BRIEFLY Siblings airlifted A 16-year-old girl and oneyear-old baby were airlifted to Waikato Hospital for treatment after they had been rescued from a rolled vehicle near Taharoa on Saturday. The siblings were in a vehicle which crashed on the coastal road. St John Ambulance had transported the victims to a safe landing site about two kilometres from the crash site, where they were transferred to the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance.

Final ‘fling’ Kihikihi gardeners have a final chance to spruce up their gardens this week in preparation for judging of the annual Kihikihi Rotary Best Garden Awards. The awards will be judged from the street next week and the top gardens will win their owners prizes sponsored by Ngaroto Nurseries and the Rotary Club.

Saving children Save the Children NZ local branch is staging a fundraising luncheon on November 9. The event will be held at St John’s Church Hall from 11.452pm, including entertainment by local children. For more information contact Alwyn Lenaarts at 871 3276.

Power savers Power saving Ecobulbs are flowing out the doors at Te Awamutu’s Shell service stations (see story page 7). Genesis Energy customers are reminded that they can take their power accounts into the service stations in order to take up the special $10 purchase offer for five Ecobulbs.

Parish fashion A fashion parade at St John’s Church Hall on Wednesday, October 25 is to raise money for upgrading the parish hall kitchen. The event will feature fashions from Postie-Plus, Caroline Eve, Playmates and CBR, modelled by ‘Mainly Music’ mothers, parishioners and children. Tickets to the 7.30pm show are available from the parish office, or by phoning Coral Loomb at 871 5302 or Hazel Robertson at 871 7533.

Pedalling safety message An event likely to see hundreds of cyclists travelling from Te Awamutu Rose Garden to Hamilton Rose Garden is being staged to highlight safety issues for motorists and cyclists. Organiser of Ride4Change, Tui Allen of Te Pahu, has combined her love of cycling and web page design talents to promote the ride. The Rose Garden to Rose Garden ride has been confirmed for November 5. Mrs Allen was motivated to organise the event because she was haunted by the plight of a 17-yearold in Auckland who was recently run off the road by a motorist with a negative attitude. “The boy was left paralysed. “We, here in the Waikato, are sitting at the heart of cycling in New Zealand. We would like to do something in response to this accident/crime or whatever it was and would like it to come from our cycling-mad region. “I want to try to change the negative attitudes and ignorance of some motorists to make the roads safer for cyclists in this country. “It is not a protest ride - it is simply a ride for positive change. We need to change lots of things, such as the traffic abilities of some cyclists - including myself - road design, town planning, etc. “But the main purpose of this ride is to dispel some common myths motorists have and to enlighten people about the sport of cycling to help them better understand us.” Participants can ride all or part of the ride and they will be asked to wear a black armband or ribbon. Mrs Allen says she has been inundated with positive responses, mainly via email, and while somewhat daunted by the organisational requirements, is hoping for a huge turnout on November 5. Link for the web page is www. hamiltonmtb.org.nz/pagefiles/ ride4change.html Meanwhile national cycling organisation BikeNZ has called for nationwide campaigns to educate motorists and cyclists on how to

Recent incidents involving competitive cyclists have included a bunch of riders in Te Awamutu being hit from behind, and Tauranga cyclists being threatened with a baseball bat and assaulted. BikeNZ chief executive, Rodger Thompson says these recent crashes don’t tell us that cycling is necessarily unsafe, but they do show an urgent need for changes in driver and cyclist behaviour. CAN is concerned that driver training and licensing doesn’t deal with this. “Motorists and cyclists both need to use the roads wisely and safely, but motor vehicles pose a much greater risk. That means that motorists have an extra duty of care.” With increasing numbers of

OPEN CHRISTMAS DAY FOR LUNCH

By Grant Johnston Golf loving Wellingtonian Ricky Bartlett is playing all 405 courses in the country in the next year, but he may not find one he likes better than Pirongia. He enjoyed a round at the course on Friday with club captain Charlie Coles - carding a three-under-par 69. It was the 40-year-old Paraparaumu Beach four handicapper’s best ever round. And he’s played a few - 82 since his golfing odyssey began on August 1. Naturally enough, he had nothing but good things to say about the Pirongia course, although to the utter bewilderment of this

writer, he thinks the course is easy (I’ve played a lot of rounds there and never noticed that!). “It’s just a nice, open course with good greens,” he said. He had also enjoyed playing Kawhia and Raglan courses the day before. A cricket development officer, Mr Bartlett is raising money for four charities during his travels - Amnesty International, the Cancer Society, Ronald McDonald House and the SPCA. Just over two months into the project he had raised around $8,000. A $3 donation to the charities can be made by texting golf to 883 or by donating online at www.nzcharitygolftour.co.nz

