WHEEL ALIGNMENTS now available at TML!

Booster seat use based on height, not age: AA wo-thirds of AA Members are not sure when school-age children should move from a booster seat to a normal seatbelt. On November 1 the mandatory use of child restraints in vehicles was extended by two years, with all children required to be correctly secured in an approved restraint until their seventh birthday — including booster seats. However, regardless of their age, AA and child safety experts recommend that children stay in a booster seat until they reach 148cm in height. Seatbelts fit people who are 148cm and taller, which is why children need booster seats, raising them ‘up’ so that the adult size seatbelt fits them correctly. Safekids Aotearoa estim-

aged kids in booster seats: ● No booster seat, no trip. Tell them it’s the law. ● Tell them how it works. A seatbelt is designed for people 148cm and taller so it sits across the pelvis and ribcage, spreading crash forces over the strongest parts of our skeleton. ● Let them pick their boosters. It’s important that children are comfortable ‘owning’ their booster seats. So no Dora or Barney boosters please! There is a wide selection of cool and inexpensive booster seats that children can choose from. ● Praise them. Praise them every time they buckle in their boosters. Praise them for being role models to their younger siblings and to children at school.

roposals by ACC to base levies for private motor vehicles on their safety ratings are a welcome move says Motor Trade Association (MTA). Safety ratings would be based on a system, developed by Melbourne’s Monash University, that rates vehicles on how well they protect occupants from injury in a crash situation. With significant improvements in

active and passive safety systems in recent times, the safety profile of the national fleet now varies significantly. Currently private petrol-powered passenger vehicles are charged $198.65 in ACC levies, while diesel powered passenger vehicles are charged $321.59. The levies are charged as part of vehicle licensing fees. Lowering these will be a welcome move for many motorists. The changes, proposed for the

2014/15 year, would mean the lowest risk rated petrol-powered passenger vehicles would face an ACC levy of $98.65, with diesel powered passenger vehicles in this group facing an ACC levy of $222.53. MTA has previously submitted that cars with a better safety rating present less risk in event of a crash to occupants — and thus a lower cost, from an ACC perspective.

Thomsen. ‘‘We asked a random sample of AA members what height a child should be to use a safety belt without a booster seat and only 36.2 percent knew.’’ Making sure that child and booster seats are installed correctly is just as important to keep children safe and checks often find that they are not properly fitted. Parents can get good installation advice by visiting a Plunket car seat clinic, or contacting an NZTAcertified child restraint technician at www.nzta.govt.nz/ childrestraints You can also watch car seat installation videos at www.mysafekids.org.nz/ passengersafety. ates that half of New Zealand children still should be using a booster seat at 10-years-old. ‘‘A seatbelt is designed to sit across the pelvis and ribcage, spreading crash forces over the strongest parts of our skeleton,’’ says Safekids Aotearoa director Ann Weaver. When using seatbelts that are too big for their size, children can suffer severe head, spine and abdominal injuries in a crash. ‘‘Increasing the age that children must use a child restraint to seven is an important step, but parents need to know that keeping school age kids in booster seats until they reach 148cm tall is going to keep them safer in the event of a crash,’’ says AA spokesperson Dylan

Nissan takes new path with big SUV BY DEAN TAYLOR issan has gone down a new path with the seven-seater Pathfinder — releasing a more refined, more car-like replacement for the popular SUV. Driving the new 2WD ST model from Jim Wright Nissan around Otorohanga, the first impression was how quiet the new model is. The second was how well it drove

N

FIT EVERYTHING IN. LEAVE EVERYTHING BEHIND. THE ALL-NEW 7-SEAT PATHFINDER. With a best in class 2,700kg tow rating matched with an unbeatable 9.9L / 100km fuel economy, your adventures are only limited by your imagination. Available in 2WD or 4WD. Starting from $54,990 RRP

for a big vehicle. Previously the Pathfinder was built on the same ladder frame chassis as the Navara utility vehicle— now it has a monocoque platform. It is lighter than the model it replaces, and uses a proven petrol engine for motivation. The 3.5 litre V6 makes 190kW of power and 325Nm of torque. The previous turbo-diesel engine had more torque, but in the lighter vehicle the V6 produces about the same overall power.

