BIG WEEK: 82-year-old old John Wellman of Tokoroa talks bikes with new White Ribbon ambassador David Warren, who was riding a 1950 Norton International, in Te Awamutu Thursday afternoon. Mr Wellman, a former rider, also caught up with the ride in Tokoroa on Saturday. But on Tuesday evening Mr Wellman had gone missing in his hometown after his scooter slipped and toppled down a bank in the rain. He spent six hours trapped in a ditch, entangled in gorse and blackberry until he was found by searchers. BY DEAN TAYLOR It was only a small crowd which greeted the White Ribbon Ride at Te Awamutu’s Mega Centre Thursday afternoon, but that wasn’t important according to White Ribbon Campaign Trust chairman Ric Odom. He was part of the team that rode into town as part of the annual awareness event and says the support of communities throughout New Zealand, whether big or small, was what mattered. He said community strength

was measured in the way people treated each other, and the campaign was about getting the message across one person at a time. Riders from the Patriot Motorcycle Club and Te Ahi Kikoha were in Te Awamutu, hosted by Violence Free Waipa and Waipa District Council, and went around the local Mega Centre shops asking men to take the White Ribbon Pledge. Mr Odom says their message is simple — no violence is OK, but specifically men must ‘pledge’ not to be violent towards their women.

WHITE Ribbon Riders support each other as they share their messages with the public at Te Awamutu on Thursday afternoon.

We could need that ‘potable’ water The Waipa District Council Construction Site for the new water reservoir on Frontier Road is consuming between 6000-15,000 litres of water per water tanker — this is a huge amount of water and can service many families. Also, there are more appropriate times during the year to be building the new water reservoir when water is not a scarce commodity. Whether the water is being used for dust suppression under

the Resource Management Act/ District Plan or required for the consolidation of the foundation substrate. Whilst the water being used on the construction site may well not be ‘potable’ water supply, there is every possibility that if we enter a drought that this water may well be the key to saving our district — as it can be treated to make it ‘potable’ i.e. drinkable. Does it not seem ironic that in a time of restrictions (Water

Alert 1 for Waipa/ Waikato/ Hamilton Regions) when water is a restricted commodity, that Waipa District Council are frivolously wasting it on the construction site. One would expect Waipa District Council to lead by example and restrict/conserve their use too. Waipa District Council, be a lot more water conscious when you expect the residents to do the same. HAYDEN WOODS

Council responds: We thank Mr Woods for highlighting water restrictions and agree with him that water is a valuable commodity. There are significant cost efficiencies for ratepayers in building the reservoir during summer months when conditions are better for earthworks. The water on site, which cannot economically be treated and made potable, is sourced from a nearby quarry and is being as used as sparingly as possible.

College the best Time to conserve water

It is with a touch of sadness that I attended my daughter’s last senior prizegiving and the end of her time at Te Awamutu College. We were fortunate to have two hard working children go through the college and for them and their friends there have been plenty of opportunities academically, in sport and music with some great teachers across the subjects. Outdoor Education isn’t offered at all schools and I recommend anyone to give it a go. It develops great personal and team skills and run by some enthusiastic teachers. The school productions are something great to be involved in. The principal Mr

Membery always speaks very well and is liked by the students. The Excellence and Graduation Dinners and the Senior Ball are all wonderful events. It is amazing to hear for the last five years at the senior prizegiving that one of our students received New Zealand’s top scholarship with a deserving recipient of Holly Flay this year. To have these top students every year go through and give others something to strive for is very impressive for Te Awamutu College. Thank you to the staff of the College. We have enjoyed our association and would highly recommend Te Awamutu College to anyone. KIM McVINNIE

Waipa residents are urged to be smart about water use early this year following a summer drought and dry winter. Waipa joined Hamilton and Waikato District in going to Alert Level 1 to pre-empt tighter restrictions later in summer. Water Alert Level 1 means residents can use their sprinklers between

6-8am and 6-8pm, with hand-held hoses allowed at any time. Waipa District Council water services manager Lorraine Kendrick said the early restrictions were necessary as the water supply levels hadn’t really recovered since last summer. ‘‘The drought followed by a dry winter has meant

our water supply sources have not returned to their pre-drought position. ‘‘We are starting on the back foot this year with limited buffer and no room for complacency. ‘‘We need residents’ help early to avoid going to higher alert levels and to help us manage the supply of a precious and limited water resource.’’

