Lions’ largesse Mt Pirongia Lions handed over cheques for $200 to Te pahu rower Tyson Williams and $500 to Pirongia Netball Club at a dinner function on Tuesday night. Tyson is off to the World Junior Rowing Championships in Beijing, while Pirongia Netball Club has under 16 and under 19 teams attending the Southern Skies Tournament in Brisbane. This brought grants made by the club this Lions’ year to $3375 - Lions in turn are grateful to the community for support of fundraising events like their annual garage sale, Boxing Day Races and Pirongia Craft Day. Kawhia concern Concerns by some Kawhia residents over proposed temporary closure of a section of Te Puia Road could be answered at a meeting at 4pm at Kawhia Community Hall this Sunday. Owners of Tainui Kawhia Forest, have proposed closure of the section of the road between headquarters and the car park at Ocean Beach overnight as a fire safety measure.

By Grant Johnston Clint King believes the New Zealand Taekwon-Do team he is a part of can claim gold at the World Championships in Canada this month. The 30-year-old Waikeria Prison officer is a stalwart member of Waikeria Hawks Taekwon-Do Club. He has been training hard with the 16-strong New Zealand team in Taupo and Auckland and has seen enough to convince him they are serious prospects for gold. The second dan attended the last World Championships in Germany two years ago, where his New Zealand team was fourth overall and picked up gold in teams speciality technique and bronze in team power. He expresses appreciation to Waipa Workingmen’s Club (venue for Waikeria Hawks’ training) which has donated $1000 towards the $5,500 cost of his trip and to his family for their support. Fundraising is ongoing - donations can be at Waipa Workingmen’s Club. The King family is not to be messed with - Clint’s dad, Robert (who also works at Waikeria) studied taekwon-do, mum Gloria and brother Ashley have black belts and sister Jasmine a black stripe.

Road safety lesson for students By Colin Thorsen Te Awamutu College students heading to school on Tuesday morning witnessed the carnage that can be caused by driver inattention. At 8.20am, as a large number of students were making their way to school, two cars collided on Alexandra Street when the adult female driver of a Nissan Primera did a U turn into the path of another Nissan Primera, also being driven by an adult female. Although no-one was seriously injured, one driver was taken away in an ambulance and treated for shock. Te Awamutu Police, Te Awamutu St John Ambulance and Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade attended the accident.

I was most interested to read the recent Courier article which featured a photo of Hazel Barnes with Jan Missen and Sue Jones. I started my nursing training at Waikato Hospital on May 20, 1957. That day 24 of us started, three of whom live in Te Awamutu now; Doreen Haswell and Elizabeth Ormsby being the other two. We are having a get-together next weekend. In the past 50 years we have met only twice so are all excited about meeting up again. Most live in New Zealand, but one is coming from Australia. Our experiences were

We also were moved to the ‘new curriculum’ which saw us having to do our maternity nursing training as well as the basic general training. I was sent to the Te Awamutu Maternity Hospital in Rutherford Street for my junior six weeks’ experience. The friendships made during the time of our training are very special. Hazel Barnes is that it mentioned Wilma Fletcher as well as Sue Jones in the photo. During the 1960s the three of us were nannies (or instutrices) to an English family in Peru. Sue was there in 196162, Wilma in 1963-64 and I was the last in 1965-66. The father worked for an English import/export firm and had home leave every two years, which is why our terms were for two years. Sue’s sister had met the mother in New Zealand, so although she didn’t know us, we were recommended by each other. MERLE OLIVER

‘Crossed line’ and lived to tell tale I would like to thank everyone involved with the organising and the smooth execution of the Miss Pirongia 2007 beauty pageant. As a contestant, I was among men whom took the challenge to its limit and the ridicule that went with it and was proud to be involved in such a fantastic event. It was a great night for a great cause and was supported by giving community and I wish the Pirongia U16 and U19 netball teams every success in Brisbane. Service to local The 80’s are back brigade honoured

