Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) Update In 2012, OSHA revised the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). Specific changes to the HCS include: 1. New label requirements for chemical labels including exceptions for labels for herbicides and other products covered under EPA’s FIFRA regulations. 2. A change from Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) to Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and the requirements as they apply to herbicides and other products covered under EPA’s FIFRA regulations. 3. A new, 16-section standard format for the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). 4. Training requirements to cover the updates. In addition, OSHA has maintained the labeling exemption for herbicides labeled under FIFRA, but conflicts exist between the EPA label requirements and the OSHA SDS content. This presentation will cover both the basics of the 2012 changes to the HCS and the current status of the conflicts and resolution of the conflicts with EPA’s requirements for herbicides. Examples of labels and SDSs for herbicides will be presented.

Relating Herbicide Mode of Action to Symptomology Although there are many different herbicides, they can be associated into smaller groups based upon how they work in plants. Inhibiting a critical process or pathway in plants will result in specific symptoms (a type of fingerprint). Knowledge of herbicide mode of action and associated symptomology is important to determine if intended applications are working and when off-target movement occurs.

BREAKOUT SESSION – Herbicide Management ODAFF CEU – October 6, 2016 (Thursday) 8:00 – 9:00 Mike Vandeventer Rules & Regulations Update – Certification Update Kathy ODAFF 9:00 – Reid Smeda, Ph.D. Soil Properties Influence Herbicide Activity Soils are composed of sand, silt, and clay; decaying living material 10:00 Professor contributes organic matter and all these particles together influence applied Kathy University of Missouri herbicides.