Public help Police nab sex offender Police investigating a sexual assault on an elderly woman at a Te Awamutu hotel last week say community support was crucial in identifying and locating the offender. Detective Dean Schrader of the Te Awamutu CIB said Police were called to the hotel after the woman was startled by an intruder in her room. ‘‘The offender made sexual

advances that the victim tried to ward off before he eventually assaulted her. Her screams alerted other occupants in the hotel and her attacker fled. ‘‘The community gave crucial help to Police resulting in the arrest of a 34-year-old Te Kuiti man on Friday,’’ he said. The accused appeared in Hamilton District Court yesterday."

Mercury find heats up Courier’s week

Diamond set rose gold flower ring

TC261113AP01

TE AWAMUTU Volunteer Fire Brigade and St John Ambulance were first on the scene at our offices. They were later joined by the Fire Service’s Hazardous Chemicals Unit. BY DEAN TAYLOR A small amount of mercury at the Te Awamutu Courier caused a large scale hazard response on Thursday afternoon when the poison was spilled in the front office. Staff were sorting and disposing of paperwork when a small container of mercury was found in the safe. The old container wasn’t sealed properly and a small amount spilled in the front office. Mercury is the only metal that is a liquid in its natural form and can be poisonous if the vapour is inhaled. Te Awamutu Courier manager Alan Price says the advice was to call the emergency services and have the building decontaminated. Staff that had been working in the office were also assessed. Mr Price says it looked like overkill for such a small amount of mercury, but it was better to be safe than sorry.

Hamilton based Enviro Clean & Restoration cleaned the office before we re-opened later than usual Friday morning. Courier staff found more of the spilt mercury in the safe on Friday afternoon and the office

was again closed and Enviro Clean & Restoration returned to remove the offending material. The specific use of mercury in the printing industry is a bit of a mystery, although it is possible it was used in

$1199

either the early photo printing or platemaking processes. It is recognised by the World Health Organisation as an occupational hazard, with specific rules about exposure and procedures to contain and clean spills.

inform an implementation plan that will guide where we spend our cycling dollars over the coming five to 10 years. In the current plan we only have $50,000 per year to spend across the district and we need to make sure we are clever about how that is allocated,’’ she said. The types of cyclists varied from commuters, to school students, to recreational users and mountain bikers and solutions for each of them could be vastly different. Other suggestions included: ● A Te Awamutu to Kihikihi link; ● Linking the Avantidrome to Cambridge and on to Karapiro; ● Linking cycle routes to key cultural and recreation sites; ● Mountain biking facilities; ● Developing touring routes; ● More education and awareness. The feedback is currently being considered, prioritised and where appropriate, costed.

If would like to return to cycling in order to get fitter, but need more confidence; have a little cycling experience, but want practical tips; need advice on bike and helmet safety — or want to learn how to fix a puncture or a chain problem, don’t panic help is on the way. Two free Back on Your Bike Workshops for adults will take place in Te Awamutu next Monday (Bike Maintenance) and Thursday (Cycle Skills). The workshops run from 5.30-7.30pm at the Te Awamutu Netball courts. To register contact Megan Jolly at [email protected] or Janis Jeffers at [email protected] or 870 5437. Sport Waikato has produced a ‘Summer of Cycling’ calendar. This booklet has list of events and contacts relating to cycling within the Waipa district. The booklets are presently available on a display stand at the Te Awamutu Events Centre or you can contact Sport Waikato directly to obtain a copy.

Banishing all cars from urban areas was one of the more radical responses to a recent cycling survey that attracted more than 80 responses. The online survey conducted over three weeks by Waipa District Council will help to develop a cycling implementation plan for the district. Council also held two workshops attended by nearly 40 people. The respondent who suggested banishing cars said vehicles should be ‘put underground, or in tiny, narrow lanes away from human habitation.’ There were also requests for smoother seal, shoulder widening and better signage. Manager Road Corridor Dawn Inglis said cycling played a strong part in Waipa communities and council was keen to understand where users thought money should be spent to make it safer and more attractive for cyclists. ‘‘Our aim was to get the views of cyclists in the district to

THE site of the new water reservoir has been prepared for building — and will now sit for three months. It may look like work has stopped at the site of Te Awamutu’s new water reservoir on Frontier Road, but it is

all part of the plan. The site has been prepared for the building, and a load of dirt has been spread over the

area where the reservoir will sit. This will now be left for about three months to allow

the dirt to completely compact, at which stage it will be able to take the weight of the reservoir and water.

