Welcome to Chicago and to the 2014 ACBSP Annual Conference As we gather in Chicago, “The Windy City,” to celebrate our 25th Anniversary, we hope to provide a truly meaningful experience. Our theme of “Engaged Learning in the Digital Age” offers an opportunity for you to explore ways in which business educators from around the world are utilizing digital solutions to engage students and prepare them for the ever-evolving mobile business environment in which we live. We are pleased to serve as the Annual Conference Committee, planning all the activities you are about to experience here in Chicago. We were also joined by Peter Horn as a member of this committee. The ACBSP staff and volunteer leadership have been working tirelessly to make this the best conference ever — with great speakers, numerous networking opportunities, delicious food and first class exhibitors.

We thank our 2014 Host Committee, made up of ACBSP Region 4 members from campuses in the Chicago area. They are excited for us to experience their great city, so don’t hesitate to ask them any questions you might have. We welcome our sponsors and exhibitors to the conference. Make sure you stop by the numerous exhibit booths, and pick up valuable information on products and services that will assist you in enhancing the quality of business education on your campus.

in ACBSP’s next 25 years by contributing to the ACBSP Time Capsule. Please remember to bring a note, letter, picture, or ACBSP artifact that you wish to share with those who re-open the time capsule in June of 2039.

You are part of an historic event this weekend as we come together to celebrate ACBSP’s 25th Anniversary. Special arrangements to celebrate in grand style include: an opportunity to receive your own commemorative shirt, featuring the ACBSP 25th Anniversary logo; special recognition for those attending several years of ACBSP annual conferences; a chance to meet nearly every ACBSP past president and hear their personal stories that have forged the culture of ACBSP; an opportunity to become personally involved

ACBSP has some exciting events planned as we look ahead to the 2014-15 academic year, including: the second ACBSP International Conference, scheduled for Nov. 27-30, 2014 in Athens, Greece; the 2014-15 Seminar Series; Fall Regional Meetings; and the 2015 Annual Conference, June 12-15, 2015 in Philadelphia. Enjoy the Annual Conference!

Please take time to enjoy your stay in Chicago. Our conference hotel is right on the Magnificent Mile, providing wonderful opportunities to see the many sites Chicago has to offer — from museums to shopping to fine dining.

Celebrating 25 Years New York, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Orlando, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City — those are just some of the locations ACBSP has visited for the Annual Conference each summer for the last 25 years. This year, ACBSP is at the beautiful Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile in the heart of the “Windy City” for its 26th Annual Conference, “Engaged Learning in the Digital Age.” So much has changed since the first Annual Conference, held May 11-12, 1989 at a Marriott hotel in Kansas City. There were 274 in attendance that year, compared to the more than 1,000 attendees anticipated here in Chicago. Events are planned throughout the conference, including a commemorative shirt, special recognition of past presidents, and an anniversary cake during the closing banquet.

Keep your eyes peeled throughout the conference for past presidents who have helped shape ACBSP’s rich history for a quarter of a century. Ask them to take a photo with you and share it on Twitter @ACBSPaccredited, #ACBSPTurns25, #ACBSPChicago. You might just win a prize!

25th Anniversary Polo Every attendee will receive an ACBSP polo shirt commemorating our 25th Anniversary.

We are glad you’re here to help us celebrate a remarkable 25-year history and explore the future of business education — learning how to sustain and advance excellence inside and outside the classroom utilizing digital solutions.

You will receive your shirt at the Registration Desk during check-in. Saturday is “Wear Your ACBSP Logo Day” so make sure you’re wearing this new shirt or any shirt from a previous conference you packed.

ACBSP Time Capsule A traditional time capsule is too small to house memories from our first 25 years, so we’ve brought a trunk to commemorate our first quarter century and we hope you’ve come prepared to help fill it.

On Sunday, any remaining shirts will be available for purchase if you’d like to take a souvenier home to a colleague who wasn’t able to attend the conference. The cost will be $25.

The Closing General Session on Monday will conclude our celebration with remarks by past presidents recalling ACBSP during their year as president in a moderated discussion. ACBSP President Charles Beem will seal a time capsule filled with photos and momentos from the last 25 years, to be opened at the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Bring your contribution to the Chicago Ballroom during any luncheon event. A table will be set up in the back with a Time Capsule donation form. During the Closing General Session on Monday morning, ACBSP President Charles Beem will place the final item in the trunk and seal it. The trunk will be opened at our 50th Anniversary in 2038.

General Conference Information One-on-One Accreditation Visits

One-on-one sessions are scheduled for Sunday morning. Schools may schedule an appointment time with a member of the Associate Degree or Baccalaureate/Graduate Degree Board of Commissioners. The purpose of the One-on-One Accreditation Visits is to create the opportunity for representatives from schools with specific questions about the ACBSP accreditation process to meet directly with Board members who can properly respond to those questions. Board members and staff can explain how to get started with the accreditation process, how to properly file accreditation reports, or how to prepare for an upcoming site visit. Appointments are limited, so sign up early to reserve your spot. A member of the ACBSP accreditation staff will be at the Accreditation Information Desk on Friday and Saturday only to assist with scheduling appointments.

