen and nutrients to all our organs; it helps regulate our body temperature, by enabling us to sweat; it also eliminates waste and

toxins – whilst all the time giving us energy and helping us concentrate.

person to know, because good hydration is important for fresh breath.

Water’s important for the way we look as well. Because it is calorie free, it can help you stay in shape. Your skin benefits too: no moisturiser (however expensive), can work its wonders without a bit of inner hydration. And finally, water can simply make you a more pleasant

So how much should we aim to drink, to make sure we’re keeping our body functioning as it should? Two litres a day. Just 8 glasses. Not so difficult when you think about all the good it does.

enough? everyday, right?

water don’t wait until How often do you get thirsty? A few times a day?

Without water though, we couldn’t last more than a few days.

05

you’re thirsty Thirst is actually a complex warning signal that’s designed to let you know you body needs water. It’s a sign that it’s dehydrated, and is starting to get you ready to rehydrate. The key is not to let your body get to the “I’m gasping” stage. Think about when you’re looking after a plant for example. You don’t wait until it’s completely wilted before you water it. You give it a bit of water regularly, to keep it moist and hydrated. It’s the same with your body.

What you should be doing, is hydrating your body all the time – not simply quenching thirst. We lose over 2 litres of water a day, even when we’re sleeping. In fact, we shed almost a litre every 24 hours, just through breathing and perspiration alone (and that’s not even on a hot day). It’s not like we can store it in our bodies in case of a shortage either, like we can with food. The body can potentially go for weeks without eating, drawing on its fat reserves

for sustenance. Without water though, we couldn’t last for more than a few days. That’s why we need to make sure we constantly replenish, and not just wait until we’re feeling dehydrated. (It gets even more important, the older we become too – because as we age, our sensation of thirst diminishes, so we don’t notice so much if we’re thirsty.) So, get started on those 2 litres now and keep your body in tip-top shape.

Spring Water

Other Drinking Water (incl.Tap Water)

is just... water, isn’t it? spring water and tap water available to us, what’s the difference?

There are two main types of bottled water: spring water and mineral water. Spring water is collected directly from the spring where it arises from the ground and must be bottled at the source. It must meet certain hygiene standards, but may be treated in order to meet the EU limits set on pollution. Mineral water is water that emerges from under the ground and then

flows over rocks before it is collected. As a result of this, mineral water has a higher content of various minerals, which are picked up as it flows over rock. Unlike spring water, natural mineral water cannot be treated except to remove grit and dirt. Different brands of spring and mineral waters will contain differing amounts of minerals, depending on where they have been sourced.

Water labels Labels on bottled mineral water are required to state exactly what is in the water and where the water was sourced. It is an offence to market water as natural mineral water unless the water complies with the provisions of the EU Council Directive 80/777/EEC and SI No of 2004.

So how much is ‘enough’? Here’s how much your children should be drinking:

Drinking is just as important as eating – particularly when kids are active. Children are much more susceptible to dehydration and overheating than adults and are less likely to realise they need water. Water is the best option for quenching thirst. Make drinking more fun with a novelty water bottle. Bottles with sports flip tops are handy and easy to drink from. Keep water in easy reach and encourage regular sips.

water

part of your lifestyle

part of your everyday life.

With water making up three quarters of our bodies, it’s part of our lives – literally. So how do we make that vital 2 litres a day a part of our lifestyles too?

Start today.... Make water part of your lifestyle, drink 8 glasses everyday, equivalent to 2 litres.

The 2 litre rule may seem a lot – but when you think of it as eight glasses, spread across a whole day, it’s simply a glass with each meal, three throughout the day, and two more in the evening. To work your 2 litres a day into your lifestyle, it helps to always keep a bottle of water handy; in your car, in your bag, by your bed – and even in your locker, for when you need to override that 3pm energy slump. It's far better to sip water continuously throughout the day

than gulping down several glasses once you're already gasping, so start each day with a bottle of natural mineral water. A bottle on your desk will remind you to keep topped up and help you keep track of your 2ltrs a day target. Drinking 2 litres of water every day, is one of the simplest (yet one of the best) things that you can do for your body. By drinking enough, you can hydrate yourself from the inside-out – and beauty and health experts around the world agree:
