06 WHY STAFFORDSHIRE? THE MAGAZINE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS, MOVERS & SHAKERS

Why

Staffordshire? With a population of over 800,000 people and more than 57,000 registered businesses, Staffordshire had become synonymous with culture, regeneration, connectivity and opportunity.

With its friendly people, leading business infrastructure and cultural appeal, it’s no surprise that Staffordshire is attracting more and more businesses each year. We explore deeper as to why businesses are choosing to base themselves in the heart our county.

Business attraction

Staffordshire’s contributions to culture, music, film, food and ceramics are key to its appeal and the reason why almost twenty-four million day trips were made to the county last year. These visitors generated approximately £1.14 billion for our economy and supported around 28,000 jobs. This has attracted a range of retail and leisure businesses who have invested in their growth in the area. Both local and international tourists flock to Staffordshire to experience its culture and great visitor attractions including: Trentham Gardens, Alton Towers, Drayton Manor Park, Cannock Chase and the Peak District. The area also boasts award-winning theatres, internationally significant museums and three professional football teams. Amanda Dawson, Marketing Manager at Trentham Gardens, commented:

“Where else can you come face-toface with free-roaming monkeys, throw your own pot or find fairies at the bottom of the garden? Where else can you go to take in a west end production, watch theatre in the round, see Anglo-Saxon gold and a Spitfire? With a great, central location and easy access by road and rail, Staffordshire is the perfect place for a tourist destination such as Trentham to be located.” Within Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent is a leading destination for post-industrial heritage and cultural tourism, having claimed the title of World Capital of Ceramics in 2009 during the inaugural British Ceramics Biennial. The industry is now enjoying something of a renaissance with companies introducing new techniques and processes and investing in people to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. Steelite International, an awardwinning, internationally-renowned tableware manufacturer, is based in the heart of Staffordshire in Stoke-onTrent, but reaches a global audience. Steelite supplies ceramics to more than 140 countries around the

world and has more than 1,000 staff worldwide. Yet the company never loses sight of where it is based and the true value of the local people who have worked so hard to help build that success.
Neil Hooper, Managing Director at Steelite International, said: “We are committed to the resurgence in manufacturing and the ceramic
industry in Staffordshire. The county is full of hard-working people and is a place of success. I believe Steelite International is a shining example of what can be achieved through embracing the culture of the county. Our efforts are geared towards continuing to fly the flag for ‘Made in Britain’, whilst maintaining a firm commitment to making our core product right here in the heart of the UK, in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.” Tourism touches everyone – visitors, residents, employees and students who choose to come to study in the area. It provides employment opportunities for those unable to work full-time, and is a major employer of young people and ‘silver workers’, as well as being an incubator for the many ceramics and other creative-

based entrepreneurs who form the seedbed of an economy in transformation. Although tourism and culture means different things to different people, Staffordshire offers a unique blend between the two; offering something for everyone visiting as well as undoubtedly providing an avenue for economic growth and development, and a boost for local entrepreneurship.

Business investment

Millions of pounds have been spent on infrastructure which will create jobs and development opportunities in Staffordshire and there are millions more to be invested. Recently, global hospitality giant Hilton unveiled plans to build one of their signature hotels in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent’s City Centre. The multinational company, which has nearly 5,000 locations around the world, has signed a franchise agreement for the 140-bedroom Hilton Garden Inn on the Smithfield development. The hotel is expected to open in 2019 and will create around 50 jobs. Keele University Science Park has received significant investment in recent years; creating around 1250 jobs and lending itself to be a choice location for high quality businesses. Dr Mark Bacon, Director of Engagement and Partnerships at Keele University, said: "Staffordshire is going from strength to strength in terms of the opportunities available to businesses. Fresh and

knowledgeable talent, established expertise, national and international transport links and a wide range of accommodation options are just some of area's key strengths that are attracting businesses of all types and sizes to this creative and innovative county." There have been notable business success stories as a result of heavy investment, illustrating the wealth of talent in the commercial sector with the potential to be harnessed to drive the growth of Staffordshire. Emma Bridgewater, Portmeirion and Michelin have increased their sales by over 20 per cent in one of the most challenging trading years for decades, whilst others such as JCB, continue to be power brands of international significance. >

