Education and the promotion of the Filipino language are the foremost commitments of Adarna House . Our products—all original publications that feature Filipino values, culture, history, and experiences—are created only by the best Filipino writers, illustrators, and researchers. We are proud of our WiKAHON, the very first leveled tool for independent use by students to improve reading skills in Filipino. In working towards our corporate vision, Adarna House has developed educational courses for partners—from the public and private sectors—who share our enthusiasm for children, our commitment to education, and our passion for reading. Our primary partner and laboratory school is The Raya School (raya.org.ph), which offers progressive education for preschool and elementary levels. Our newly established Adarna Group Foundation, Inc. (AGFI) focuses on municipality-based early literacy programs. We work hard to offer enjoyable learning opportunities and memorable reading experiences as we strive to improve the quality of life of Filipino children. Through intensive research, consultations with experts, and conversations with children, we make sure that our products and services help nurture in Filipinos—old and young alike—their love of learning and of country.
Vision Mission To be the best innovative provider of excellent educational products and services that will nurture the values, love of country, and multilingual literacy of the Filipino child in every home and school. It will be every parent’s provider of choice to introduce reading and every teacher’s provider of choice to support learning.
To provide educational products and services for Filipino children all over the world so that they develop a love for learning, for the Philippines, and for the Filipino language.

WHAT KIDS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ANDRES AND THE KATIPUNAN
The Philippines is primarily a tropical country. There are sunny days and rainy days. People need to adjust to the wetness brought about by rains and also to the heat during the summer season. People use architecture as a way to adapt to changes in the weather. One of the simplest ways is to use something to cover your head, such as an umbrella. Can you imagine not having a roof over your head? We would all be wet during the rainy season or burned to a crisp during the hot season!

The pinanahang , or the lean-to of the Agta people from Pampanga and Zambales, is a simple flat shield made of grass held up by a bamboo frame. Propped up on one side to create a barrier against sun and wind, the Agtas would easily pick up and disassemble the flexible shelter according to their need. The nomadic Agta people use the portable screen whenever they travel from the coastlines during the dry season, to hills and mountains during the wet season.

The lowland bahay kubo found in many parts of the country also features large steep roofs that protect the inhabitants from the strong rains and hot sun. During summer, the thick layers of grass and palm leaves create a protective shelter from the sun, keeping the house cool.
The walls are often made with woven mats made of split bamboo, which makes the house breathe.
Made of dried cogon grass or palm fronds attached to a bamboo frame, the angled roof keeps water flowing off the house.
Bahay-na-bato, literally “stone houses,” are twolevel houses with a stone foundation and a wooden second floor. These houses are found in many parts of the country, mostly in the lowland areas, such as towns and cities. The bahay-na-bato looks different from the bahay kubo but is quite similar in the way it deals with the hot and humid climate of the country. The many openings inside and outside the house allow the wind to disperse the heat. The upper level has several large windows that let the wind come through the house. Inside, the space is divided by wooden walls, usually topped with a screen decorated with cut-outs, through which the winds pass. The houses often have at least two layers of window screens: one is made of wooden slat louvers and another made of see-through capiz shells. There are also smaller windows with sliding panels under the larger ones, called ventanillas. The panels allow those inside to control the amount of sunlight and wind that enters the house.
capiz shell screen
Did you know? Capiz shells used for window screens come from the “Windowpane Oyster” (Placuna placenta) that are often found in Pangasinan, Bohol, Capiz, Masbate, Sulu, and other parts of the Philippines. It is known as kapis by the Tagalogs, lampirong by the Visayans, and kalampinay by the Bicolanos. The shells are harvested, cleaned, and scraped to reveal the translucent shell.
wooden louver screen
Found on the northern part of the archipelago in the Batanes region are houses designed to withstand strong typhoon winds and monsoon rains. If the bahay kubo tends to be light with its bamboo frame, woven mat walls, and grass roof, the houses of the Ivatan of Batanes, with their stone and lime walls, are quite thick and heavy. The one-story houses are called sinadumparan or maytuab while the two-story houses are called rakuh . The houses of the Ivatan are meant to fight the power of storms and rains. The roofs are made with as much as six layers of bundled cogon grass, thick enough to prevent water from coming through. The roofs are often blanketed with nets, called panpe, and held to the ground with pegs or stone anchors to prevent them from being blown away.
Large windows that allow the breeze to flow through the room make the bahay kubo comfortable despite the hot and humid climate.
Some people think of the bahay kubo as a woven basket that allows wind to pass through.
The one-room house is raised above ground by means of stilts, which then also permits the wind to cool the house as it passes under it.

Architecture Adapts to the Environment
The natural environment affects us all. Nature brings storms and rains, as well as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. As much as sun, wind, and rain help plants grow and provide us with food to eat and raw materials to use, people cannot survive out in the open. Architecture is often used as shelter and protection against the elements of nature.

ADARNA GROUP FOUNDATION, INC. To complement the work of Adarna House and The Raya School, the ADARNA GROUP FOUNDATION, INC. (AGFI) was established on February 14, 2013. Working towards its vision of “Every Filipino Child Literate,” the flagship program of AGFI is called UNA NG A KL AT , and is an early literacy program involving 0-4 year old children, their parents/guardians, and municipality leaders and development workers. The program focuses on an LGU, builds on a partnership with the LGU through the local chief executive, links up with pertinent government agencies to ensure sustainability, and networks with like-minded private organizations. AGFI’s work is premised on a concern for all Filipino children, a strong love of country, and the belief that literacy of a country’s citizens is a key element in a country’s growth.
VISION Every Filipino Child Literate MISSION Development of early literacy among Filipino children 0-4 years old in par tnership with their parents, their LGU and community, and other like-minded par ties
Why is Unang Aklat important? The f irst three years of life are the most impor tant in brain development. Parents heighten a child’s experience with language and reading. The earlier these experiences are, the larger and longer their effects. A child’s reading skills have a bigger impact on school success than family income and social status.
