Parish Project Update - 6th March 2015 I am pleased to inform everyone that we are moving onto the next phase of the renovation of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Saggart. A personnel crane has arrived onsite to assist with the re-pointing of the upper section of the bell tower, while the repair to the internal plaster ceiling is also being completed. Moving into this final stage of the project is in a sense the most important part as this is the section where most of the visible water damage can be seen from inside the Church. For health and safety reasons it may be required to close the front door of the church after morning mass, but this should only be for a short while. I would ask for your understanding and patience. This entire undertaking has been in planning for some time and hopefully any queries have been addressed through the recent special newsletter (copies can still be found from the parish office). Much like the workers needing the help of the personnel crane to support them in their work, we need the support of this parish and our parishioners to complete this refurbishment project. I am meeting with small groups of parishioners to explain in detail the great work that is going on across our parish at the moment - but also in an effort to inform parishioners of ongoing developments in all parishes and indeed across the wider catholic community, inviting people to lend their support in a way that is appropriate to them and answering any questions they may have. It is my intention to offer everyone the opportunity to learn more and in time attend one of these gatherings. If you receive a call from one of the volunteers on my behalf, please welcome the opportunity to learn more by accepting the invitation. Finally I would like to thank you all again for your continued support, patience and understanding for any inconvenience caused during the completion of the refurbishment of our Church. I am very confident that for us all, it will have been worth the long effort. Pope Francis Announces Holy Year Dedicated to Mercy Pope Francis has announced the celebration of an extraordinary Holy Year dedicated to Mercy. The Jubilee of Mercy will begin on December 8th, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and will conclude on November 20th, 2016, Solemnity of Christ the King. Pope Francis said: "I entrust the organization of this Jubilee to the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, so that they can animate as a new step in the path of the Church in its mission of bringing the Gospel of mercy to each person." "I am convinced that the whole Church can find in this Jubilee the joy to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of God, with which we are all called to give consolation to each man and each woman of our time. We entrust it to the Mother of Mercy, so that She may turn towards us Her gaze and watch over our path." According to the Holy See Press Office, the Jubilee Year of Mercy takes place on the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council in 1965. "This is of great significance, for it impels the Church to continue the work begun at Vatican II," a communique from the Holy See stated. The official and solemn announcement of the Holy Year will take place on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 12th. While an ordinary Jubilee year is celebrated every 25 years, an extraordinary Jubilee may be announced on the occasion of an event of significant importance. The last ordinary Jubilee took place in the year 2000 while the last extraordinary year was proclaimed in 1983 by John Paul II. Since his election as Pope, mercy has been a major theme close to the Pope's heart; his episcopal motto – Miserando atque eligendo – refers to the merciful gaze of Christ towards St. Matthew upon choosing him. Brian O’Keeffe RIP Brian O’Keeffe, formerly of Main Street, Newcastle died in England recently. He will be specially remembered at Mass in Newcastle on Saturday 28th March at 7.00pm. Brian’s mortal remains were cremated, and his ashes will be in St. Finian’s Church on the evening of March 28th. Receiving Holy Communion Practice In every celebration of the Eucharist, it is desirable for those for whom it is appropriate to be able to receive the Bread of Life. For those who are gluten-intolerant (coeliac), the Parish Council in Saggart/Rathcoole/ Brittas have secured the availability of gluten-free hosts. Those concerned are simply asked to go the priest and discreetly request a gluten-free host, which are contained in a separate ciborium which he alone will use. Those with mobility issues who find it especially difficult to approach in the communion procession to the altar are requested to inform the priest/minister of their need for assistance by having a companion stand in their place when holy communion has been distributed, so that it may be brought down to them in their seat. We hope these simple measures will facilitate everyone being able to share reverently in the privilege of being able to receive the Bread of Life in this most wonderful sacrament of God's love Four Districts St. Patrick’s Day Parade The annual St. Mary’s Four Districts St. Patrick’s Day parade takes place on Tuesday 17th March.