Summer reading get kids cracking A summer reading programme at the Waipa district libraries over December and January aims to get children excited about reading from an early age. The nationwide programme, which has been around in parts of New Zealand for 17 years, is free to children aged five to 12 years. Only 70 spaces are available at each library on a first-

come, first-served basis. Registrations open on Monday, December 2 with the ‘summer beach read’ themed programme running from December 16, through to January 22. District librarian Alison Gordon said the programmes were always popular and often over-subscribed. ‘‘The idea of the programme is to promote and

encourage young people to become readers early on in life and summer holidays is a great time to do that. The numbers are limited because of the space and staff we have available during a busy library period,’’ she said. Children on the programme must visit the library at least three times to meet with a librarian. At each visit they receive a small incentive

plus help to find books. For those children who finish the programme special parties are held at each library where they are presented with a certificate, a medal and a free book. There will also be food and entertainment. Children wishing to participate should register their interest at their local library from next Monday.

Te Awamutu Machine Knitting Club recently made another donation to Child Cancer Foundation Waikato. The local group has created blankets, jumpers, beanies, scarves, socks, slippers etc, either on machines or by hand. The items were presented to Sharon Robertson from Child Cancer, prior to an afternoon tea in St Andrew’s Hall. The idea to donate items came about after a discussion between Keith Hutton and Elizabeth Bealing. Mr Hutton says Mrs Bealing originally donated yarn for the knitting of beanies, scarves and socks. ‘‘We never had any idea that there would be such a huge response. ‘‘Elizabeth’s donation started other people knitting and donating to the cause. ‘‘Since May this year we have donated over 400 articles to Child Cancer for use in the Waikato and they have been astounded at the quality and colours of the garments donated. ‘‘Sharon Robertson from Child Cancer was able to meet many of the knitters and expressed her gratitude during her visit. ‘‘We are also grateful to Dawn til Dusk and Waikato Bakeries for supporting our efforts, by providing afternoon tea.’’

Te Awamutu’s Tegan Crotty has been confidently travelling on Waikato’s public buses this year thanks to an event she attended for disabled and older people 12 months ago. The teenager was among about 40 people in electric and manual wheelchairs, others using walking frames and sticks, and one with a guide dog who turned out to ‘have a go’ on the buses last year. It was such a success that another event, organised by CCS Disability Action and Waikato Regional Council, is being held next Tuesday, December 3 between 10.30am and 12.30pm. Tegan had just finished her schooling at the time of last year’s event and intended studying in Hamilton this year, but had never travelled on a public bus. ‘‘It was great having the time to figure out how to get on the buses in my wheelchair, because they’re not all the same, and it gave me the confidence I needed to travel on them this year,’’ said the 19-year-old. ‘‘For the first half of the year I travelled at least four days a week between Te Awamutu and Hamilton by bus to attend my course. Not having to rely on my parents, being independent, has been a real boost to my confidence,’’ she said. The regional council’s acting public transport operations manager, Ben Barlow, said: ‘‘We had a fantastic

response from people last year who had wanted to travel by bus around the city, but had previously been worried about how to get on board.’’ For this year’s ‘have a go’ day, an Orbiter and urban green bus, supplied by bus companies Pavlovich and Go Bus, will be parked in Caro Street for people to get on board. ‘‘This day provides a safe, non-threatening environment for both existing and potential new passengers to ask questions and to have a go at getting on the bus, buying a ticket and putting on the seatbelt fitted for wheelchair users. ‘‘It is also an opportunity for people to become familiar with our bus timetables and ticketing options, as well as to reassure them that drivers will help passengers if they ask,’’ Mr Barlow said. Afterwards, staff will also be on hand at the Transport Centre in Bryce Street where people can familiarise themselves with the platform layout and the ticketing systems. More than 80 per cent of the region’s public buses are accessible, with another 10 new low floor vehicles due to join the Hamilton fleet in the first quarter of 2014. ■ To find out more about the accessibility day, or to plan your bus trip, visit www.busit.co.nz or contact the helpline on 0800 4 BUSLINE (0800 4 2875463).

