The G oogle C odein c ontest g ives students around the world an op portunity t o explore t he w orld o f o pen s ource development. Google not only runs open source software t hroughout o ur b usiness, we value the way the open source model encourages p eople t o w ork t ogether on shared goals over the internet. Over t he p ast s ix y ears, m ore t han 3200 students from 99 countries completed at least o ne t ask i n t he c ontest. T his y ear w e h ope t o h ave e ven m ore students participate g lobally. P lease h elp u s s pread t he w ord a nd bring more students into the open s ource f amily! Participants c omplete “ tasks” o f t heir choice for a variety of open source software projects. S tudents c an e arn t shirts, digital certificates, and hooded sweatshirts for their w ork. E ach s oftware p roject will name two students as their grand prize winners and t hose s tudents w in a f our d ay trip to Google in Mountain View, CA, USA the next summer. Since o pen s ource d evelopment i s much more than just computer programming, there a re l ots o f d ifferent k inds o f tasks to choose from, broken out into five major categories: 1. Code: W riting o r r efactoring c ode. 2. Documentation/Training: C reating and editing documentation and helping others l earn. 3. Outreach/Research: Community m anagement a nd o utreach/marketing, or studying p roblems a nd r ecommending solutions. 4. Quality A ssurance: T esting t o e nsure code is of high quality. 5. User I nterface: U ser e xperience r esearch or user interface design.
