Sep 6, 2016 - 2030 Agenda: Advancing the Humanitarian Development Nexus. Joint Dialogue with the Principals of UNDP/UNFP
EXECUTIVE BOARD OF UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS:
2030 Agenda: Advancing the Humanitarian Development Nexus Joint Dialogue with the Principals of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS 6 September 2016 1:15-2:45 p.m. ECOSOC, United Nations, New York BACKGROUND: The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and associated Sustainable Development Goals has created an immense opportunity for the UN system and its partners to work strategically and collaboratively while breaking silos. In particular, the divide between development and humanitarian work has been one such area where the broader international community is using the 2030 Agenda to transform this divide into a strengthened nexus: the humanitarian-development nexus. There are ample platforms and institutional arrangements to have broad debates on such matters but the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS is in a privileged position to interact directly with these agencies in shaping a coordinated strategic vision and objectives in this area. Therefore, in order to maximize the unique relationship between the Executive Board and UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS, an interactive dialogue between the Board and the principals of the agencies has been organized to address strategic challenges and priorities of three agencies in fostering greater collaboration between governments, humanitarian, and development actors. This dialogue is aimed at being a lively, informative, and reflective space to discuss concrete actions to advancing the Humanitarian Development Nexus.
CHAIRPERSON: H.E. Mr. Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations, President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS
PANELISTS: UNOPS Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, Ms. Grete Faremo UNFPA Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin UNDP Assistant Secretary-General and Assistant Administrator, Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, Mr. Magdy Martínez-Solimán UNDP Assistant Secretary-General and Assistant Administrator, Crisis Response Unit, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu
QUESTIONS TO BE DISCUSSED: How does the implementation of the 2030 Agenda allow for a more comprehensive and joint approach by humanitarian and development actors? What does this look like in practice? The Commitment to Action outlines “a new way of working” – How do you see UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS readiness to take this forward in terms of policy and programmatic work? Addressing the large movements of refugees and migrants will be at the front and center of the upcoming 71st UN General Assembly High Level meeting in September. How does this link with the commitments made in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to leave no one behind, and what is the role of the development actors in this process? What is the major shift that needs to happen in terms of financing results against collective and humanitarian outcomes?