It seems the petrol option is more squarely aimed at family use — it is one of the reasons the vehicle is quieter. Power is delivered via a CVT transmission. The new design is also more rounded and aerodynamic — helping with drivability and fuel economy. In either the 2WD or 4WD models economy is around 10l/100km. Even in the base model the specifications are impressive. All models sit on 18’’ alloy wheels and have independent suspension all round. The ST models have cloth seat and door trim — with leather steering wheel and shifter.

All models have a 7’’ front display screen, multifunctional, six speaker audio system, a music server HD, steering wheel controls and Tri-zone climate control aircon. I enjoyed being in the driver’s seat, both around town and on the rural roads. Speed sensitive electric power steering ensures the right mix of feel and precision in all situations, and the CVT transmission ensures the right mix of power or economy for the driving conditions. I also enjoyed the roominess of the Pathfinder — helped by the new models longer wheelbase. With all seven-seaters, the options are endless, and Nissan has gone all out with cup holders, storage and configurations. Access to the third row of seats is made easier by a simple, one-step process that neatly folds the middle seat down and moves it as far forward as possible. Naturally all seats fold away in various configurations to provide stowage. The Pathfinder uses an intelligent key system, which operates central locking, alarm and immobiliser. It has a push button start/stop system. Tow rating is an impressive 2700kg for braked trailer. A full array of safety features ensures all models have a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.

The Italian (p parking) Job Formula 1 for all to see

When in Rome...

It isn’t every day you run across a genuine F1 car — but on our recent European trip we did find one that I believe was driven by Ralf Schumacher, and a replica — in the oddest of places — made famous by his brother. BY DEAN TAYLOR hen I travel overseas I find all aspects of how and what people drive fascinating. Robyn and I recently returned from Europe, where we spent a couple of weeks in Italy. Firstly, I was expecting to see more Ferraris and Maseratis — but after a week in Rome I realised the Smart car was in fact the ‘smart’ choice. Florence revealed a few more exotic models, and their small car preference — electric cars. Venice, of course, was carless. It was parking, especially in Rome, that was fascinating. The Smart car can be parked anywhere, and it seems anyhow, but whether the authorities turn a blind eye, or there are in fact no rules, everyone seemed to park however they could. Pedestrian crossings are fair game, and basically people will park well into the roadway — so long as there is still room for vehicles to get through. According to a tour guide, when it comes to driving it is all about who will concede first. And he said it wasn’t the Italian way to actually give way to anything or anyone unless absolutely necessary. He explained that is why standing at the pedestrian crossing waiting for traffic to stop won’t work. ‘‘Italians just think you might like standing by a crossing. ‘‘Step out and they will stop, or at least drive around you.’’ It took some getting used to — but he was right.

ON display in a shop window in central London is what I believe is a 1999 Williams FW21 driven by Ralf Schumacher. Schumacher was a consistent frontrunner in the 1999 season, but colleague Alex Zanardi, who returned to F1 after five years away, struggled all season and failed to score a point. Zanardi was dropped for 2000 in favour of F3 driver Jenson Button.

IT may be the only car in Venice — a replica Ferrari F2002 regarded as one of the most dominant F1 vehicles of all time. Driven by Michael Schumacher, it won 15 of 19 Grande Prix in 2002 and 2003, sewing up both the 2002 driver and constructor titles in record time, and never finished lower than second. Ferrari colleague Rubens Barrichello was second in the championship.