Course offers new challenge for students By Cathy Asplin Te Awamutu Intermediate students are on the move, thanks to a new $56,000 challenge course which was officially opened at their school last night. It was built to replace the old playground that was constructed by Kiwanis over 15 years ago. PTA chairperson Deborah Kay says the old course was simply worn out and several parts no longer met safety requirements. “However, we were able to salvage some good pieces from it, which have been recycled for the swing area.” The new multi-level playground uses a number of different materials and provides a wide range of physical activities for the students. “We wanted to cater to all levels and provide a challenge for everyone.” Although Mrs Kay no longer has chil-

dren at the school, she was keen to see the project through to completion. “We initially took time to visit other schools to see what they had, how well it was used and what students liked. “It has then taken around three years to accumulate funds for the project. “These funds have come from a number of sources - PTA funds, grants from the Caversham Foundation and Trust Waikato and lots of student fundraising, such as selling chocolates, delivering phonebooks and a pie/pizza drive. “We were also fortunate to have wonderful support from an ex-pupil - Mike van der Hoek of Thomson’s Timber who sponsored the project, as did Bargain Timber and Fencing of Te Awamutu.” The Te Awamutu Kiwanis were again involved in the school project - this time completing the edging around the playground, while assistance was provided

by Waikeria Prison, with helpers clearing the site, laying weed matting and installing cushion fall. The challenge course was supplied and constructed by Sherwood Recreation (Hamilton). Sponsors and supporters gathered with school representatives last night to officially open the playground. Mrs Kay says the project has been very much a community effort and feels sure it will also be enjoyed by the wider school community. Te Awamutu Intermediate deputy principal Jill Shaw says the completion of the project is a credit to the school’s hard working PTA. “They are only a small committee, but they look at what is required, set their goals and focus on the project. The new challenge course is an asset for the school and will be appreciated by students.” STUDENT councillors try out the new challenge course, accompanied by PTA chairperson Deborah Kay (left) and deputy principal Jill Shaw. 290063A/B/CD

Te Awamutu Bridge Club players Bunny Cox and Richard Knight scored decisively in the Novice Tournament hosted by the Matamata Club recently. They scored a blistering 76% in the afternoon session and went on to win the tournament by a healthy 12% margin. This was an excellent effort considering Richard Knight has only been playing six months and Bunny Cox 18 months. In the recent Waitomo Veterans Tournament, Te Awamutu players were hard pressed to get a look in. However, life member Paul Hobbs and his partner collected a session prize in the morning’s play. Lion’s share of Maungatautari Lions from this area have every reason to be proud of the viewing tower they have built in the southern enclosure on Maungatautari. The 16-metre tower affords a close-up view of the grove of 800-year-old rata trees alongside, as well as the forest canopy trees, their epiphytes and the birdlife. The birdlife and forest have flourished following the pest eradication carried out in the enclosure last year. Waikato 202C Area Lions Clubs, including Rosetown, Kihikihi, Ohaupo/ Ngahinapouri, Te Awamutu and Te Awamutu Pakeke, raised over $60,000 to pay for materials. They also supplied voluntary labour needed to erect the impressive tower, along with Maungatautari volunteers

(including project engineer Roger Williams). World renowned conservationist David Bellamy visited the southern enclosure earlier this year and remarked that the rata grove was a magical site. He felt the fact that visitors would be able to get up amongst the forest canopy was a tremendous idea that would attract many tourists to the site, along with Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust project’s other attractions like native birds. Panels will inform visitors about the trees in the canopy. There are 98 steps to the top platform (which can accommodate about 20 people), but visitors not comfortable with the 16-metres can gain good views at earlier points.