In 1982 Rob Peters agreed to join the local fire brigade and give-ita-go for a year. Recently he was presented with his Gold Star for 25 years service, all for Te Awamutu, by his first fire chief Don Hallett. In a proud tradition of longstanding service, Mr Peters became Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade’s 32nd Gold Star member, and received medal number 6188 for New Zealand. The presentation evening was attended by 130 colleagues, family members, friends and fire service dignitaries to celebrate life honoury membership for his distinguished service. Mr Peters was working in the Te Awamutu Dairy Factory butter plant back in 1982, and was fire chief for the site. His mate, and firefighter, Colin Linton suggested he also join the local brigade. Mr Peters said he would give it a year and see how it went. He never left. Mr Peters says in his time he has worked with three very good chiefs, Mr Hallett, Robbie Morriss and Murray Gane, and doesn’t regret for one minute joining. He spent his first nine years as an active firefighter, then after a back injury, continued as a Fire Policeman. He says the training and skills are the same, but he cannot do as much for risk on injury, or possibly more importantly, letting the team down. Mr Peters says it is the team-work that is so rewarding about the service and he recommends anyone who is fit and able to volunteer joins up. After resigning from the factory, Mr Peters had his own business for a year, and found he wasn’t quite able to be as available, but subsequently his employers - Waipa District Council and now Courier

Sharpening - have been excellent supporters. His best years were as part of Te Awamutu’s successful competition team - six years competing and attending three national events. He says the contests were great sport, he met and made good friends around the country, saw a bit of New Zealand, it kept

But he says the day-to-day life of a volunteer is also rewarding, knowing you are helping your community and being part of a great group of people. Above all else, he says it has taught him to respect life.

Concert to raise cash for Freeman Court Monthly Gardening and Landscaping Guide

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR Days are short, nights are long and cold and our fruit trees and roses are due for that major prune again. Some of our back yards can't be seen for a thick carpet of leaves. This is the ideal time of year to think about creating a healthy garden rather that another mountain of rubbish - to be carted away to our already bulging landfill. It's not that hard. Use a garden chipper and chip up all those fruit tree prunings and place them around the plants in your garden. Lawns and paths can be kept clear of leaves, twigs and all kinds of debris using blowers and vacuum cleaners, available in hand-held and backpack versions. From appliances currently available on the market, users can find the technological solution best able to meet their particular operating requirements. These are specific purpose machines, easy to handle, that will get the job done simply, swiftly and quietly. Cer-

tain models of blower, generally with an internal combustion engine, can be converted easily to operate as vacuum cleaners by fitting a special collection kit, with a blade by which vacuumed material is chopped up to reduce the volume when inside the bag. They can also be equipped with anti-vibration systems that isolate the engine from the handgrips and the body of the machine, significantly reducing the level of vibration transmitted to the operator when in use. Once collected mix some straw, grass and a little bit of lime with them and you've just created a bountiful feast for the worms. Don't forget to turn it over to aerate it from time to time and you will have fantastic compost ready for your spring planting, to really get those plants going. HAMILTON Community Gospel Choir which is performing this weekend to raise funds for the Freeman Court Upgrade Project. Photo supplied. Two renowned choirs are performing in Te Awamutu this weekend in a concert to raise funds for the $600,000 Freeman Court upgrade. Organised by the Lions Club of Te Awamutu, the fundraising concert features the Mighty River Harmony Chorus and Hamilton Community Gospel Choir. The Hamilton Community Gospel Choir is an interdenominational / multicultural community-based choir dedicated to presenting the music of God to the people. Currently there are over sixty members whose ages range from

16 to 60. The Choir is conducted by Selepa Vailisale who this year graduated with her Bachelor of Christian Contemporary Music. She is a part time tutor at Vision College Music School and as well provides private piano and vocal tuition. The in demand Hamilton Community Gospel Choir ‘Voices of Gospel’ Choir performed at the Jazz Festival at Holy Trinity Church, Tauranga in April of this year and will also perform at the Founders Theatre Sunday Showcase on May 27 along with nine other choirs.

The show is in the Te Awamutu Bible Chapel on Saturday night from 7.30pm and entry is just $15.