Quin Adams of Morrinsville (centre front) found the koi carp trap and processor amazing during a recent visit to the facilities at Lake Waikare in north Waikato. He was part of a Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club (Junats) contingent which had the set up explained to them by Waikato Regional Council staff. Koi carp are a significant pest in the Waikato River and the trial facilities at Lake Waikare are designed to trap them and then process them into a fertiliser for growing riparian plants that help protect the lake. The trial is being supported financially by the Waikato River Authority. ‘‘The kids had a great day out — never a dull moment, particularly when they saw dozens of huge live carp hurtling towards them down the fish trap chute,’’ said project spokesman Dave Byers of the council’s biosecurity and heritage team.

‘‘It’s great to be able to help spread information on protecting the environment by working with groups such as Junats.’’ Junats is for young people, aged 10 to

18, who have a keen interest in natural history, science and the outdoors. ■ For more information visit www.junats.org.nz.

Bloomin’ privet — here’s a break Waikato people who feel they’re suffering health effects from privet blooming this spring are being invited to take part in an allergy trial. Those wanting to take part should contact Waikato Regional Council biosecurity officer Darion Embling or Amelia Luxton on 0800 800 401. The trial is being run through the Auckland allergy clinic in association with Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. Waikato testing as part of the trial will be done in Hamilton on December 13. The test will involve a ‘prick test’ and a questionnaire. People taking part will need to stay off medication for three days beforehand. The announcement comes as the council has been getting its usual seasonal rise in the number of calls

about privet as the plants flower in spring. ‘There is no definitive proof that privet causes allergic reactions but people do raise privet as an issue affecting their health, and we’re keen to understand more about how they’re

affected,’ said Mr Embling. Under Waikato’s rules, land owners or occupiers are required to control privet on their property if a valid health-related complaint (verified by a medical certificate) is received from a neighbour. The privet said to be causing the problem must be within 50 metres of the complainant’s dwelling. Anyone may complain about privet causing health problems in public amenity areas such as: ● parks and reserves; ● playgrounds; ● alleyways and walking tracks. Privet is banned from sale, propagation, distribution or commercial display. It is also required to be destroyed in all transport corridors, such as along railway lines.

OCEANIA champions . . . New Zealand’s gold medal winning pursuit team of, from left, Lauren Ellis, Jaime Neilsen, Rushlee Buchanan and Georgia Williams in action at Invercargill. for all of us to get our heads around. We have a benchmark for the women and exceeded that.’’ Buchanan is determined to cement a spot in the team starting line-up for impending major events including the Rio Olympics after being the unlucky fourth member of the New Zealand pursuit team to miss out on a ride at the 2012 London Olympics where Ellis, Neilsen and Alison Shanks got the nod ahead of her. The longer 4000m distance suits Buchanan — endurance is her strong suit. Te Awamutu Sports club-

mates Buchanan and Neilsen dominated the women’s scratch race, finishing first and third respectively. Neilsen was in front with five laps to go, with Buchanan on her wheel. Buchanan took over the lead with one and a half laps to go and held out second placed Australian Elissa Wundersitz. Neilsen had further success finishing second in the women’s 3000m individual pursuit. Mid-Canterbury rider Lauren Ellis clawed back an early deficit to win the title from fellow Olympian Neilsen

with Georgia Williams finishing third. Neilsen had set the standard as the top qualifier in the individual pursuit qualifying in the morning, but Ellis pushed up the gearing and clawed her way back to finally grab the win in the final lap. She clocked 3:36.843 with Neilsen 0.2s behind, while Williams beat off Southland’s Laura Fairweather for the bronze. Neilsen capped a memorable championship placing second in the points race and omnium, decided over six events.