Reward offered for caves tip-off The operators of Waitomo Caves are offering a $5000 reward for information on who was responsible for splashing white paint around the glow worm caves late last year, leaving the caves permanently damaged. Vandals broke into the caves complex on December 28 last year and splashed white paint around the glow worm cave, causing considerable damage to its natural features. When the offenders left, they tried to set fire to the paint and other chemicals left in the cave. The caves were closed for only one day, but the damage caused a significant disruption to business and a financial loss. Sergeant Craig Lindstrom of Te Kuiti police says despite a lengthy and extensive investigation into the vandalism, police are no closer to finding those responsible. The operators of the caves were now keen to offer a reward to prompt someone to come forward with information. “This was a significant incident that had a large impact not just on the business, but on the wider King Country community. The Waitomo Caves are iconic and part of our lives in this district and many people were upset at this blatant attempt to destroy something regarded as a local treasure. “We believe that someone out in

the community knows who is responsible for this - hopefully the offer of a reward will prompt someone to come forward with information that will be useful.” Mr Lindstrom said some of the paint was washed off the cave walls when the attack was first discovered, but much of it was splashed on to porous surfaces or in areas too delicate to use water or abrasive scrubbing. Staff have been working meticulously since the attack removing the paint inch by inch. The delicate glow-worms in the cave would be at risk if chemical agents were used. Mr Lindstrom said police had spoken to dozens of people since the vandalism and there had been good co-operation from the public. But there were no strong leads for police to follow and inquiries had been exhausted. “We know that many people in the community want to find the people responsible for this incident as much as we do. We would urge anyone with information about the vandalism to come forward.” Operators Tourism Holdings Ltd is offering the $5000 reward on the condition that information provided will lead to the arrest of an offender. Anyone with information should contact Mr Lindstrom at Te Kuiti police, phone 07 8781450.

Ecobulbs flowing off the shelves - now After a few teething problems - the Ecobulbs promotion has ‘seen the light’ in Te Awamutu. Vouchers have been steadily flowing in the door at both Shell service stations in Te Awamutu and consumers have been marching out the door with their Ecobulbs, ready to reduce power consumption without losing light. Jeanette Sicely, site manager at Shell Te Awamutu in Sloane Street said the current upgrading of their shop meant they had had to make temporary arrangements to cater for bulb buyers. A problem with receipting also caused a few hiccups early in the process at Shell Alexandra Street. The voucher can be traded at the heavily subsidised price of $10 for five Ecobulbs - which project sponsors Waipa Networks say can save up to $500 in electricity over the expected nine year ‘lifespan’ of the bulbs.

I remember in the early days of marriage when money was scarcer, the day came when our stove almost died. It was limping along on three elements, the oven light had blown, an element went a few weeks after that and the oven stopped a month later. We chugged along (as smaller families can) on three elements for a week, until I found a replacement. As a Kiwi with direct Dutch ancestry I am a ‘save a buck, do it your selfer’. I fix things if savable and bury the duds. So slide out the old, slip in the new, no problem. I wish all fix its were that simple. From personal experience and observation, I know muddlers aren’t always successful, and that their limited knowledge comes from projects that either stand as monuments to their failures or lie in council landfills. I learnt about the backs of stoves through trial, error, electric shocks and a thermostat I once wrecked that didn’t need replacing. In that case an electrician would have been a cheaper option. So these days I muddle less and employ the services of professionals more often. Murphy’s Law, ‘Anything you try to fix will cost more and take longer than you thought’. He is also reputed to have said, “If you fool around with something for long enough you will screw it up!” I’ve also learnt that there is a Kiwi No.8 wire muddler in us all e.g. relationships is a very common one, we fiddle, tamper and tinker until it’s no longer repairable, reconcilable, or retrievable, so like an old TV they are scrapped and we find a new one until we hit more bumps a bit further on. Yet there are professionals that can save lots of expense, pain, and wasted time … if only people would ask. I also wonder why churches are likened to a scrap metal dealer… you go there when something is broken down, or dead to dispose of. I wish people would come sooner regarding life and eternal issues, rather then after years of tinkering and muddling when things end up more complicated and emotionally costly. Most pastors are glad to assist people with life issues (usually for free too). As the Bible says: Don’t depend only on your own understanding, but acknowledge God, he can straighten out the paths of your life. Don’t be wise in your own eyes ... how lucky is the one who finds wisdom and gains understanding. Read Proverbs 2 and 3 some time.

