PREFACE

34th European Physical Society Conference on Plasma Physics This special issue of Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion (PPCF) comprises refereed papers based on lectures presented by invited speakers at the 34th European Physical Society Conference on Plasma Physics. The conference was organized by the Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion, Association EURATOM–IPPLM, Warsaw, Poland and was held at the Palace of Culture and Science, Warsaw, from 2 to 6 July 2007. The Local Organizing Committee of the 34th EPS conference, chaired by Zygmunt Składanowski, was established at this institute. The conference is among the most important events where recent results in all areas of plasma physics are presented. The basic purpose of the conference is to facilitate indepth technical presentations and discussions of recent topical developments in all areas of plasma physics and controlled fusion physics, and also to encourage cross-disciplinary exchange of information between various related fields in plasma physics. The overall scientific programme of this conference was set by the Board of the Plasma Physics Division of the European Physical Society, chaired by Jo Lister (CRPP, Lausanne). The Board set up an international Programme Committee (PC) for this conference, whose members are listed below. The PC formed specialist sub-committees, representing the different fields of plasma science: Magnetic Confinement Fusion (MCF), Beam Plasmas and Inertial Fusion (BPIF), Low Temperature Plasmas and Dusty Plasmas (LTP/DP) and Basic Plasma Physics and Astrophysics (BPP/A). The PC prepared the detailed scientific programme of the conference and selected the invited speakers for the plenary and parallel (topical) sessions. Among the large number of contributions submitted to the conference the PC selected a number of papers for presentation in parallel oral sessions. The majority of contributed papers were presented as posters in dedicated sessions. The chair of the PC and the chairs of the sub-committees accepted a very heavy workload. It is a great pleasure to take this opportunity to thank: the chair of the PC, Sibylle Guenter (MPI Garching, Germany); the chair of the MCF sub-committee, Taina KurkiSuonio (TKK, Finland); the chair of the BPIF sub-committee, Maurizio Lontano (Istituto di Fisica del Plasma, CNR, Milan, Italy); the chair of the LTP/DP sub-committee, Christoph Hollenstein (CRPP/EPFL, Switzerland); and the chair of the BPP/A sub-committee, Hans Pecseli (University of Oslo, Norway). The editorial team for this special issue of PPCF was formed from the chair of the PC, the chairs of the sub-committees and two members of the Local Organising Committee; Paweł G¸asior and Jerzy Wołowski (Guest Editors). The extensive refereeing load, compressed into a short time interval, was mainly carried out by the Programme Committee but also by many other experts. We are grateful to the PPCF journal team (IOP Publishing, Bristol) for their work on publishing the EPS invited papers. At the 34th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics, sessions of plenary invited lectures were followed, each day, by multiple parallel sessions, for a more specialised audience, which also included invited talks. Invited speakers in both these categories were asked to submit papers

to this special issue (the contributed papers at this conference, and at all recent conferences in this series, are archived at http://epesppd.epfl.ch). The Programme Committee and editorial team are very grateful to the many invited speakers who have responded positively to this request. This special issue opens with the paper by Fritz Wagner, the winner of the 2007 Hannes Alfv´en Prize, who gave his lecture after the opening ceremony of the conference. The following invited papers appear here in their order of presentation during the conference week; this ordering has been preserved in order to remind all the participants of the character of the conference.