Te Awamutu 19-year-old Hayden McCormick showed his class winning the men’s 15km scratch race at the UCI Festival of Speed event in Invercargill — a lead-up event to the Oceanias. It is the first time New Zealand has hosted a Tier One event which begins the qualifying process for the 2016 Rio Olympics, attracting riders from six nations against a strong Kiwi contingent. McCormick can take heart from upstaging his second placed Kiwi team-mate Shane Archbold and Hong Kong’s third placed King Lok Cheung. Archbold is a professional rider who won Ra´ s Tailteann, an annual eight-day international cycling stage race in Ireland in May. Rushlee Buchanan also featured prominently in the Tier One event, placing third in the scratch race and fourth in the omnium. Her six omnium events included a win in the 20km points race and second placing in the elimination. The omnium was won by Ellis with Te Awamutu Sports’ Jaime Neilsen second. Buchanan had little time to reflect on her outstanding performances at Invercargill. The 25-year-old flew back to the United States (immediately after the Oceania championships concluded on Friday) for a weeklong training camp with her new professional team, United Health Care. She will return to New Zealand in time for the New Zealand road championships in Christchurch in January.

9446588AA

Rushlee Buchanan enjoyed a golden day winning back-toback titles at the UCI Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill. The Te Awamutu professional cyclist was a member of the gold medal winning New Zealand women’s pursuit team on the same day as she won the women’s scratch race. In doing so, Buchanan banked invaluable points — the Oceanias are one of five continental championships that now carry qualifying points for next year’s world championships and also ranking points for the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was all new for the New Zealand women’s team pursuit, moving to 4000m and four riders to match the men, in a change of UCI regulations this year. In their first outing, the quartet of Lauren Ellis, Te Awamutu Sports’ Jaime Neilsen, Buchanan and newcomer Georgia Williams rode an outstanding 4:29.000 to beat off the strong challenge from Australia who were only 35/100ths of a second behind. The Australian team was led by Olympic omnium medallist Annette Edmondson. The Kiwis had clocked the fastest time in their heat. New Zealand head coach, Dayle Cheatley says the win was very pleasing. ‘‘It was the women’s first ride at 4kms with four riders and to go 4:29 was right up there internationally. ‘‘It was a totally new event

Magic supporters remain entranced The underdog’s tag will sit just fine with veteran defender Leana de Bruin when a new era unfolds for Kia Magic in next year’s ANZ Championship netball competition. With a new coaching staff of Australian Julie Fitzgerald and former Silver Fern Margaret Forsyth on board, and a host of fresh input from a playing perspective, the vastly experienced de Bruin looms as being tailor-made for the situation. ‘‘I reckon it’s really exciting, a change is sometimes as good as a holiday,’’ she says. ‘‘I think there’s been a lot of hype around Pulse and Mystics and I suppose Steel as well about their recruiting but I’m looking forward to the challenge with Magic. ‘‘We’ve got a lot of talent in the group and while we haven’t spent a hell’ve lot of time together and may start a little bit slow, we’re only going to get better as the combinations start working.’’ De Bruin shapes as a key figure for Magic in the season ahead, the defensive rock’s ability to thrive in pressure situations for the duration of a game being a trademark feature. Jointly scooping the 2011 ANZ Championship Most Valuable Player award while playing for an underpowered Southern Steel and earning the same accolade in Magic’s 2012 title-winning grand final epic against Melbourne Vixens typify de Bruin’s no nonsense qualities. ‘‘You’re never too old to learn a few new tricks and I’m hoping Julie might just add something new to change things for me and make the players we play against think differently as well,’’ she says. ‘‘The situation at Magic is probably a bit refreshing for somebody like me and Case (Kopua) who have been there for a long time. ‘‘I’m really looking forward to the challenge it will bring and seeing some of the young guns stepping it up as well.’’ After starting her ANZ Championship career with Northern Mystics in 2008, de Bruin spent a year with Magic before heading to the deep south and two seasons with Southern Steel, returning to Magic in 2012, and the place she now calls home. Having just bought a house and with son Caleb starting school next year, the decision to stay put was an easy one for de Bruin. ‘‘I’m very happy where I am at the moment,’’ she says. ‘‘Caleb and I are quite settled in the Waikato. For me, this is home and I’m quite happy to stay here. ‘‘Netball plays an important part but at the same time I’m not getting any younger. I want to stay in the region and hopefully build some connections for me

for afterwards — you’ve got to start thinking about those things as well.’’ A rural girl at heart, de Bruin’s recent purchase on the outskirts of Hamilton has five acres of land attached and with it a festive wish. TC261113CT01

KIA MAGIC can again rely on plenty of Te Awamutu support when gunning for the title in the 2014 ANZ Championship. Among their most loyal supporters are this group from the Rosetown, from left, back row: Peter Roigard, Cynthia Dow, Ramsay Walker, ex board member Merv Gyde; front row: Bev Roigard, Sue Gyde and Beth Walker.

