azda has developed a naturally aspirated 1.3litre ‘Miller-cycle’ engine for its new-generation Mazda2 due for release later this year. The Miller-cycle in the Mazda2 combines with the Japanese brand’s first continuously variable transmission and is claimed to enable fuel economy of less than 5l/100km. Part of the MZR engine family, the new DOHC aluminium 1.3 features sequential valve timing and meets Japan’s Super Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle (SU-LEV) standard.

Mazda is also picking up on the booming diesel car trend, developing a 2.0 litre common-rail turbo-diesel version of the Mazda3 in either a fourdoor sedan or five-door hatchback. First seen at the Geneva motor show in March, the Mazda3 Diesel is expected on the Australian market later this year. Mazda Australia anticipates selling only about 100 units a month, which is a similar volume to its larger sibling, the Mazda6 Diesel that was introduced there in October last year. Powered by the same Euro IV emissions-compliant 2.0-litre MZRCD engine used in the diesel 6, the Mazda3 Diesel offers an identical 105kW of power at 3500rpm and 360Nm of torque at 2000rpm. This is about the same power as the 2.0-litre Mazda3 petrol engine, but double the torque. In terms of fuel economy, it returns 6.0l/100km on the combined cycle, compared with 8.6l/100km for the petrol engine.

POPULAR IN EUROPE European car makers have been offering diesel options for many years. Generally the fuel has been better priced and the economy of the vehicle makes it a smart choice. The New Zealand market, governed to some degree by our small size and needs and wants of near-neighbour Australia - which actually has a car manufacturing industry, has been a bit slower on the uptake. Aussie and Japanese cars, which form the basis of our new car industry, have been slower on the diesel uptake. Commercials and second-hand imported Japanese cars have probably made up the largest sector of New Zealand’s small vehicle diesel fleet. The advent of common rail turbodiesels has turned the diesel market on its head worldwide. With huge bottom-end performance, low fuel consumption and greatly reduced emissions thanks to particulate filters and electronic controls, the old reputation of dirty and rattly ‘oilers’ has almost gone. Japanese car-makers have been slower adopters of the technology than the Europeans, but are increasingly turning their attentions to the European market and are therefore expected to introduce more turbodiesels in the future. NEW FALCON? Ford Australia has registered the name Falcon R6. Trademark protection for the title is the latest indication Ford plans to

introduce new model variants in its next-generation Falcon range - codenamed Orion - due for release around April next year. (DriveBy isn’t sure why Ford Australia would want to name the project after the rather ugly British Ford Orion - pictured)! The company also registered the names Falcon G6 and Falcon G6E in March. There is no guarantee the names will be used, as companies sometimes trademark titles that never make it to market, but the new models do fit in with Ford Australia’s plans to expand the Falcon range. LANCER LAUNCH Mitsubishi’s all important new Lancer will be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show this September and then come down-under for the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney in the second week of October. Highlighting the point made about economy and diesel technology, the European Lancer will look the same as the Australasian version, but the cars are very different when it comes to what lies in the engine bay.

European Lancer models will be available with three different engines at launch, an 81kW 1.5-litre fourcylinder petrol, a 103kW 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol and a VW sourced 106kW 2.0-litre diesel engine. Local versions of the Lancer will be powered by a 2.0-litre MIVEC fourcylinder engine. The company say the new engine will offer comparable performance to the existing 115kW 2.4-litre MIVEC, but it is expected to offer better fuel economy figures. 193DB007-07

Workhorse Land Cruiser gets an awesome V8 I By Dean Taylor first drove a 70 series Toyota Land Cruiser back in the 1970’s when as a student I worked for a local beekeeper. We used to load up a huge dual wheel trailer with hives full of honey and haul it all over the countryside with an ugly yellow 4.2 litre, straight six Land Cruiser. It just kept going. So popular are these workhorses, that Waikato Toyota can’t keep one in their yard long enough for me to test drive. To get behind the wheel of the new V8, I had to call on a favour from one of the local Toyota agency’s clients, John McLaughlin of Pool Builders, who took delivery of the LX Wagon. When Mr McLaughlin was looking for a new vehicle for the work fleet the first consideration was power. Secondly it had to be able to go anywhere and lastly he wanted something versatile that he could haul parts, or maybe take the kids to school. The four door is big - big up front for blokes, big in the back for more blokes or family, and big in the boot to cart stuff around. And with the new turbocharged, 4.5litre DOHC common rail diesel V8 its big on power and torque.