Earthquake rocks city of ‘Stanville’ No Interest until 2009*

STANVILLE Police try to identify the earthquake. By Cathy Asplin An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale caused chaos for the residents of Stanville when it hit at 11am last Friday. Civil Defence and emergency services quickly swung into action, but the death toll had risen to nine within the first hour. Many more were injured and several unaccounted for. Buildings such as Pak ‘n’ Save, Rebel Sport, The Warehouse and a nearby factory sustained the worst damage during the quake and many of the businesses were raided by looters. Fortunately Stanville is a fictional city and the chaos was all part of a disaster scenario for Te Pahu School. The exercise saw some students taking on the roles of services such

The emergency scenario was all part of a school unit focusing on disasters which utilised the Civil Defence emergency planning kit, ‘What’s the Plan Stan?’ It provided the students with a first hand view of how a disaster situation is dealt with.

Te Awamutu Machine Knitters are a passionate lot keen to share their hobby and knowledge with new members. While the craft is generally waning in popularity, the Te Awamutu group continues to be strong and active - but would like some young blood in the ranks. Te Awamutu’s club is the largest in the Waikato, and members want to keep it that way. They meet on the fourth Wednesday of every month in the Presbyterian Church Lounge from 12.30pm, but have plenty of other group activities to keep themselves occupied. President Shirley Walker says members often get together to help and encourage each other with projects, plus keen members meet regularly on the Wednesday

before the scheduled meeting for a crafting session. She says many people in the community probably have a knitting machine tucked away somewhere in their home - and she encourages those people to get them out and give it another go. The advantages of being part of the club is that there are plenty of patterns available for knitters of all skill levels, and plenty of experience and knowledge to be shared. Many experienced knitters create their own designs from scratch, but knitters of all abilities are able to make quality, individual garments for the whole family at an affordable cost. Keen knitters look forward to the annual festival of Machine Knitting, being held this year in

Palmerston North. This showcases the best of the best within the organisations, and is a chance to the top designers and knitters to show off their flair and skill competing in the Make and Model and Supreme Fashion Award sections. Xcluder fence Mice mightiest pests on Maunga comes to town Pest efforts driving down numbers of destructive mammals - mice hard to beat

A demonstration section of the pest proof fence that surrounds Maungatautari as part of the restoration project is now on show at the Te Awamutu i-SITE Visitor Information Centre. Information Centre staff organised the display following continued interest from visitors and the local community. “Not a day goes by without us being asked about the Maungatautari project, its walks and the fence which surrounds it”, says manager Roz Liddell. “It is great to be able to show those who can’t get up to the mountain or those eager to visit, what is protecting it.” Mrs Liddell says anyone is welcome to come to the centre to get a close look at the Xcluder and how it works to keep the mountain pest-free. Roger MacGibbon, managing director for Xcluder Pest Proof Fencing Company, said that he was impressed by the centre’s initiative and happy to help by providing materials for the display.

Mice appear to be the only survivors in any numbers after intensive pest-destruction efforts over the 3400-hectare Maungatautari ecological island reserve, Jim Mylchreest, CEO for the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust, says there is currently no evidence of pigs, cats, mustelids, possums, hedgehogs and rats surviving on the mountain. Very few rabbits, hares, goats or deer are believed to be still on the mountain, and intensive hunting operations are under way to try to eradicate the last of them. “But the mice are a continuing problem,” says Mr Mylchreest. “We found small numbers of them in three locations in January, and since then we’ve found others in various locations across the mountain. “We’ve caught 23 since February, but we continue to find their tracks in a number of our tracking stations.” He says mice have always been seen as one of the major difficulties to clear from such a large area, and international scientists and conservationists are watching the programme with interest. “I don’t think mouse eradication on this scale has been contemplated anywhere in the world before, so there’s a lot of scientific interest in how we’re going about it and how successful we will be.” Once other predators have been removed from a location, mouse populations are likely to explode, and the tiny rodents can do major damage to forest reproduction, eating huge amounts of seeds, flowers and tiny seedlings, as well as large numbers of native insects. Mr Mylchreest says it is now almost certain that a third poison-bait drop will be carried out over the ecological island bush in a further attempt to get rid of the mice, and any other isolated pests which may have escaped detection. “We’re looking at a number of options, such as reducing the size of the baits so

If the baits are small enough for the mice to pick up and take away to their burrows, they may be inclined to eat more of them.” He says a third bait drop had always been programmed, and the trust already has a resource consent to carry it out. It is likely to do so during the first fine weather pattern after the beginning of June.

