A break for carers Your time at Leuchie should be a proper break for you and your carer. It’s completely up to you whether that means having a holiday together or some time apart. If you bring your carer or a family member with you to Leuchie, we’ll make sure you both enjoy a complete break. We’ll take on all the caring responsibilities so that both of you can just relax, recharge and have quality time together. Your carer will have their own bedroom so they have space to unwind and get a great night’s sleep. They can join you in our activities and trips, or go off and explore the local area – whatever makes it a special break for them. If your carer chooses to use the time you’re at Leuchie House to have a separate break at home or away, that’s absolutely fine too. They can have complete confidence that you’ll be in expert hands and having a great time at Leuchie.

It's great to get a change of scenery, as well as being confident there'll be the care we need. 5

Personalised 24 hour care Trusting your care to others can be daunting. At Leuchie House, we have extensive experience of providing respite breaks for people with a wide range of long term complex conditions. With our dedicated staff, you can be confident you will have exactly the care you need, 24 hours a day. Our expert nursing team are on duty at all times so you’ll know your medical care is in safe hands. They are supported by our dedicated care assistant team who will look after your personal care, accompany you on outings and do everything they can to make your break the best it can be. Leuchie House is registered with the Care Inspectorate and we undergo rigorous regular inspections, for your added peace of mind and security. 6

Experience of complex conditions Last year we welcomed people to Leuchie with over 30 different physical and neurological conditions. These include multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease, cerebral palsy, spinal injuries and stroke. Whatever medical condition you have, we are always happy to discuss this on an individual basis to assess whether we can meet your needs. We regret we are unable to take a booking for anyone requiring secure accommodation.

Tailored to your needs From the time you book a break at Leuchie, we’ll start to put together a personal care plan for you. We’ll ask you to provide information about your condition, medication and care needs. This will help make sure Leuchie is right for you and, if so, means we can start putting in place the care package you need. One of our nursing team will phone you before your break to talk in more detail about your needs so that your care plan is ready when you come to Leuchie.

From the moment you arrive, till after you leave When you arrive at Leuchie, you’ll be welcomed by our nursing and physiotherapy teams who’ll make sure your health, wellbeing and care needs are fully covered throughout your stay. We’ll also do everything we can to ensure ‘the Leuchie effect’ lives on after your break. Through our referral service to a wide range of community health professionals, we’ll help you get any ongoing care you need when you go home.

The house and grounds The house

Bedrooms

One of the most obvious things that makes Leuchie unique is the building itself, a classical country mansion house dating from 1779.

Our seven single and eight twin bedrooms are light and spacious with electric profiling and height adjustable beds and televisions. You’ll have your own nurse call system and personal alarm.

The house is fully accessible and a welcoming comfortable environment for all our guests. The large and airy public rooms have stunning views across the grounds and are full of interesting original features.

The grounds The extensive grounds add to Leuchie’s beauty and tranquillity and are home to lots of wildlife. On sunny days our large patio area to the rear of the house is a favourite spot for relaxing, or even taking part in an outdoor exercise class! While our woodland walkway and the paths around the grounds are great for exploring the Leuchie estate.

Single rooms are allocated by the nursing team on a care needs basis, or by payment of an additional supplement. Our twin bedrooms are extra large, with individual screens for added privacy, as well as great views across the estate. We also have three carer’s bedrooms, separate from our guest rooms, to give carers their own space to relax and unwind.

Anna’s Leuchie story “Leuchie is so much more to me than a holiday. Yes, I get a break – and so does my husband - but it’s much more than that. Being at Leuchie also gives me a chance to do some ‘normal’ things that I can’t do otherwise. “A highlight for me is getting to see my good friend Iris who I met on my first visit to Leuchie many years ago. We enjoy sharing a room during our holiday, shopping trips together and catching up.

the skies above the East Lothian coastline was one of the most exciting experiences I’ve ever had. In fact I enjoyed it so much I did it the next time I came back to Leuchie!

Being at Leuchie is also about getting the chance to be everything you can be. If there’s something you’d really like to do, the Leuchie team will do everything possible to make it happen.

Another important thing for me is the special way Leuchie has of keeping families together. That is more than most holidays can do. For me, it’s a rare chance to meet up with my sisters who live too far from my home for us to get together very often otherwise.

Since I’ve been coming to Leuchie I’ve been thinking about taking a flight at the microlight centre nearby. Then last year I decided it was time! With the support of the Leuchie team, that first flight up in

Being able to do all these things means the world. That’s what Leuchie is really about.”

Help with funding We know that meeting the cost of a break can be difficult. There are various sources of funding available and we’re here to give you help and advice to find the best options for you. Our bookings team has a wide knowledge of the different types of support and can help guide you to where to look for help.

Local authority funding Many of our guests have their breaks funded by their local authority through their annual self-directed support package. To find out if you are eligible for respite break funding, get in touch with your social

worker or occupational therapist to ask for an assessment. If you have a live-in partner, they will be eligible for a carer’s assessment. If you don’t have a social worker, contact the duty social worker at your local authority for advice. There is often a waiting list for assessments so we recommend you get in touch with them as soon as possible.

Charity and benevolent association support If you aren’t eligible for local authority funding, or need it topped up from another source, there are a number of charities, trusts and benevolent associations that may be able to help you. These include charities that support specific conditions, such as MS, stroke and MND, as well as more general funds. We’ll be happy to give you advice on this.

30

The Alan Bott Charity provides support for people with various neurological conditions, and their carers, to have a holiday, including a respite break at Leuchie House. They may also be able to help with transport to and from Leuchie. Get in touch with our bookings team to find out more.

Paying for your Leuchie break If you book in advance, there’s no need to pay for your break in full when you make the booking. You’ll pay a non-refundable deposit of £150 to secure your booking, then only need to pay the balance six weeks before your break. For advice on all the different ways you can get help to fund your Leuchie break, contact our bookings team who’ll talk through the options with you and point you in the right direction.

When you book we’ll explain our booking terms and conditions to you and what happens if you need to cancel. We’ll send you a printed copy and you can also find these on our website. We strongly recommend that you protect your booking by taking out travel insurance in case your situation changes. We know how important it is to keep the cost of each Leuchie break as affordable as possible so our prices are subsidised by almost 50%. We fundraise to cover the cost of this, raising the additional money needed through donations and grants. 32

Johanne’s Leuchie story “I am a full-time carer for my 90 year old aunt, Johan, who needs care day and night. “I fully expected to continue providing my aunt’s care when we came to Leuchie for the first time. I hadn’t appreciated that all the care would be provided by the Leuchie team so I could have a proper break too. When you’re used to doing everything for someone, it’s not easy at first to switch off. After a couple of days though, I could feel myself starting to relax and felt able to go off and do my own thing, knowing my aunt was in good hands. I love the whole concept of Leuchie House. The staff are definitely its biggest asset. They come across as meaning

everything they say and believing in everything they do. It’s clearly a vocation and not just a job. Every single one of them goes the extra mile for the guests.

the

Leuchie House

Having been to Leuchie myself, I can now tell Johan’s family with complete confidence, that when she goes on breaks in the future, we can step away while she’s there. We can be absolutely certain that all her medical and other needs will be cared for and that she’ll be happy. At the end of my break, I felt relaxed and recharged. So while I didn’t realise when I booked that I didn’t have to accompany my aunt, in the end I was very glad that I did!”