Sponsored Refreshment Breaks • Starbucks Coupons

All of our refreshment breaks are sponsored by different exhibitors who are valued participants in the 2014 ACBSP Annual Conference. As an added incentive for you to stop by and learn more about their products and services, exhibitors sponsoring the refreshment breaks will be distributing a limited number of coffee coupons that can be redeemed at Starbucks, conveniently located in the lobby of the Marriott. Each coupon is good for a beverage valued at up to $4. Coupons must be used during the conference. There will be no money refunded for choosing an item for less than the $4 value.

Dining Guide

Roosevelt University, on behalf of the Chicago Host Committee, has prepared A Real Person’s Dining Guide to Chicago. It is available for printing at the Print Station in the Resource Center. Enjoy!

Handouts For All Sessions

Copies of the PowerPoint® presentation or academic paper presented at a keynote or concurrent session will not be provided at the session. Instead, we invite you to print handouts at the ACBSP Resource Center located in the South Alcove.* Computers and printers allow you to print the handout you need for any session, whether it’s a session you will attend, are considering attending, or have missed because of attendance at another session. This procedure is offered again this year as part of the greening effort by ACBSP at each conference to reduce waste and protect the environment. It will also eliminate the problem of running out of handouts due to attendance exceeding what was expected. *Not all sessions will be available at the Print Station, as some were not submitted.

A Flash Drive With Conference Presentations

ACBSP annually offers conference session presenters the opportunity to have their presentations included for distribution on a flash drive. Any presentation submitted to ACBSP by May 23 is included. Through the financial support of Cengage Learning, the flash drive is provided at no cost to attendees. Those not attending the conference or those seeking a second copy may purchase the flash drive at a cost of $25. Present your ticket that will be provided in your name badge at the Cengage booth in the Marriott Exhibit Area to secure your conference presentations on flash drive, while supplies last.

Attendance Prizes

The first attendance prizes will be given at the opening luncheon on Friday. Additional prizes will be awarded during the luncheons on Saturday and Sunday, and at the closing session on Monday. You must be present to win. Your name is printed on your luncheon ticket. These tickets will be collected at the door and will be used for the drawings. We are pleased to recognize several groups that have made special contributions in donating attendance prizes by creating a special category. The members of the host committee and our international attendees are two specific categories. Look for other categories to be added in future years.

Past Presidents When you visit the ACBSP home office, a grouping of photos in the hall pays tribute to all of the past presidents who have served so diligently on the ACBSP Board of Directors. Since 1989, these members have led the governing bodies of ACBSP. They are part of the history of this association, celebrating CHEA recognition in 2001 and again in 2011, and helping to shape ACBSP into the respected international accrediting body it is today. It’s unlikely that many of you will have the chance to visit the ACBSP home office and see the photo display of past presidents, so we include the list in this conference program. We thank all of our past presidents for their contribution to ACBSP and dedication to the continuous improvement of business education.

Bill Pollard Chairman Fairwyn Investment Company Best-selling author

• Bill Pollard • Fairwyn Investment Company

Bill Pollard, Chairman of Fairwyn Investment Company, a private investment firm, is Saturday’s keynote speaker. From 1977 to 2002, Pollard led The ServiceMaster Company, serving not once but twice as its CEO. He also served as Chairman of the Board from 1990 to April 2002 and was elected Chairman Emeritus in 2002. He now serves as an advisor to the company. During his leadership, ServiceMaster was recognized by Fortune magazine as the #1 service company among the Fortune 500 and was also included as one of its most admired companies. During this period, ServiceMaster was also identified as a “star of the future” by The Wall Street Journal and recognized by the Financial Times as one of the most respected companies in the world. Pollard is the author of the best selling book, The Soul of the Firm. His newest book is Serving Two Masters? Reflections on God and Profit. He is Chair of the Advisory Board at J. Dennis Hastert Center for Economics, Government, and Public Policy at Wheaton College. His son, Chip Pollard, is President of John Brown University. Pollard’s remarks will focus on the role of an advisory board to a business school. A key issue with advisory boards is finding ways to make the experience more meaningful for the participants and for the institution being advised, so that it’s not “just another meeting.” This is the topic of a special focus track today as well. Celebrating 25 Years With Those Who Led the Way Chicago Ballroom — 5th Floor 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

ACBSP has come a long way since its beginning in 1988. From a meeting between a few determined business educators with a vision to provide specialized business accreditation at every degree level, grew the global association we see today. Led by a diverse group of innovative and driven leaders making sure that vision is met, ACBSP — and its members — are world-class. We conclude our year-long 25th Anniversary celebration with a panel discussion made up of past presidents and executive directors who have been instrumental in the growth of ACBSP. Moderated by Doug Viehland, each will be given five minutes to describe the highlight of his/her leadership year. Charles Beem will close the event with a few remarks about his presidential year and seal the ACBSP Time Capsule, which will remain locked at the ACBSP office until it is opened at the 50th Anniversary celebration in 2038.