Staffordshire has also been successful in its bid to create one of the country’s 26 Enterprise Zones; creating up to 9000 new jobs and rejuvenating 140 hectares of largely brownfield land. The Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone (EZ) is based on a simple premise: unlocking seven key sites along the strategic A500 Corridor to accelerate investment in a range of employment sectors. The extra funding and investment available through the zone will help to expand the area’s advanced manufacturing sector and develop new technologies for engineering. The Enterprise Zone is a very strong marketing tool for strengthening the reputation of the area nationally and internationally as a great location with a forward-thinking, positive approach to innovation and growth. Enterprises like this are a great attraction for businesses and their staff, encouraging talent to the area and creating secure working conditions. Elsewhere in the county, Stafford has experienced a £1.2bn, a huge boost in aiding the county to prosper and grow. Part of this investment is the stunning £70 million Riverside retail development comprised of new shops, restaurants and car parking. Facilities such as these are a great

way of encouraging business into the county, offering talented individuals and their families an attractive and welcoming place to live and work. As the town attracts fresh investment, new housing developments are also taking shape which shapes the overall offering of Stafford and Staffordshire as a whole. Councillor Frances Beatty, Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration at Stafford Borough Council, said: “This work has and will continue to transform the area of Stafford, creating a more attractive environment for everyone. It’s absolutely vital that we have a city centre which is attractive and vibrant that people will want to visit and invest in.”

Investment in housing

By 2026 Staffordshire is expected to see significant growth outside of the business community, including a population increase of over 100,000, which will require the building of 55,000 new houses. This increase is a great reflection of how Staffordshire is continuing to flourish as it encourages people and businesses to invest in our county.

Staffordshire?

The high-speed rail 'hub' (HS2) will give an economic boost to the wider region. The £55 billion railway will cut journey times between Stafford and London to 53 minutes – a saving of 22 minutes.

Mike Herbert, Regional Director of The Trentham Estate for St. Modwen, said: “Staffordshire holds many very good reasons for businesses and their staff to locate here. There is good availability of quality sites and buildings for new employers along with expert property developers who can deliver bespoke buildings. Housing is a key consideration in the county as we see more and more people who are eager to live in good accessible and sustainable locations. Therefore, bringing forward suitable housing sites, including for top range houses for business executives, is a key part of driving forward the economy in Staffordshire.”

Investment in transport and broadband links

Located near the geographical centre of the country, Staffordshire has excellent transport links and is an ideal location for a huge variety of businesses; offering convenient links to the rest of the country via the M6 and A50. For businesses needing to travel outside of the United Kingdom, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, and East Midlands airports are all approximately one hour away. The high-speed rail 'hub' (HS2) will give an economic boost to the wider region. The £55 billion railway will cut journey times between Stafford and London to 53 minutes – a saving of 22 minutes. Not only will this benefit Stafford, but it will open economic benefits and opportunities for the people living in Staffordshire, the Black Country and Shropshire. Not only are we well connected in terms of road and rail links, but we have access to the best coverage of high-speed broadband, with companies such as Internet Central

offering affordable internet services and 4G mobile phone data. Scott James, Head of Sales and Marketing at Internet Central, said: “Staffordshire is a county that exemplifies Internet Central’s key objectives; to grow together through quickly building great connections. Based in Staffordshire, we are able to serve clients throughout the UK with a great network of local businesses backing us. Further, we have access to talented young people from the two universities here to ensure a sustainable future in an industry which is constantly in a state of regeneration and development.”