The V8 makes 151kW of power (up from 122 with the old six) and 430nM of torque (up from 380). Most importantly the torque comes in from just 1200rpm - it just pulls. It also meets tougher new emission standards. The V8 is matched to a five speed manual gearbox with high and low ratios.

Mr McLaughlin uses it to tow an 11.5 metre long trailer loaded with swimming pools. It’s awkward, it’s heavy and there is a lot of wind resistance - but the Land Cruiser does the job without any fuss.

He’s had a bit of ribbing about needing a snorkel - especially as he is in the pool building business - but it isn’t an optional extra, it’s standard - an indication of the purposefulness of the 70 series. Driving the new 70 series wasn’t that removed from how I remember them from the 70s. The engine has plenty of pull, and without any weight on board, first gear isn’t needed. Handling is OK, but being a real off roader you need to keep your wits about you on the road - it isn’t a car. The Land Cruiser now has a stereo (I mean since the 70s), basic air conditioning and electric windows. Interior isn’t that different - to quote New Zealand Driver in fact about this whole vehicle - ‘It’s so retro it’s fashionable’. But in a vehicle designed for hard work it’s a simple layout that works. Toyota sell the 70 series in cab/chassis, hardtop and wagon variants - all use the same engine/transmission combination. The smaller Prado variants come with either a 3.0 litre common rail, DOHC turbocharged diesel straight four or 4 litre, quad cam petrol V6. Most common transmission is a five speed automatic, although there is a six speed manual option for the diesel version only. The Land Cruiser Wagon is still using a straight six, 4.2 litre, DOHC, turbocharged diesel with five speed automatic. In this vehicle the six makes 150kW and 430Nm of torque, comparable with the new V8.

Fifty year heritage oyota’s Land Cruiser is in fact a vehicle with a heritage stretching back more than 50 years. The first was built in 1951, a model BJ built on a one-ton truck chassis, which looked just like a Jeep and was powered by a 3.6litre straight six. The name Land Cruiser was inspired by Land Rover. In 1955 the 20 series was developed with an eye on the market outside Japan. A longer wheel-base 30 series was also developed - which has been developed into today’s 100 series Land Cruiser Wagon, the larger of the three variants which have the Land Cruiser name. It was the introduction of the 40 series in 1960 that sold Land Cruiser to the world. This has continued to be developed until in 1984 the 70 series was launched. In many respects today’s 70 series reviewed here hasn’t changed a lot in terms of looks and purpose. This is the vehicle designed to take whatever New Zealand’s farmer, tradesman or off road enthusiast can throw at it. Smallest in today’s line-up is the Land Cruiser Prado, a largely urban vehicle, but still with legendary Land Cruiser 4WD heritage.

Kihikihi ot on the heels of the hugely successful PPG/ Classic Cover Street Rod Nationals held in Te Awamutu over Easter came another chance for hot rod fans to see the best of the best. The Boyd Coddington Wheels National Hot Rod Show took place over Queens Birthday weekend in the Telstra Clear Pacific Events centre in Manukau. More than 100 of the country’s top hot rods and street machines were lined up for inspection by many adoring fans, but also by judges intent on finding what made some machines stand out as the best. Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club was represented by Glen MacKenzie and his 1948 Chevy truck which had been a Top 10 Hot Rod at the Te Awamutu event (pictured). At Pukekohe the blue machine picked up Top Pre-49 Modified

