2016 Sun Devil Baseball • Feb. 26-28 • Long Beach State

Head Coach Tracy Smith Tracy Smith, who was hired as the fifth head baseball coach in program history on June 24, 2014, led the Sun Devils to a postseason berth, a third-place finish in the Pac12 and 30-plus wins in his first season at ASU. He became one of five active coaches, and one of eight all-time, to bring three different Div. I schools to NCAA Regional play as he guided the Sun Devils to a No. 2 seed in the Fullerton Regional in 2015. His 639 victories rank in the top 50 among active coaches in the NCAA, and his 19 seasons represent the fourth-shortest number of years on the list. Smith instituted a change in culture at Arizona State and his demand for excellence both on and off the field was represented as the Devils led the Pac-12 in both allconference and all-academic honorees. His emphasis on defense became evident right away as ASU vastly improved its fielding percentage and lowered its number of errors committed in Smith’s first season. The Devils finished fourth in the Pac-12 in both categories in 2015 after ranking near the bottom of the conference from 2010-14. Smith earned National Coach of the Year honors and was a unanimous choice for Big Ten Coach of the Year after he led IU to the school’s only College World Series appearance in 2013. The following season in 2014, Smith led the Hoosiers to the No. 4 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, the first national seed in Big Ten baseball history. He tallied more than 40 wins in each of the past two seasons at IU and led the Hoosiers to consecutive Big Ten Conference Championships for the first time in school history. IU won the Big Ten regular season and B1G Tournament title in 2013, marking the school’s first regular season conference championship since 1949 and the first outright crown since 1932, and advanced to the 2013 College World Series, which ended the Big Ten’s 29-year CWS absence. Smith has established a reputation of evaluating and developing talent as more than 50 student-athletes since 2000 improved their stock in the Major League Baseball Draft under Smith’s tutelage, including four who became first-round draft picks after going undrafted out of high school. In 19 total years as a head coach, Smith has seen 63 of his players selected in the MLB Draft, including 56 draftees since 2000 and 27 in the first 10 rounds. He has mentored 31 Major League Baseball draft picks over the past seven seasons, including the fourth overall pick in the 2014 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft (Kyle Schwarber) and three first-round selections in the 2009 MLB June Draft (Eric Arnett, Josh Phegley, Matt Bashore). In nine years at the helm of Miami (Ohio) baseball program, Smith compiled eight straight 30-win seasons, two NCAA Regional appearances and advanced to the Mid-American Conference Tournament finals six times. He began his coaching career as head coach at Miami University-Middletown in 1990, served as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) from 1993-94 and was the pitching coach at IU from 1995-96. A four-year letterwinner at Miami (Ohio), Smith was a pitcher and an infielder for the RedHawks, and played three minor league seasons in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Righting A Defensive Wrong The Sun Devils put together their best defensive numbers since 2010 as they finished fourth in the Pac-12 in both fielding percentage at .975 and errors with 57. ASU had ranked at or near the bottom of the conference in both errors and fielding percentage in each of the four seasons before Head Coach Tracy Smith arrived in 2015. Ranked 11th in the Pac-12 in both errors and fielding percentage in 2014 (.965; 76 errors) Ranked 9th in fielding percentage and 10th in errors and in 2013 (.965; 80 errors) Ranked 9th in Pac-12 in fielding percentage and 8th in errors in 2012 (.967; 74 errors) Ranked 8th in Pac-12 in fielding percentage and 10th in errors in 2011 (.971; 70 errors) A Two-Way Tradition Senior INF/RHP Jordan Aboites and sophomore OF/LHP Andrew Shaps are the latest installments in a long tradition of two-way players at ASU. Sixty-five Sun Devils in school history have comtributed both ways, a list that includes ASU Hall of Famers Jamie Allen, Doug Henry, Jerry Hochever and Lerrin LaGrow, and current Major Leaguers Kole Calhoun and Mike Leake. Streaking In February Series’ The Sun Devils swept their four-game series against Xavier to open the season and moved to 18-2 in February series’ over the past 10 years. ASU had won 16 consecutive series in February until dropping a three-game set with No. 1 TCU Feb. 20-22, 2015. Prior to the loss against the Horned Frogs, the last time ASU lost a series in February was Feb. 18-20, 2005, when they were swept by No. 1 Tulane on the road. #OccupyPHXMuni ASU drew 7,795 fans over three days on opening weekend. ASU ranked 13th in total attendance and was the only school west of Texas to draw more than 100,000 fans in 2015, and ranked 18th in average attendance with 3,082 fans per game. ASU’s 107,010 fans were the program’s most since 2010 and ranked as the fourth-highest regular-season attendance since 1988. Streaking Five Devils have notched a hit in each of the team’s first five games, including Colby Woodmansee, David Greer, Daniel Williams and Gage Canning. Three current Devils tallied double-digit hitting streaks in 2015, including Andrew Snow (13), Greer (13) and Brian Serven (10). A New Leadoff Man Junior-college transfer Daniel Williams assumed the leadoff role in the Devils’ order and reached base in eight of his 16 plate appearances with four hits, one walk and three hit-by-pitches, and led the Pac-12 with six runs scored in the opening weekend. Shaps Shines Sophomore center fielder Andrew Shaps entered the 2016 season with six total at-bats, one run scored and zero hits in zero starts. He left opening weekend with six hits, including two doubles and a triple, four runs scored and three RBI as he started all four games in center field with a perfect fielding percentage. Greer Comes Into His Own David Greer became a regular fixture in the lineup when then-starting third baseman Dalton DiNatale was injured March 3, 2015, and has notched a hit in 41 of the past 51 games he has started. He tallied a Pac-12 best .636 batting average and .688 on-base percentage, as well as a .818 slugging percentage to lead the Sun Devils to a four-game series sweep against Xavier. He reached base in 11 of 16 plate appearances and made just four outs as he went 7-for-11 at the plate with two doubles, drew four walks, and added a sacrifice fly. He tallied four RBI and scored three runs, and had a perfect fielding percentage in his first career series playing first base. Snow’s Impressive Freshman Campaign Andrew Snow hit .300 in 140 at-bats in his freshman season to become the 10th Sun Devil freshman in the past 10 years to finish the season with a .300 or higher batting average (min. 100 at-bats), joining current teammate RJ Ybarra, as well as former greats such as Ike Davis, Brett Wallace and Deven Marrero. Snow earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors and drove in the game-winning run on three seperate occasions, all in the seventh inning or later. #Woody Colby Woodmansee, who in 2015 became the first shortstop to lead the team in RBI since Jerry Maddox in 1975, and just the sixth ever (Maddox, 1975; Alan Bannister, 1972; Lenny Randle, 1968; Luis Lagunas, 1963; Roger Tomlinson, 1961), picked up where he left off in 2016 as he paced the Devils with six RBI in the four-game opening series against Xavier. Also the team leader with 24 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI games in 2015, the first Sun Devil since Zack MacPhee in 2010 to do so, Woodmansee notched a pair of multi-RBI multi-hit games in the opening series. He started all 58 games at shortstop in 2015, the first Sun Devil to start every regular-season game since James McDonald at second base in 2013, and has a hit in 50 of ASU’s past 62 games, and has reached base in 56 of them, dating back to the start of the 2015 season. A Seasoned Catcher Brian Serven, who was named a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award in 2015, is looking to join Don
