WELCOME I’M SORRY DAVE, I’M AFRAID I CAN’T DO THAT. It’s been 50 years since the release of “2001: A Space Odyssey” and the creepy moment where Hal 9000 threatens the lives of the humans onboard for trying to disable the system. Well, robots are here and they are serving HR and other management functions. Artificial intelligence is being implemented in all kinds of ways, but what does automation mean for the workforce? How can HR be more “agile?” What does this management trend mean for the HR suite? Does it apply the same way to HR as it does to development or other operational disciplines? And if it does, what does it do to traditional models of employee feedback, management, and career development? We have never had a year with HR issues so much in the news, from the heartening cultural backlash over the notso-stunning revelations of sexual harassment in entertainment and the media, to the more stunning revelations of it in government and other sectors. We have been confronted with issues on how personal behaviors should impact employment, shocking examples of incompetence, and an act of outright cowardice that contributed to tragedy. What should employers do in these situations? They turn to HR. HR is also in the middle of an employment boom in North America and this is contributing to the growing sense of stress in the area of talent acquisition and talent retention. No CEO can get halfway through a mass media interview without mentioning anxiety about having the talent to achieve success for their enterprise. Who does that CEO turn to? HR. HR is in the middle of everything related to strategy and corporate performance. This is the best time ever to be in HR if you like to be in the eye of the maelstrom that is the fast paced modern business. In today’s world, by the time you get “agile” you are falling behind. This is the challenge of the modern CHRO and HR executive. We’re going to address all of these issues as well as allow you to network, share best practices, relax with like-minded colleagues, and have some fun. This is your conference and you should enjoy it before some creepy chatbot threatens to turn off your life support (or, more likely, just won’t let you change a flight time on an airline). Sincerely,

On behalf of the HRO Today Services and Technology Association and the entire SharedXpertise team, we warmly welcome you to the 2018 HRO Today North America Forum. This year’s theme is Driving Corporate Strategy. Despite technology disruption that has roiled much of American business, the need to attract, retain, protect, and serve employees has insulated companies. But change is also washing over how we do business—and sending ripples across the HR industry. As you will learn from our speakers, panels and sessions, a rising cohort of tech-learning and enabled leaders are rethinking creative models and rethinking business to drive their corporate strategy. The finalists in our iTalent competition are not surprisingly a part of this movement. They are investing in the overall strategy and vision of the future. Throughout the next several days, we will be exploring the highest standards of human resources in the management and support of services, technologies, and overall HR functions. The HRO Today Services & Technology Association is also responding to the needs of our members and delivering technology to help us better manage social media, online networking, on-demand learning, and virtual opportunities to engage. We are also launching new 10 minute best practice podcasts (TLC Talks) and a new HR Technology demo site, that will focus on what’s new and happening in technology, not just the shiny new toys. While the next several days at the HRO Today Forum will provide an excellent opportunity for our members and each of the Forum delegates to participate in great conversations and best practice sharing, the association allows you to continue these actions daily. Are you interested in opportunities to engage in networking with HR and business leaders and experts across the globe? Is online learning helpful to your organization and teams? Can the opportunity to engage in thought leadership and industry recognition help your employees and organization? If you are not already a member of the HRO Today Association, I urge you to do so and keep the conversation and learning active every month. As business people, we like asking questions. It can help clarify choices and allow us to focus on what really matters. But in an age of flux, paradox is ascendant. Success will come from embracing the convergence of HR and technology, and adapting to whatever happens. This has always been the “corporate strategy” for successful business leaders who take what opportunities appear and run with them. More and more, we will all have to learn to run this way and prepare ourselves for what’s next. It is our job to help prepare you and provide tools to effectively drive and lead, so we are pleased that this year, in addition to our global HR association, we also have an esteemed group of leaders joining us from two of our newest HRO Today member services programs: C-TEN and TALENT. C-TEN is the CHRO Today Executive Network and is the premier networking and professional development society for top HR leaders. TALENT is the Talent Acquisition Leaders Executive Network and brings together those HR professionals leading the talent acquisition function in their organizations for best practice sharing, professional development, innovation, networking, and news. Both programs are in partnership with The Wharton Center for HR.
