Weeks: Second Nine Weeks Group 2

Unit of Study: Force, Motion & Energy Essential Questions: 1. What is Motion? 2. Why is Motion important? 3. What is the relationship between force and motion? 4. What is a push? 5. What is a pull? TEKS/Essence Statements: 3.6) Force, motion, and energy. The student knows that forces cause change and that energy exists in many forms. The student is expected to: (B) demonstrate and observe how position and motion can be changed by pushing and pulling objects to show work being done such as swings, balls , pulleys, and wagons; Essence Statement: Recognizes force, motion, and energy and their relationships. Critical Skills/Postsecondary Goals: This section needs to be completed based on the students in your class. Instruction/Classroom Activities: Small Group Direct TeachActivity 1Introduce the topic and begin a KWL chart and ask the student’s What do we know about motion? What is motion? Is it a force? Then discuss what do the students already know about this subject. Next help the students come up with some ideas about what they want to know about motion and force. Assessment: • Level 3- The student will determine what they want to learn about motion and force. • Level 2- When given choices, the student will identify what they want to learn about motion and force. • Level 1- The student will acknowledge the KWL chart. Show the KLRN United Streaming Videos The Magic School Bus: Plays Ball (Total Running Time: 24:00) [http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=1E76B9BA-3D5B-47A4-BC4DCE47B1AC61A8&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US], then discuss what was learned from the video. Next show the KLRN United Streaming Videos TLC Elementary School: Rules of Motion and Forces (Total Running Time: 24:33) [http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=4749C27E315F-4DAB-919F-42178EFE698D&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=DSCE] and then disscuss what was learned from that video. Finally fill in the KWL chart discussing what the students learned from the video. Assessment: • Level 3- The student will determine one thing they learned about motion and force. • Level 2- When given choices, the student will identify one thing they learned about motion and force. • Level 1- The student will acknowledge the videos.

TEKS Based Lesson Plan Activity 2Discuss and model the use of the 4 Corners Vocabulary template for the words force, motion, push, and pull. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_(physics), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Force, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pull,or use Picture dictionaries, http://dictionary.reference.com/) Other words you may want to describe and define are lift, stretch, and squeeze. They are all types of pushing or pulling. Assessment: • Level 3- The student will determine an answer to the question asked. • Level 2- When provided with choices, the student will identify an answer to the question asked. • Level 1- The student will acknowledge the picture of one of the words. Activity 5This is the hands-on section of the lesson. Use the KLRN United Streaming Teacher’s guide to help you set up some of the experiments discussed in the KLRN United Streaming Video TEAMS: Forces and Motion: Getting to Know Newton (Total Running Time: 30:00) [http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetId=2BDC7606-5901-404E-9A58925073BC62C4&blnFromSearch=1&productcode=US]. Then show the portions of the video of the expirements you would like your class to try. You may wish to show the question and set up the experiement. Then pause the video for the students to work and go back to the video to see if the students on the video got some of the same results as your class. Assessment: • Level 3- The student will determine one fact about experiment. • Level 2- When choices are provided, the student will identify about experiment. • Level 1- The student will acknowledge the experiment. Activity 4Go through the five Smart Notebook files to review and explain in more detail about this subject. Assessment: • Level 3- The student will determine one fact from the Smart Notebook files. • Level 2- When choices are provided, the student will identify one fact from the Smart Notebook files. • Level 1- The student will acknowledge the Smart Notebook files. Stations/CentersLevel 3 & 2 Stations: • Station: The student will go through the Smart Notebook activities individually or in pairs. •

Station: The student will practice pushing and pulling many objects labeling which they are doing as they do it. (ex. As they push a toy car they say, “Pushing!” or “I am pushing the car.”)

Station: Prepare a tray with white paper in it. Then have finger paint to the students to touch a marble or toy cars to. Then place the marble or toy car in the tray and gently move the tray up and down causing the marble or toy car to move back and forth…showing movement. North East Independent School District