Auckland Waikato Fish and Game predict good trout fishing this season in a number of the region’s streams, rivers and lakes. Fish and Game survey the main trout fishing waters each summer, either by drift diving or electric surveying, to assess trout numbers the following season. Wild trout are also tagged, with each fish measured, given a yellow tag by the dorsal fin, and then released. Streams expected to fish well this season include the Whakapapa (south of Taumaranui with access from Kakahi and Owhango), Mangatutu (south-west of Te Awamutu), Waimakariri and Waipare streams (south of Te Awamutu with access from the Tirau/Rotorua highway), and the Waihou (access from the Tirau/Putaruru highway). The Waikato region also has good trout fishing in a number of lakes, including hydro lakes such as Lake Arapuni and Karapiro Dam south of Hamilton. Fish and Game has access pamphlets to the trout fishing rivers, streams and lakes throughout the A u c k l a n d / Wa i k a t o region. These can be ordered by sending a list along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Fish and Game RD 9, Hamilton.

Entry forms are available from Te Awamutu College, Te Awamutu Intermediate School, Te Awamutu i-Site Visitor Information centre or by phoning 871 2797 in the evenings. Street naming back in limelight The process to name new streets in the region has been revamped, prompting Te Awamutu Community Board to revisit their list of approved names. The Community Board has for some time expressed concern at the lack of a clear policy on street naming, which they say has resulted in some names which are not in keeping with the nature of our community. Developers are now asked to consider road names from an approved list at the beginning of the process. The Board requested its list of already approved names be included in the agenda for the

October meeting for further discussion and additions. In general Te Awamutu street names are the surnames of prominent residents. Double ups with other settlements within Waipa District are not permitted. The list is intended to be a starting point for new names, with the provision to also make a case for a name that is not included. At their meeting last week the Board agreed to add some new names to the list, and would like the public to have their say by suggesting names and including their reasoning.

Suggestions can be emailed to Board chairman Dean Taylor ([email protected]) or addressed to the Te Awamutu Community Board, C/- Waipa District Council, Private Bag 2402, Te Awamutu. Existing and newly approved names on the list are: Baker, Bennett, Bevin, Bryant, Burchell, Burgess, Forbes, Gifford, Haworth, Irwin, Joe Oliver, Hammond, Hewitt, Hyams, Sterritt, Jourdain, Laird, Lotus, Marshall, Mason, Mathews, McCullough, Natzke, Nicholson, Page, Patterson, Rochfort, Russell, Sanders, Spooner, Wetere, Mona Wikaira and Collins Woolly.

Home and Garden Show packs them in The 22nd Waikato Home and Garden Show at Waikato Events Centre, Hamilton was a resounding success, attracting over 40,000 visitors from throughout the North Island. Event organiser, Graham Hannah said visitor numbers were not only up on last year, the biggest first day attendance ever was recorded. “The immediate feedback we’ve had from exhibitors has

been very positive indicating there are some substantial domestic projects happening in the Waikato area. There are reports of huge sales being achieved. Every year the Home Show gets better and we already have some great surprises planned for next year.” Mr Hannah also received wonderful visitor feedback on the positive and friendly

show culture and the variety and standard of exhibits. “We’ve had great comments from both locals and out-oftown visitors. One visitor from Wellington said he’d attended shows there but nothing compared with the Waikato Home and Garden Show.” Entries for the Interior Design Awards were judged by a team of industry professionals on the theme, My

Kihikihi Kindergarten The art of letter writing is alive and well at Kihikihi Kindergarten. A pile of envelopes left on a table led to a two month study including visits from NZ Post workers and a visit to the local Post Shop. Children enjoyed practising their literacy skills and ‘posting’ their efforts in a special red post box which was ‘cleared’ each day at mat time. They then became interested in learning their own addresses and decided to write letters to their parents. This culminated in a walk up to the Kihikihi Post Shop to post the letters. Visits from a sorter, two posties and a courier driver helped the children understand what happens after a letter is posted. The children were excited when the letters they had posted arrived at their homes and the excitement continued when reply letters addressed to individual children arrived at the kindergarten. Teachers say the study increased literacy and numeracy skills as well as the children’s wider understanding of the jobs done by people in the community. Head teacher Sue McCandlish says it was a good example of how

the teachers build on the children’s interests to create learning experiences which prepare them for school. Kihikihi Kindergarten offers six and four hour sessions. Teachers are all qualified and registered. The kindergarten is at 5 Linden St, Kihikihi. For enrolment information, phone administrator, Lesly, 871-4545.

