YOU ARE BY THEIR SIDE It is often said cancer is a journey. It involves many challenges, phases and emotions. It is not a straight line and it is tremendously difficult. Unfortunately each year more than 6,800 Manitobans will begin their own journey and many thousands more will continue down the paths laid out for them which began with their diagnoses. These children, young adults, women and men are so incredibly fortunate YOU – our donors, sponsors and volunteer fundraisers - are by their side on their journeys. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are proud to share the annual report for the year ending March 31, 2017. The Foundation is the only charitable organization exclusively fundraising for CancerCare Manitoba. Each and every generous gift you make stays in our province and supports cancer patients of all ages and walks of life. Your philanthropy enabled us to grant over six million dollars this past year to CancerCare to support prevention and early detection initiatives, leading-edge research, clinical trials and patient care programs and services. We are honoured to share how YOU helped Fred Clark, a man who in the prime of his life was diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer. Your support funds life-saving clinical trials which are available to Fred and many other CancerCare Manitoba patients. These trials are critical to advancing research and cancer treatment protocols. Five years after his staggering diagnosis, Fred is healthy and embarking on a very special journey, one which is miles and miles away from the cancer journey he’s been on. A journey that is fulfilling a dream and only possible because of you. We are so grateful for YOUR continued commitment to CancerCare Manitoba and all the incredibly special people and their loved ones who are living with this disease. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Doug Harvey, CHAIR

and keep a promise
YOUR GENEROSITY MAKES CLINICAL TRIALS RIGHT HERE IN MANITOBA POSSIBLE Growing up, Fred Clark says his family was very poor. He would often dream about different places that seemed worlds away, like the summit of Mount Everest. It seemed so unreachable. He studied it, and because it seemed so elusive it was incredible to imagine. Years later when he had his own family, wife Karin, and daughters Meagan and Alysha, he volunteered at his church running a youth group. During that time he met a girl who was battling severe anorexia. Her struggles were making her recovery seem impossible to her. Fred urged her to consider the way someone ascends Mount Everest was just how she needed to approach her recovery. “You can’t just take a helicopter to the top, it’s a process,” Fred recalls. “You’re endlessly up and down. And the last couple of days, you’ve finally acclimatized yourself to the point where you can make the push for the summit. I said to her, ‘listen, you get better, then I’ll go to Mount Everest, I’ll get my picture taken, and that will be a testament to you that you did this.’”
“I lost it on the phone,” says Fred. “I couldn’t talk, I was sobbing. I said, ‘am I going to die?’” The doctor didn’t mince words; he might. Fred had a 1.2 cm tumour in his throat, Stage IV cancer. The plan to save his life began immediately. The CancerCare Manitoba team consisting of surgeons, radiation oncologists and pathologists thoroughly discussed Fred’s diagnosis and decided on the best course of action. Thanks to your generous support, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation directs more than one million dollars to clinical trials each year. This funding enables trials to be accessible to Manitoba cancer patients like Fred. There was a trial available to him that could potentially save his life. The trial offered Fred accelerated radiation therapy and a new drug option. He was scheduled for 35 radiation treatments and three rounds of chemotherapy. He reacted so poorly to the chemotherapy that he admits he thought he wouldn’t pull through. His will was constantly being tested and he leaned on his care team often.
Ten years ago, a case like Fred’s would have had an outlook of 50 per cent survival at best. Ongoing donor investment His Mount Everest promise really seemed to resonate and has resulted in continued progress and new discoveries – her health improved. A few years after helping this young each and every year. With new treatment advances, woman through her health crisis, Fred’s own life hung in patients with this diagnosis who are treated at CancerCare the balance. He had been experiencing ear pain, a crushing Manitoba have hope for an 80-85 per cent three-year headache and couldn’t sleep. He was taken to the ER and survival rate. Incredible. Thank you! upon undergoing a painful needle biopsy, he received the devastating news – “you have throat cancer.” Even though Fred was going through such a difficult time, he did his best to brighten everyone else’s day around him – it’s simply his nature.

