FORTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL CONVOCATION FOR THE CONFERRING OF DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS
Arthur V. Mauro CHANCELLOR On January 1, 2010, Mr. Arthur V. Mauro, prominent Canadian businessman and philanthropist, began his term as Lakehead University’s seventh Chancellor. Mr. Mauro says that he has a tremendous sense of gratitude to have been asked to take on this role in the city where he was born and raised. “It is one of my regrets that Lakehead University did not exist when I finished secondary school. I would have attended.” Arthur Mauro was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He went to Winnipeg in 1946 to study at St. Paul’s College, a Catholic College in the Jesuit tradition. He then studied law at the University of Manitoba and was called to the Bar of Manitoba in 1953. Until 1969 he practiced law, specializing in transportation and communication law. Mr. Mauro has had an impressive business career. In 1967, he was appointed Chairman of the Royal Commission on Northern Transportation, and in 1969 became a senior executive with Great Northern Capital Corporation. From 1972 to 1976, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Transair Limited, and joined the Investors Group in 1976 to become its President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman. In 1987, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada and was later promoted to Officer in 1992. He received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in 1987 and an Honorary Doctor of Commerce from Lakehead University in 1997. In 2004, he was awarded the Order of Manitoba for his contributions to the economic, civic and cultural life of Manitoba. At present, Mr. Mauro is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc. Since his student days, Arthur Mauro has actively supported the University of Manitoba, as a lecturer and then as Chancellor from 1991 to 2000. In September 2001, he made a major contribution to St. Paul’s College at the University of Manitoba to establish the Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice, dedicated to the advancement of human rights, conflict resolution, global citizenship, peace, and social justice through research, education, and outreach. Although Mr. Mauro has long since left the Lakehead, he has never forgotten his roots. He has fond memories of growing up on Secord Street in Port Arthur, being a student at Port Arthur Collegiate Institute, and graduating from St. Patrick’s High School. His commitment to Thunder Bay and to Lakehead University was demonstrated in 2005, when he matched donations made to the Advanced Technology & Academic Centre (ATAC) capital campaign by members of the local Italian community. The Chancellor’s primary responsibilities include fostering the mission, vision, and values of Lakehead University and building bridges between the University and its stakeholders as well as the broader public locally, nationally, and internationally. “I am pleased to serve as Lakehead’s Chancellor and look forward to contributing to its institutional success over the next three years,” says Arthur Mauro. “As a longstanding member of the Thunder Bay community, I am proud not only to support Lakehead in this capacity but also to represent its character and the excellence it embodies.”
Brian J. R. Stevenson President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson took office as president of Lakehead University in August 2010. Prior to taking the helm at Lakehead, he served the University of Winnipeg as provost and vice-president (academic) from 2006 to 2010, where he was also a professor in the Faculty of Business and Economics. During his tenure at U Winnipeg, Dr. Stevenson was involved in a significant re-invention and renewal of many aspects of the University including the establishment of a new Faculty of Business and Economics, a new Academic Plan, new graduate programs, the promotion of internationalization, and a new enrolment strategy. Throughout his career, Dr. Stevenson has built a stellar record of leadership in academia and government; he has held senior positions at a number of high-profile organizations and universities including the federal government in Ottawa, the University of Alberta, and the Organization of American States in Washington. While at the University of Alberta, he excelled at building the institution’s profile around the world. In only five years he was instrumental in increasing international enrolment dramatically and was also responsible for establishing an international residence. Dr. Stevenson received his BA (Honours) and MA from the University of Victoria, and holds a doctorate from Queen’s University. He first taught at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), and later at the University of Alberta where he also served as vice-provost and associate vice-president. He later served as senior policy advisor to the Canadian Ministers of International Trade and Foreign Affairs and was a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. Recognized as a specialist in international relations and foreign policy, Dr. Stevenson has authored and/or co-edited a number of books and articles on Canadian politics, foreign policy, Canada-Mexico relations, Canadian security in Latin America, and the relationship between the Organization of American States and Canada. He has authored and presented dozens of conference papers in Canada, the United States, and Latin America, and has made contributions as a board member of the Canadian Council for the Americas and the Canadian Foundation for the Americas. Dr. Stevenson is a member of the Advisory Council of Fulbright Canada’s Network on North American Studies in Canada (NNASC) and the Editorial Board of Foreign Affairs (Latinoamérica). In addition to being a professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at Lakehead University, he also currently serves as chair of the Board of Directors for the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM).
Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti A native Montrealer, Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti moved to Western Canada and went on to become one of Alberta’s foremost educators and physicians. Dr. Francescutti received his combined MD / PhD from the University of Alberta in 1987. It was during his training as a general surgery resident that Dr. Francescutti became fascinated with the subject of trauma. This interest led him to spearhead a number of public safety awareness initiatives and campaigns. Dr. Francescutti was the founder of an award winning multimedia head and spinal-cord injury prevention program for teenagers called HEROES. He also developed an innovative emergency medical response computer program which enabled emergency responders to better treat and track patients’ injuries on the scene. Dr. Francescutti is the former director of the Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research, and has given numerous presentations and lectures internationally on the topics of health and injury. He has also chaired a number of committees and task forces which dealt with public health and injury prevention. In 2005, Dr. Francescutti was named one of Alberta’s 100 most influential physicians of the century by the Alberta Medical Association and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Alberta. In 2005, he was awarded a Champion for Children Award and a Paul Harris Fellowship from the North East Edmonton Rotary Club. In 2010, Dr. Francescutti was named the 41st President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. A great communicator and motivator, Dr. Francescutti encourages Royal College members to leverage their expertise and play a more active role in discussions over possible improvements to Canada’s health care system and the health status of Canadians. Dr. Francescutti strongly believes that the health care system needs realistic standards of care and far greater accountability of service providers.
Tom Brzustowski DOCTOR OF SCIENCE Born in Warsaw, Poland, Tom Brzustowski came to Canada with his family in 1948. He graduated with a BASc in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto in 1958 and a PhD. in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton University in 1963. A professional engineer, Brzustowski was a professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Waterloo from 1962 to 1987, teaching and carrying out research in thermodynamics and combustion. During that time he was Department Chair, later Associate Dean of Engineering, and finally Vice-President Academic of the university for more than twelve years. Joining the Government of Ontario in 1987, Tom Brzustowski was appointed Deputy Minister, first of Colleges and Universities and later of the Premier’s Council. In 1995 he became president of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the primary federal agency supporting university research in these fields, and served two five-year terms. Since October 2005, Brzustowski has been the RBC Professor in the Commercialization of Innovations at the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management. After becoming the inaugural chair holder of this professorship, Brzustowski said, “I want to try and make a difference in getting things done, as opposed to just writing papers that people might not read three years from now.” At his suggestion, the University of Ottawa launched an IP-TAP pilot project that provides free IP to small companies that might benefit from university-generated IP, but have neither the time nor the money to negotiate the normal licenses. In 2005, Brzustowski also took on the role of Senior Advisor and Chair of the Board of the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing, a scientific research institute exploring the quantum universe in order to transform computing and communications. In 2010 he became Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Council of Canadian Academies, an independent, not-for-profit corporation that supports science-based, expert studies to inform public policy development in Canada. His recent publications on research, development, innovation, commercialization and related issues include articles in the internet journal Optimum Online, and the University of Ottawa Press 2008 publication The Way Ahead: Meeting Canada’s Productivity Challenge. Professor Brzustowski holds honorary doctorates from many Canadian universities and has received the Engineering Alumni Medal from the University of Toronto, as well as the Gold Medal of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and the Professional Engineers of Ontario. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering.
