The funds raised will ensure that youth in our community will receive valuable national research based programs that will inspire them to become strong, smart, and bold adults. Girls Inc is pleased to announce that our speaker will be Iyanla Vanzant…lawyer, best-‐selling author, life coach and nationally recognized inspirational speaker. Girls Incorporated of the Greater Peninsula
Our Mission
Girls Incorporated of the Greater Peninsula is part of a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold. Girls Incorporated’s (formerly Girls Club of America) roots began in 1864 nationally and established on the Peninsula in 1945. Girls Inc has provided vital educational programs for hundreds of girls, particularly those in high-‐risk, underserved areas. Today, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives.
Program Girls Inc develops research-‐based informal education programs that encourage girls to take risks and master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. Major programs address math and science, education, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention, and sports participation. The research-‐based informal educational programs are distributed to over 150 Girls Inc Affiliates (such as Girls Inc of the Greater Peninsula) throughout the United States and Canada.
Funding
Girls Inc is a nonprofit organization that receives its revenue from public support-‐corporations, foundations, government grants, and individuals. Over 80 percent of the organization’s functional expenses go directly to support program services for girls.
Research
Girls Inc programming is offered anywhere girls are found, including Girls Inc outreach centers, schools, churches, community centers and housing projects. The majority of Girls Inc programming sites is located in low–income areas and provides a weekly average of 30 hours of after-‐school and summer activities.
Advocacy
Girls Inc informs policymakers about girls’ needs locally. The organization educates the community about critical issues facing girls. In addition, the organization teaches girls how to advocate for themselves and their communities, using their voices to promote positive change.
Program Scholarships
The Girls Inc of the Greater Peninsula Scholarship Program was created in 2005 to ensure that girls who might otherwise not participate in vital national research based programs are able to do so. Girls Inc. solicits funding so that girls from low-‐income families can participate at a reduced cost or at no cost. Program scholarships are offered annually to qualifying families.