“He’s also going to plant a flag in honour of those who have helped him at CancerCare Manitoba and YOU – donors and supporters.” “That’s how he always is,” says Dr. Jim Butler, Fred’s radiation oncologist. “He’s such a gregarious guy and the staff love him. He’s truly one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.” fred knew he had to get a harley davidson
At times, Fred thought he might not survive his diagnosis. This is when his wife Karin reminded him of the promise he’d made a few years earlier. She told him “you have to live. You still have to climb Mount Everest.”
Fred sees things his own way. “I went out and bought a Harley. Got tattoos, got an earring. My kids thought I’d lost my mind,” laughs Fred. “I’m not a remarkable man,” he says. “I’m not special. I’m not anything out of the ordinary. That’s the worst And what about the special promise part about cancer – it kills regular, made to that special girl? Fred is ordinary folk.” keeping his promise. 25 YEARS OF EXCEPTIONAL COMMITMENT For 25 years, passionate groups of volunteer Angels have hosted the Guardian Angel Benefit for Women’s Cancer. On October 25, attendees once again honoured Manitoba women whose lives have been affected by cancer. Over 900 guests were inspired by the compelling personal story shared by special guest speaker, The Honourable Janice Filmon, C.M., O.M. Walking the signature pink runway with confidence and grace, the camaraderie of the 14 cancer survivors exemplified that together we can do so much. This silver anniversary raised an incredible $418,000. Throughout the benefit’s 25 years, generous supporters have raised close to $6.5 million, resulting in significant progress fighting women’s cancers. Funds raised support many facets of care and research into women’s cancers, including over 800 visits to the Guardian Angel Caring Room in 2016 alone.

Creating more HOPE together in Manitoba Communities demonstrated their spirit and heart in spades last year, raising nearly $1.9 million for cancer care in our province. Over 300 events registered with the Foundation in 2016-2017, one-third of which were held in rural communities. Outstanding! Annual events comprised nearly half of all community events. Several events, such as the Carberry Fair Potato Truck Pull, joined the ranks of repeat events. Many were one-time or first-time events like Miles for Marnie, Ayn’s Gratitude Challenge, generous school fundraisers like “pie your teacher” and lots more! The Foundation extends its gratitude to community event organizers and supporters for your creativity, enthusiasm and passion. You helped raise serious dollars for a serious cause. The impact of your efforts on current and future cancer patients and their families is immeasurable. Annual events are identified with an (*) beside the event name.

YOU MAKE DISCOVERIES A REALITY Your donations make it possible for amazing discoveries to happen at CancerCare Manitoba. One of our best and brightest breaking new ground is Dr. Sachin Katyal, Ph.D., a senior research scientist at the Research Institute at CancerCare Manitoba. His focus is improving treatments for brain cancer, one of the most difficult cancers to treat.
Initially, his research was focused on the differing reactions of brain cancers to common chemotherapy drugs. His current emphasis is drastically improving existing treatment methods to treat various brain tumours and transferring this knowledge to CancerCare Manitoba clinicians who care for patients. The hope is this donor-supported research will enable Manitobans to start seeing results much more quickly instead of waiting decades for a “wonder drug” to come to market. Dr. Katyal is deeply grateful for the donor generosity that has supported his team’s research.
improve brain tumour treatments and find ways to counteract drug resistance,” says Katyal. The ultimate goal of Dr. Katyal’s leading-edge research—improve patient survival and overall quality of life. Thanks to your continued support, his team’s aspiration to translate their findings into the next generation of brain cancer treatments is well on its way to becoming reality.
“Donors’ investment into our research program has enabled us to develop innovative one-of-its-kind technology to further new approaches into how we can dr . sachin katyal in his lab
Thank You FROM CANCERCARE MANITOBA
Every day 20 Manitobans are newly diagnosed with cancer. In addition, 45,000 Manitobans, diagnosed with cancer in the last 15 years, are living with cancer or are now cancer-free. Our goal at CancerCare Manitoba is that no life is cut short because of cancer. Caring for patients presents oncologists with many challenges. Treatments dr . sri navaratnam for some cancers don’t work for other cancers and some treatments that work for a while stop working. That is why the Research Institute at CancerCare Manitoba is an integral part of our-stateof-the-art cancer centre. CancerCare Manitoba has the right people to provide the very best care to Manitobans diagnosed with cancer. Our scientists and physicians are striving to better understand cancer in order to develop better and more
effective treatments. CancerCare also conducts clinical trials to give Manitobans tomorrow’s treatments today. And we conduct health services research to improve the patient’s overall experience while undergoing treatment. Thanks to donor support, since 2000 the Foundation has been able to grant more than $104 million to support research, education and patient services at CancerCare Manitoba. Research funded through your donations to the Foundation means better care, and hopefully, a long and happy life. I would like to thank Manitobans for their generous support for the work we do. On behalf of everyone at CancerCare Manitoba, we appreciate your continued donations to cancer services and research in this province. Thank you,
Dr. Sri Navaratnam PRESIDENT AND CEO CANCERCARE MANITOBA