John K. Naysmith FELLOW OF THE UNIVERSITY John Naysmith’s extensive career, which began in Northwestern Ontario, has taken him to western and northern Canada, south-east Asia, and equatorial Africa. Regardless of where Naysmith worked, he always emphasized the importance of the human component within natural resources management strategies and policies. In the 1970s John Naysmith was the Canadian Government’s Special Claims Representative for the negotiation of the Western Arctic Inuvialuit Land and Rights Claim. In a letter to Naysmith in May 1977 the Associate Director of the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, Washington D.C. said that the White House Fellows found the briefings enormously informative and extraordinarily good background and that they came away from the trip to the Canadian Arctic with a substantially enhanced understanding of some of the natural resources and native land claim issues being addressed by the Canadian Government. In 1985 John was appointed senior advisor to the Swiss-based International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources and project director for the development and writing of the National Conservation Strategy (NCS) for Nepal. John had dozens of community meetings country-wide, ensuring that the social, cultural and economic needs of the Nepalese became fundamental segments of the conservation strategy along with sound natural resources management practices. In 1988 Naysmith became Director of Lakehead’s School of Forestry and subsequently Founding Dean of the Faculty of Forestry. In addition to earning Faculty status, other achievements of the forestry program while Dr. Naysmith was at the helm included a very successful student recruitment program, a substantially revised undergraduate curriculum and the implementation of four, five-year international projects in Ghana and Nepal with federal grants valued at $5.2 million. A singular pleasure for John while at Lakehead University was the opportunity to meet with the students in the classroom on a regular basis, so much so, that for ten years after officially retiring he continued to teach his two international seminar courses. For 11 years commencing in 1995 Naysmith was also Founding Chair of Ontario’s Forestry Futures Trust Committee. During that time the Trust funded more than $100 million worth of forest renewal programs and independent forest audits on Crown forests across Ontario. Dr. Naysmith has presented conference papers and guest lectures in and out of Canada including Argentina, Ireland, Ghana, Japan, Nepal and the United States. In 1989 he was appointed Canada’s representative on the United Nations Advisory Committee on Forestry Education. While serving in that role he was the Canadian Member at the Committee’s 15th Session held in Istanbul, Turkey and the 16th Session held in Bangkok, Thailand. In 1998 Naysmith co-chaired a 17-country workshop in Tokyo hosted by the Government of Japan and the International Model Forest Network Secretariat. A Registered Professional Forester, Naysmith has a forestry degree from the University of New Brunswick and graduate degrees from the University of British Columbia and Harvard University. In 1967 Harvard named him a Charles Bullard Fellow in Forest Science. He has also received international, national, provincial and professional association awards. Naysmith and his wife, Etoile McNulty Robinson, have three children and seven grandchildren. Since the 1960s, a cherished feature of the Naysmith family life has been their forest and lake place in Quebec’s Laurentian Mountains.
The Honourable William G. Davis, P.C., C.C., Q.C. DOCTOR OF LAWS Mr. William Davis is a proud Canadian and a dedicated federalist who has been avidly involved in the Canadian political scene since 1959. Born in Brampton, Mr. Davis attended the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall and was called to the Bar in 1955. Mr. Davis was a Member of the Ontario Legislature from 1959-1985. In 1962 he was appointed Education Minister and added the University Affairs portfolio two years later. Under his guidance, Ontario’s education system was drastically reformatted. Of his many accomplishments in the field of education, Mr. Davis is most recognized for his role in the creation of Ontario’s Institute for Studies in Education and the establishment of Ontario’s widely respected community college system. From 1971-1985, Mr. Davis served as the Premier of Ontario. As Premier, Mr. Davis combined a businesslike approach to the running of government with a sensitive understanding of the needs and aspirations of the people it serves. He immediately implemented his own style, utilizing the administrative skills and thorough knowledge of government acquired during 12 years as a Minister of the Crown. Mr. Davis initiated a complete reorganization of government structures. During this time social services were greatly expanded while the process of government was simultaneously reorganized and streamlined. Technological initiatives, the key to Ontario’s future prosperity, were fostered. Mr. Davis also played an important role in negotiating Canada’s constitutional accord. His statesmanlike approach did much to promote the spirit of compromise that made the agreement possible. On April 17, 1982, Mr. Davis was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second. In further recognition of this accomplishment, on April 9, 1986 the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable Jeanne Sauve, invested Mr. Davis as a Companion of the Order of Canada at a ceremony held at Government House in Ottawa. From 1985 to 1986, Mr. Davis served as Canada’s Special Envoy on Acid Rain. This assignment was carried out at the request of the Prime Minister of Canada, and Mr. Davis worked alongside his American counterpart to produce a progressive report on this key environmental issue. Mr. Davis was also honoured with an investiture in The Order of Ontario. Presented by Lieutenant-Governor Lincoln Alexander at a ceremony in the Legislature of Ontario on May 6, 1987, he was among the first of 20 citizens to be honoured with this induction. In addition to these noteworthy accomplishments, Mr. Davis acts as the Director to seven major corporations. From 1985 to 2010, Mr. Davis was Counsel at Torys LLP in Toronto. He is also a member of the Governing Council of the University of Toronto. Mr. Davis has been awarded Honorary Degrees by eight Ontario Universities, as well as the Yeshiva University of New York, the National University of Ireland and the University of Tel Aviv. 2007 was the 40th anniversary of the Community College system in Ontario. In recognition of his role in the creation of this system, Mr. Davis’ also received Honorary Diplomas from George Brown College, Fanshawe College and Humber College.