An intriguing battle is developing between Te Awamutu and Kihikihi for honours in this season’s Te Awamutu Tennis Sub Association’s Double Cup interclub competition. Both teams are unbeaten after four rounds, although neither line-up have the perfect record. Te Awamutu head the table with seven points, having had three wins and a draw, including a 4-0 victory over third placed Hairini (three points) in their latest outing. Kihikihi occupy second place with five points, resulting from a win and three drawn matches. Their win came in round four, beating fourth placed Otorohanga (one point) 3-1. In Kakepuku Cup, Kihikihi have got their campaign off to the perfect start with four straight wins for a maximum eight points. Their last two matches have resulted in emphatic 11-3 wins over Hairini and Te Awamutu. The scoreline, especially against Hairini was somewhat flattering as three of the games went to tie-break sets. Second placed Hairini (five points) rebounded with a 9-5 win over third placed Roto-O-Rangi (three points) in round four. Roto-O-Rangi beat winless Te Awamutu 9-5 in round three.

BY COLIN THORSEN Te Awamutu Taekwon-Do Club instructor Ian Campbell came through a gruelling test to upgrade to a sixth dan black belt. SMASH HIT: Ian Campbell successfully breaks three bricks with his right hand enroute to upgrading to sixth dan black belt. McPhail (both eighth dan) and Mahesh Bhana (seventh dan). ‘‘Ian put in a solid effort and performed exceptionally well,’’ Master Davidson told the Courier. ‘‘The many months of fitness training, studying his theory and perfecting his technical abilities certainly paid off.’’ Campbell sat his theory examination and presented his thesis in the morning, followed by his physical test in the afternoon where he had to display all aspects of the art, including self defence, pre-arranged step

and freestyle sparring, and special flying and jumping techniques. His examination culminated with a public display in front of family and friends. The newly crowned sixth dan black belt saved his best for last, impressing all and sundry breaking a total of six bricks — three with his left hand and then three with his right hand. Campbell also performed some pattern forms, some sparring and breaking techniques including side kicks and power breaks with both hand and foot.

HINE NOLAN with her individual world bronze medal. TC261113SP17A

BIG KICK: Hine Nolan competing in the pattern competition at the world championships in Spain. BY COLIN THORSEN Hine Nolan came through her first junior world championships with flying colours — winning silver and bronze in Benidorm, Spain. The Te Awamutu 17-yearold collected silver in team speciality where she had to complete a flying side kick over a 1.1 metres long ribbon. Her bronze came in the junior female first dan pattern competition where she reached the semi-finals stage in her speciality event, despite being ‘very nervous’ on debut

at this level. ‘‘It’s all a little bit surreal, I’m overwhelmed gaining a medal individually at my first world champs,’’ says Nolan who rated the tournament a great experience. President of International Taekwon-Do in New Zealand, Master Evan Davidson says it is a great achievement for Nolan to win an individual bronze medal in her very first world championships. ‘‘I am very proud of Hine’s success as will be all of her Te Awamutu College students. ‘‘She worked very hard

over the many months leading up to the world champs. As well as local training, she regularly attended the high performance team trainings in Auckland.’’ Nolan represented her country in eight events (four individual, four team) patterns, sparring, power breaking and speciality techniques — the only junior to have such a workload. The New Zealand team was third placed country overall with eight gold, seven silver and 11 bronze medals. There were 1042 black belt

competitors, representing 58 countries, including over 400 juniors. Over 90 umpires and referees (officials) attended. Of the eight from New Zealand, two were from Te Awamutu, Evan Davidson (eighth dan black belt) and Simon Mallinson (fourth dan black belt). Nolan would like to thank her family and friends for all their support, but especially her Taekwon-Do coach/ instructor Ian Campbell. ‘‘Without Ian, I would not have known how to generate the power needed for my techniques in individual patterns,’’ says the double world champs medallist.