The cost will be about $300,000. “Mice were always going to be a challenge here,” Mr Mylchreest says. “We’ve been working hard on them, but now that virtually all the other predators have been removed from the mountain and there’s no competition for food, the mice can easily triple their numbers every three weeks because of their rapid rate of breeding.”

Two fatal accidents have occured this year, when homeowners have been installing aluminium underfloor thermal insulation. In both cases, when the homeowners have stapled the insulation material, they have hit live power cables. The Energy Safety Service has provided information for consumers at the point of sale in the hope that further injury or death can be avoided. “As with any work being carried out, whether in the home or in the workplace, it is essential that any hazards or risks are identified and eliminated. Homeowners or DIY consumers without formal training or access to industry codes of practice or safety knowledge need to be helped to identify potential risks. “Turning off the power while installing the insulation is recommended, however, this does not necessarily eliminate the hazard. “A cable that has been damaged by a staple could still liven the aluminium foil when the power is turned back on and create the same electric shock hazard. “There is also a risk of an electrically initiated fire resulting from such a damaged cable. “If there is any doubt on the ability of the consumer to safely install underfloor thermal insulation, then the work should be left to professional installers.”

Reticulated natural gas is cheaper than electricity for standalone heaters. The running costs for a flued gas heater and central heating range between 7 and 17 cents per kWh _ slightly more expensive than an electric heat pump. LPG heating appliances (ranging from 15 to 22 cents per kWh) are generally slightly cheaper to run than electric appliances. Both LPG and natural gas have a couple of disadvantages that hike their real cost. LPG is supplied in cylinders, which need to be hired. And there’s a connection fee for reticulated natural gas. Top heating tips from Consumer

Every home has electricity, and portable heaters are cheap to buy - although their running costs are quite high at around 20 cents per kWh. But they’re good for that extra temperature boost in specific areas, like bedrooms and work areas. For modern well-insulated homes we recommend panel and oil-column heaters. For older poorly insulated houses with high ceilings, radiant heaters are likely to be more effective _ but not in bedrooms or around young children. Spending money on more expensive, permanently installed equipment such as night-store heaters (where a night-store tariff is available) or underfloor heating halves the running costs you’d pay for portable heaters. Heat pumps are the cheapest to run of all the electric options: they can be retro-fitted into an existing house. Wood

If you have a supply of free or cheap firewood, then there’s no cheaper heating option than a modern woodburner. But if you buy firewood, then a pellet burner is worth considering. Its running costs can be slightly more than a wood burner’s, but without the hassle of large amounts of firewood _ and it has the advantages of thermostatic and timer control.

Diesel

Burning diesel in a central-heating plant or in a woodfire-style burner is quite cost effective.

It’s about the same price for central heating as wood pellets. But you’re at the mercy of fluctuating international oil prices. The diesel is stored in a steel tank, which means you have a store of fuel for emergencies.

Ireland says he thought long and hard before resigning in order to concentrate more on his role as club CEO. He is also a Waikato Bay of Plenty (Wai-Bay) Federation board member. Two missed one-one-one chances with the Claudelands Rovers goalie prevented Te Awamutu recording their first win in the Wai-Bay Federation league on Saturday. The visitors played well enough in their first game under coach Ball to have secured maximum points instead of a 2-2 draw at Galloway Park, Hamilton. Ken Miezenbeek reports they clearly had the better of the game in the second half and should have been rewarded a couple of times when substitute Jordan Ball and James Mead were presented match-winning opportunities. The visitors found themselves

The third team drew 1-all with Claudelands Rovers, with Dave Ireland the goal scorer.

