1787-89: Countdown to Revolution 2 What were the short-term causes of the French Revolution? Source: Hetherton, G - Revolutionary France CUP 1992

This explanation needs to be used in conjunction with Brooman pp.19-25. Missing from this extract is the importance of the food crisis caused by freak weather, which help explains the riots in point 3 above. The complaints lists or Cahiers de Doléances, drawn up for the meeting of Estates-General were also important. Some 60,000 lists of grievances were compiled between March and April 1789 all over France, which encouraged people to think about what was wrong with France and to expect that something would be done about it. In considering these short term causes, can you once again identify political, economic, social or cultural causes? Which type of cause do you think was most important? Activity - Using the diagram above and your text book, make a ‘countdown’ timeline of your own that explains the chain of events from 1786 to 1789. You should the use this timeline and your previous work on the long-term causes of the revolution to plan an essay for the Xmas examination that explains the causes of the French Revolution in a logical, coherent way.
