Alabama Reflections on the Peace Corps

“I was teaching a class of ninth grade (repeat) students English.. I had a professional grade Ampex recorder with me to play music, and record my experiences in Ethiopia. I put the recorder in my briefcase and secretly recorded them (my students) speaking in Tigrenia and in English. They were astounded and thrilled at hearing their own voices! It was a great way to get them to speak English and my class of 9C repeat student did the best on their final English tests of any ninth grade class in the school that year.” Ernest Russell Franz Ethiopia 1971 – 1974 Madison, AL 35758

(Peace Corps is) A force and a method for improving the world. The world has greatly improved in the last 70 years, and the US Peace Corps has not gotten the recognition it deserves. David L. Lambert Ghana 1962 – 1964 Huntsville, AL 35803

“(My proudest Peace Corps accomplishment was) Successfully working with students whose futures grew brighter through higher education.” Nicholas G. Augustus IV Cote D’Ivoire 1970 – 1972, US (staff) 1974 – 1975 Mobile, AL 36606