Ronald Keith O’Dor DOCTOR OF SCIENCE “The oceans have been healthy for four billion years. But if we want them to stay the way they are, we have to act,” says marine biologist Ronald Keith O’Dor in his Canadian Geographic profile as the 2009 Environmental Scientist of the Year. “I just want to feel comfortable that I have done my best to make the world a better place for my children and grandchildren.” Just over a year after he earned this title, the international Census of Marine Life, of which O’Dor was the Senior Scientist, reported the findings of its decade-long work in assessing the diversity, distribution and abundance of marine life. The Census, which brings together the work of 2,700 scientists in over 80 nations, has aggregated more than 30 million species-level records obtained before and outside the Census as well as adding millions more from its own field work, including 1,200 newly-discovered and described species and another 5,000 that await formal description. “Although people have begun to recognize that biodiversity, particularly genetic diversity, is a valuable resource,” says Dr. O’Dor, “the efforts to preserve it in the oceans lag far behind those for preservation of biodiversity on land.” The Census, he says, “has not eliminated the unknown or counted every fish, but it has dramatically reduced the unknowable and created what we now refer to as ‘transparent oceans.’” . One important legacy of the Census is its creation of the Ocean Biogeographic Information System, the world’s largest online repository of geo-referenced data that nations can use to develop national and regional assessments and to meet their obligations to the Convention on Biological Diversity and other international commitments. Although Ronald O’Dor was born in 1944 in the land-locked town of Liberty, Missouri, his fascination with ocean life began at age 17 when he visited relatives in California. He first studied Chemistry and Engineering at El Camino College in Los Angeles, then Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. His PhD research in medical physiology at the University of British Columbia, which led to the discovery of the treatment of osteoporosis using salmon calcitonin, brought him closer to his interest in marine biology. O’Dor pursued post-doctoral research at Cambridge University and Stazione Zoologica in Naples and focused on the characterization of the octopus gonadotropin and its role in cephalopod reproductive biology. In 1973, Dr. O’Dor became assistant professor of Biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and later Chair of the Department. He led the research team that developed the technology for radio-acoustic positioning telemetry (RAPT), allowing them to continuously record animal movements under the sea. RAPT helps reconstruct pictorial maps of the habitats animals use and, over time, illustrates how environmental changes affect habitats. His successful application of this technology in his research of the cephalopod led to his role in the Census of Marine Life. Dr. O’Dor has been a visiting scientist at Universities all over the world, is a frequent contributor to scientific journals, and continues to be involved in Dalhousie University’s Ocean Tracking Network to monitor marine animals from 10 gram salmon to 100 tonne whales.

Shy-Anne Hovorka YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD Shy-Anne Hovorka is an Aboriginal singer-songwriter from Red Lake, Ontario. A graduate of Lakehead University’s music and education programs, today, the award-winning musician’s lessons extend far beyond the traditional classroom. As a child she grew up in and out of foster care until the age of six, when she was adopted by the Hovorka family. Many of her songs are deeply personal and reflect the feelings she had as a child, as well as her adult-life interactions with her students and the experiences and events of those close to her. Her music incorporates blues, soft rock, pop, contemporary, and folk music. After graduating in 2000 (HBA Music), Shy-Anne travelled to Seoul, South Korea, where she spent two years, using music to teach English as a Second Language to children from three to eighteen-years-old. She returned to Lakehead University and received her Bachelor of Education degree in 2003. After graduation, Shy-Anne returned to her hometown of Red Lake, teaching Ojibwe and music, among other subjects. “Black Thunderbird,” her first album released in 2007, soon attracted national attention, including seven music award nominations and invitations to open for artists such as Tomson Highway and Crystal Shawanda. Her second album, “Pseudo,” released in 2010, won her the Female Aboriginal Entertainer of the Year and Best Produced Album at North America’s Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards in November 2010. The album’s title song, “Pseudo,” co-written with Rob Benvegnu, was number one for six consecutive weeks on Canada’s MySpace. “Can’t Change the World,” from the same album and co-written by Jordan Elcheson reached number five on the National Aboriginal Countdown and the video became a hit on YouTube. It was requested that the song be used to open both the 2010 G-8 Interfaith Summit and the 2010 Winnipeg Folk Festival.