Rookie goalie player of day An injury hit Te Awamutu women’s soccer team can hold their heads high after extending Waikato division one league leaders Melville to 3-1. Te Awamutu’s ability to be competitive on the day was helped considerably by four Reserve team players being able to fill their depleted ranks, due to a bye for the Reserves. Melville, with a well organised attack and sustained controlled passing, dominated the first half to lead 2-0. Credit must go to Te Awamutu’s defence, capably marshalled by Kathryn Powell, and Alison Surtees in goal for snuffing out several other threatening at-

tacks. Te Awamutu worked their way into the game in the second half. A through ball from Charlotte Meyers found Natalie Cocker who made no mistake finding the back of the net. The fitter Te Awamutu halves were gaining ascendancy and the underdogs very nearly scored again when Brogan Mathieson hit the wood work. But there was to be no fairy tale ending. Melville secured the matchwinner from a deflection off a Te Awamutu defender. Player of the day went to Alison Surtees, whose family are now settled in the Pirongia vil-

lage after emigrating from Yorkshire in September last year. It was the ‘soccer mad’ adopted Kiwi’s first ever full game as goalie after coming through a half game ‘trial’ with flying colours. Alison religiously follows Middlesbrough in the premier league back home. It is the first season she has played for several years and she is loving the environment created by Te Awamutu women’s coach Graham Smith. Next week Te Awamutu are away to North Hamilton when the result could again be dependant on player numbers.

By Colin Thorsen Mark Murray is thirsting for another piece of the action after making his debut for Te Awamutu Sports in the Waikato premier rugby competition on Saturday. The strongly built under-21 centre grabbed his opportunity with both hands after answering an SOS call from Senior A coach Kerry Eynon to play second five in the ‘must win’ game against Te Rapa. Te Awamutu Sports had nearly half their squad side lined with injury, including regular second five Hayden Wolfsbauer. Undaunted by the challenge, Murray excelled from the first play when he took the ball up strongly, bouncing a couple of Te Rapa players off. He continued to threaten with ball in hand throughout the game, always managing to get over the advantage line with his admirable upper-body strength, and his defence was rock solid. The Senior A rookie’s confidence grew throughout the game, as did his work rate around the field, culminating in a try by the posts. He hit a short ball from first five Waylon Tangohau and beat the fullback with a huge ‘don’t argue’ fend. Eynon said he had selected Murray only on what he had seen of him playing for the Te Awamutu Sports championship winning under-19 team last year and recommendations from his coaches - but he liked what he saw. “For someone just pulled into

boosts WTA ranking Te Awamutu’s Leanne Baker and Australian doubles partner Nicole Kriz were pipped 12-10 in a third set tie break in the semi-final of the $US145,000 ($NZ200,276) Prague WTA event. The Australasian pairing had lost the first set 7-6 in a tie break against China’s Ji Chumei and Sun Shengnan, then won the second set 6-4. The points Baker will receive from making the semi-finals will lift her current doubles ranking of 122 up to at least 110. It was rewarding for the New Zealand Federation Cup team member to show her true form in this tournament after being surprisingly off her game when home in January for the ASB Classic. Her goal this year is firmly establish herself in the top 100 women’s doubles players on the world circuit. Noel Evans clinched the Bertram Cup with a second round 67 net at Te Awamutu Golf Club on Saturday. Evans stormed home to beat the runner-up Barry Murtagh by one shot (137 to 138) in the two rounds net competition. The Furborough Putting Trophy, decided over the first two rounds of the club strokeplay championships, was won decisively by Peter Morgan. He required only 51 putts over the 36 holes, easily heading off the runner-up Robert Wetere on 58. The top three divisions of the strokeplay championship are wide open after two rounds. Bryce McDougall leads the

senior strokeplay with 153, from Rhys O’Connor 155 and young Compton Pikari 156. The intermediate championship is headed by Robert Wetere with 164, from Peter Morgan 167 and Bruce Webster 168. Tim Young leads the junior section with 173, from Noel Evans 175 and Shane Thompson 180. Bertram Cup runner-up Barry Murtagh, 198, has a stranglehold on the junior B title. He has a 10 shot cushion over second placed Jerry Maynard, 208, with Scott Elliot a further two shots adrift. Acme Cup leaders (on net) are Pikari (senior) 140, Wetere (intermediate) 140, Evans (jun-