Hi, Today at Hazelmere we found a new garden where our old garden used to be. Our old garden had some rocks, weeds and lots of snails. Mr Parkes from The Garden Shop and Mr Fleck from Ground FX worked to give us a path that goes crunch when you walk on it, a cool seat to go bird watching and lots of plants to watch them grow - then we can smell them, pick some and even eat some blueberries. I think there might be some worms and soon we might see butterflies! We have been playing rugby, soccer and netball at kindergarten . Before the holidays we had a disco, it was cool. I like helping my teachers work on their laptop computers, they help me write some stories. We like taking photos too. I have to go now as it is time to help my teachers find a recipe so we can make our own pizzas. Hazelmere is a cool place, would you like to come and see what we do? Your friend Dora.

photopronz/mike stinson

By Alan Messenger Hamilton cyclist Justin Kerr won the Te Awamutu Cycling Open on Saturday, repeating his win of last year. Kerr and Aucklander Aaron Strong left the main bunch on the penultimate lap of the tough, hilly Pokuru circuit. They joined a breakaway group of three riders, Jeff Burndred, Geoff Mackle and Brett Tivers at the start of the final lap. The gap between the leaders and the chasers see sawed between 18 and 30 seconds until the final 15km when the front group cleared further away. Burndred soon lost contact with the leading group and Strong was dropped 8km from the finish. At the race finish, a testing uphill sprint, Kerr bided his time to out sprint the two Taranaki riders Tivers and Mackle. Kerr has just returned from a stint riding in Belgium. He saw the race as a good buildup for the road nationals next week and the Tour of Southland in November. “It was very hard but it’s a fantastic race to have a week before the nationals” he said. Much of the local interest was in Peter Latham but the France based International was content to have a quiet ride in the bunch and withdrew at the start of the final lap. Former Te Awamutu rider Logan Hunn, recently returned from the USA, finished 10th, two places ahead of Shem Rodger. In the B grade, Manu Robson, Peter Rennie and Chris Gaze finished second, third and fourth. For Rennie the ride was a good one. He is still recovering from a recent knee operation. Rushlee Buchanan finished 22nd overall to claim the prize for first woman. Former Te Awamutu club rider David Priscott made a return to the sport to finish 23rd. He was a top junior on the track in the 1980s. Chris Russell won the junior under 17 race, with Emma Petersen the first girl. ROSETOWN students to win medals at the national Taekwon-Do championships, from left, front row: Ross Campbell (Waikeria Hawks instructor), Ross Gulliver, Daniel Campbell, Sam Ricketts, Clint King, Anna Hall; middle row: Jasmine King, Kera Adams, Chayse Gorton, Samantha Rush, 2900616AD Aaron Clode; back row: Ice Adams-Hunt, Hannah Rush, Lucy Rush, Kozmo Pool. By Colin Thorsen Six months of intensive training paid off for the 15 Waikeria Hawks and Te Awamutu Taekwon-Do students at the national championships in Wellington. The 10 Waikeria Hawks representatives were particularly dominant, winning four gold, six silver and six bronze medals. Te Awamutu’s five-strong team, instructed by fourth dan black belt Ian Campbell, returned home with one gold and four bronze.

It was a mighty show of strength by the Rosetown competitors. They were among 300 of the best students selected from throughout New Zealand to compete. Students competing in patterns competition had to go through a knockout process to make the final rounds. Sparring competitors had to work their way through the draw to make semi-finals and finals. From page 16. Up against an adult blue belt, Gorton showed style and composure for a unanimous win, with all three judges selecting him. Double gold medallist Hannah Rush had to go through the same gruelling process in the yellow belt section. Although unsuccessful, she did the Waipa Workingmen’s Club based Waikeria Hawks team proud coming runner-up best overall yellow belt in her first national tournament. The two local Taekwon-Do clubs worked together to achieve the best results for the students. The students would like to thank the following sponsors for their support and sponsorship, Fairview Motors, Wilksbrooke Motors, KFC, Go Buses, Doug White, ANZ Bank (Te Awamutu), Aotearoa Demolition.