H

Pickup, second in Custom Paint and Best Entry on Cragar Wheels. Te Awamutu also had a link with two Matamata Rod and Custom Club members, but who are friends and supporters of the Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club. On show were RJ Hampton’s AC Cobra and Bill Fryers 1923 T Bucket, both of which had extensive paint and panel work completed at Kihikihi Auto Body Repairs before the show, and both of which won prizes in their respective classes (see page 6). The show highlighted the 45th Anniversary of the New Zealand Hot Rod Association and most classes featured a number of new cars never seen before and had the added attraction of a section featuring builds in progress, plus a nostalgia style car display featuring Kiwi hot rodding and drag racing icons of yesteryear. Trade displays also featured for

those looking for the latest trends in the sport of hot rodding. Auckland based Custom Rods was one of a number of businesses which also featured an impressive display of their own, in this case their specialist turn-key 1937 hot rods (www.custom-rods.com). This show once again highlighted the quality of cars being built in New Zealand and was a credit to John Della-Mura and his wife Robyn who were the promoters behind the event along with the NZHRA show committee. Anyone wishing to know more about the sport of hot rodding should check the latest issues of Petrolhead and New Zealand Rodder magazines, check the NZHRA website or locally contact Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club member Kevin Graham (07 847 1020 or 07 856 9500 a/h) for more information.

So yeah we’re Kiwis and we’re pretty clever and think of great stuff - like selling tractors made by supercar manufacturers, or little trucks that go anywhere and don’t actually need a driver. And yeah we invented this idea where you get an old tractor and stick a big motor in it - like a V8 - and then race on the dirt against other ones and call them super-modified ‘cause noone else in the world would think of that.

SHOW ‘N’ SHINE: Matamata machines belonging to Bill Fryer (1923 T Bucket) and RJ Hampton (AC Cobra) weren’t in this winning condition when they came to Kihikihi Auto Body Repairs prior to the National Show.

Epica fills gap for Holden W By Dean Taylor hen Holden discontinued the Vectra about a year ago it left the carmaker with a void in the all-important mid-sized range. Now it is banking on a Korean built replacement that looks like it can do the job. The Holden Epica is a new design, based on an existing GM platform, built at Holden’s own factory in Korea. I took the top-of-therange CDXi from Rosetown Holden for a test and was impressed with the smart look, especially in black, design features and throughtfullness that had gone into the car. For a start the designers have clearly incorporated the Holden heritage with styling cues to the Commodore. That’s a pretty sensible move as the Commodore is a huge success story for GM downunder. An while the Epica is in the mid-size category, its a pretty sizeable and roomy car. It uses front wheel drive technology - that’s to be expected, but the engine isn’t. The 2.5 litre straight six

and five speed automatic is a bit different in a category dominated by in-line fours or V6s. A straight six is a smooth engine, but not usually mounted across the car. But this works fine - its smooth, its quiet, it won’t set the world on fire, but it revs willingly and produces its power across the range without too much fuss. Its 115kW of power and 237Nm of torque is modest, but it seems enough. And for most buyers the smoothness and attraction of a small six in such a well appointed car will win through. Holden developers are

also banking on the engine’s reliability and innovations. It uses a timing chain that doesn’t need replacing and Iridium plugs that go for 150,000km. Price and appointment are obviously strong selling points. Designers have certainly had a good time with the Epica and it has a lot going for it. The car is good looking in a sort of understated manner. It sits on a nice set of 17” alloys and features just enough chrome to give it a distinctive look. Inside I had full leather,

power everything, six disc, MP3 compatible sound system with eight speakers and more airbags than I had ever seen before. Other safety features are built into the handling and braking packages - stuff you don’t know about until it works and saves you from disaster. The styling of the interior was impressive - a blend of materials creating a classy look and feel. Especially nice is the leather steering wheel and gear shifter. There were ample storage compartments, a place for a phone and its charger to be plugged in, steering wheel mounted cruise control and audio system controls and an excellent instrument cluster and driver information screen. And it had size - room to be comfortable, room for people in the back and room in the boot for plenty of luggage or shopping.