DriveBy captures Targa in King Country here was a new look to the Targa New Zealand podium this year as Dunedin duo Martin Dippie and Jona Grant claimed the overall and Instra.com Modern 2WD wins in their Porsche GT3 RS. Auckland pair David Rogers and Aidan Kelly (Mitsubishi Evo 10) won the Allcomers 4WD class. Heading into the fourth and final day of the annual multi-day tarmac motor rally event, the Allcomers 4WD class — traditionally the home of the overall event winner — was being led by Aucklander Jason Gill and his co-driver Mark Robinson in their Mitsubishi Evo 9 with Rogers and Kelly second and gravel ace Brian Green and his co-driver Fleur

Pedersen third in their Mitsubishi Evo 10. However Gill’s Mitsubishi ground to a halt with a blown engine in Sunday’s first stage near Havelock North leaving Rogers — an Auckland radiologist who contested his first Targa event in 2010 — to claim his first major win in the Allcomers 4WD class and finish second overall to Instra.com 2WD class winners Dippie and Grant. ‘‘We are not as fast as some, but to finish first, first you have to finish and I just don’t think the machinery can take people running full pace in an event as tough as this all the time,’’ said Rogers. ‘‘And you have to be up there for when that happens.’’

Mitsubishi ready to do deal

ANCAP about safe family motoring afe family motoring is a focus with the latest results from the Australasian New Car Assessment Programme. A people mover from Kia and one of New Zealand’s most popular cars have each been awarded a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. The recently launched Kia Carens and the Mazda6 performed strongly in their crash tests. Both vehicles have dual frontal, side chest and curtain airbags as standard. Also standard for both vehicles are antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC). AA Motoring Services General Manager Stella Stocks says it is pleasing the popular Mazda6 performed so strongly. ‘‘Kiwis took to the Mazda6 from its initial introduction and its popularity has significantly increased in the years since. That Mazda continues to invest to ensure subsequent models are safer is a testament of its commitment to consumers and also other road users,’’ she says. Ms Stocks says it is also fantastic to see a people mover in the mix with the Kia Carens receiving a 5-star ANCAP safety rating with ease. ‘‘People movers are a favourite for larger families and community groups. The Carens has been absent from our market for a couple of years but now it’s back and with a 5-star rating it offers Kiwi buyers a safe and affordable option.’’ Transport Agency Access and Use General Manager Celia Patrick says the NZTA is working to improve the safety of New Zealand’s vehicle fleet as part of the Government’s Safer Journeys strategy and it was great news that the range of top safety-rated cars was continuing to grow. ‘‘Crash statistics show that occupants of 5-starrated vehicles are much less likely to receive lifethreatening injuries in a crash than occupants of lower rated vehicles. With today’s safety technology 5-star ratings are increasingly become the norm, and we urge people to buy the safest vehicle they can afford.’’ The full list of ANCAP’s vehicle safety ratings, other vehicle safety information and the specifications of the rated vehicles are available online at aa.co.nz or rightcar.govt.nz

S

BY DEAN TAYLOR itsubishi has come up with an ‘outlandish’ deal for its new base model Outlander. The LS 2WD 2.0 litre MIVEC sports all the refinements of the new model, with extra economy to boot. The engine makes 112kW of power and 193Nm of torque, delivered via a 6-Speed CVT transmission. It returns an economy figure of 6.6l/100km — outstanding for a versatile, five seater SUV. For every day motoring Eco mode ensures good economy. The updated styling of the Outlander is eye-catching and distinctive. Even though this is a ‘budget’ model, there is nothing budget about the car. It runs on 16’’ alloys, has chrome accents and sports parking sensors and a reversing camera. The big screen gives a great view and I can attest to the accuracy of the guides. It is also home to the audio

7

M

system, which includes Bluetooth technology and the ability to play digital media. The 2WD drives very well, power is smooth and big brakes makes sure it will stop when you need it to.It is a quiet ride, and while the interior layout is

simple, it has all the information you need right at your fingertips. Storage is a feature of the Outlander, with plenty of options front and back — plus a huge boot with the rear seats down. I’m quite tall and liked the

fact I could stand up under the open tailgate. This model has a 1600kg braked towing rating. There is no doubt buyers of the Mitsubishi Outlander 2WD LS are getting a lot of car for their dollar.