A Quiet Revolution has begun. • WHISPER QUIET • 6 CYLINDER POWER Redefining motoring refinement. Challenging preconceptions. Setting bold new benchmarks in affordability and value for money. Astonishingly noise and vibration free. Incredibly fuel efficient. Epica’s transverse mounted, in-line six cylinder engine is one of the quietest, smoothest and most economical six cylinder engines ever to power a Holden.

YEAH, well we’re from the good ole US of A and no-one does it better, bigger or brighter than us - so some of our small tractors have big block V8s, but the rest have really, really big engines and we race them and call it the world championships.

New course for drivers

The AA has launched a new defensive driving course for experienced drivers. “The fact is older, more experienced drivers crash too”, says Karen Dickson, AA’s Driver Training Manager. “Someone who has been driving for 10, 20 or even 30 years may consider themselves to be a good driver - but when did they last look at a Road Code or update their driving knowledge and skills.” In the past year drivers aged 40 and above represented 40% of all road fatalities. That figure increases to 60% if you include those aged between 25 and 39 years of age. “The AA’s new defensive driving course for experienced drivers is all about improving awareness, knowledge and safety. It is based on risk management and reduction, and searching and scanning techniques are taught to enhance the identification and response to hazards. The course also teaches environmentally friendly driving, including choosing a vehicle fit for purpose and how to drive in a fuel efficient manner,” she says. For further information on the AA’s new defensive driving course for experienced drivers, phone 0800 223 748 or email [email protected]

uzuki’s classic Bandit has just got a whole lot better with the release of the 2007 models. The new Bandit 1250 and 1250S - available from Wilksbrooke Motors, - feature more power, more technology and legendary styling in a complete package of power, balance and quality. The 1250 is a traditional round headlight design with bullet shaped instrument bodies and handlebar mounted mirrors. The ‘S’ features a sleek half-faring with built in headlight, windscreen and faring mounted mirrors. The engine has been designed especially for the Bandit and has been increased from the previous 1157cc to 1255cc.

The main improvement is more torque from idle to redline - giving better throttle response and more effortless acceleration. The liquid cooled, four cylinder, DOHC engine also features advanced direct fuel injection and four valves per cylinder. Extra protection is provided by a liquid-cooled oil cooler. The symmetrical design, with centralised cam chain, allows exhaust headers to flow around each side of the frame. It is matched to a six speed gearbox. Improved emission systems means the bandit meets tough Euro 3 and Tier 2 emissions standards. A team dedicated to the Bandit included a host of other improvements

to the engine to give it even better performance and reliability, while being more compact it gives the rider more room. A redesigned chassis gives the Bandit more strength and better sporting comfort. Larger downtubes increase rigidity by 10%, while proven rake and trail designs gives excellent handling, plus comfort at highway cruising speeds. The rider can be adjusted up or down by 20mm and front and rear suspension components have preload adjustability to accommodate riding solo or with a passenger. Brakes are 310mm dual front discs with 4-piston callipers and single piston, 240mm rear disc. ABS is optional. 193DB001-07

s well as a number of strong, well supported Te Awamutu based clubs, local enthusiasts have plenty of regional clubs to suit the various marques represented by collectors. One such example is the Waikato Sunbeam Owners Club which has a handful of Te Awamutu members amongst its ranks. The club’s 37 members meet monthly for a ‘nog and natter’ at the Okoroire Pub. Local couple Merv and Kaye Thorburn organised a recent Sunday club run for the group, taking members to the fantastic car collection of Chris Empson and machinery collection of Colin Pinkerton. Between visits to these immaculate sheds, members enjoyed lunch at the Thorburn’s farm home. Mr Thorburn says members were astounded at the quality of machinery in the two local sheds and at how Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club well organised they were.