Opportunities

Entrepreneurs in Britain are starting new businesses at a record pace of 80 an hour, with Staffordshire being one of the most popular start-up hubs outside the capital due to its strong commercial property, workforce demographics and access to finance. Our county’s SMEs have access to over 35 region-specific grants and funding opportunities, which are put in place to facilitate business growth. They also benefit from cheaper office space in the region. At a mere £10.25 per square foot, office-space in Staffordshire is nearly three times cheaper than in Manchester. individual start-ups in 2016; offering advice on the development of business plans and providing workshops which cover the fundamentals such as tax, VAT, employing staff and financial forecasting. The county has two fantastic universities which, between them, have over 25,000 students and offer businesses across the county the prospect to tap into young talent. For the students themselves, they have the remarkable opportunity to work for companies like Bet365: the biggest online gambling group in the world with 19 million customers in almost two hundred countries and employing thousands of talented young people at their base in Festival Park. The county offers an abundance of opportunities for both businesses and individuals. Businesses can benefit from funding opportunities, international trade, low rental rates, accessible transport links, high calibre graduates and much more. Local people can also take advantage of the opportunity to work for fantastic local, national and international companies as well as experiencing the area’s cultural scene, with its first-rate theatre, food and ceramics. Staffordshire is a rare thing, a truly unique place with its artistic industrial heritage, distinguished and supportive business community and fiercely independent character. The county is home to thousands of thriving businesses and now, with ever-increasing regeneration, the county is a fundamental cog in the economic engine of growth for the whole of the country. Staffordshire is the place to do business, and will be for years to come.

10 REGIONAL GROWTH FUNDING THE MAGAZINE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS, MOVERS & SHAKERS

Regional funding boosts growth in Staffordshire Businesses across Staffordshire are growing as a result of receiving funding from the Jobs & Growth Fund; a regionspecific programme running alongside the Government’s Regional Growth Fund. Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce began the delivery of the programme in April 2013 to promote economic growth by working with local businesses. Since its launch, the initiative has supported 75 Staffordshire businesses with a combined total of over £6 million drawn from the pot. The Jobs and Growth Fund has driven private sector economic growth and created sustainable new jobs by supporting both new business and those looking to expand. The support is offered in the form of generous grants of up to 20 per cent of a project's value. Now, as the funding opportunities come to a close, we take a look at some of the businesses that have been supported. Based in Stone, providers of specialist equipment for the gas industry, Orbital, received £300,000 in funding. This enabled the company to make a £3 million

investment in state-of-the-art new premises, including new research and development facilities. Thanks to this boost, Orbital aims to use the expansion as a springboard to create over 80 jobs over the next five years – the majority of which will be based in Staffordshire. William Clough, CEO of CUI Global, Orbital's parent company, said: "We're committed to creating jobs and wealth within the region and the construction of this facility represents an exciting milestone in Orbital's growth." Richard Law, Managing Director of Orbital UK, described the business's commitment to Staffordshire: “We are very proud of our Staffordshire roots and of being part of the local community.

“We are very proud of our Staffordshire roots and of being part of the local community. We have a commitment to trade locally so that as we grow, we will see other local companies grow with us – and that will benefit our region more generally.” We have a commitment to trade locally so that, as we grow, other local companies grow with us.” Quality Films, a local manufacturer and supplier of high-performance and pre-stretched films, has undertaken significant investments as a result of the Jobs & Growth Fund. Previously, the business was spread across three sites totaling 20,000 sq. ft. This was insufficient for the company with additional transport costs incurred. The Jobs & Growth Fund was able to support Quality Films with a grant of £110,000 to help consolidate operations onto one 30,000 sq. ft. site. This project resulted in private sector investment of £990,000, as well as the creation of a further ten jobs. Sonia Griffiths, Sales and Marketing Director at Quality Films, commented: "We heard about the funding through our financial contacts. This investment has enabled Quality Films to consolidate current operations and to secure local jobs within the area for the next ten years." >

12 REGIONAL GROWTH FUNDING THE MAGAZINE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS, MOVERS & SHAKERS

The fund has had a direct positive impact upon some businesses' bottom-lines and has enabled others to enter into global markets. Swift-Cut, a Burton-on-Trent engineering firm, used money from the fund to expand their premises and to explore international trading. Peter Macneil, the business's Financial Controller, said: “We are thrilled to have received £87,000 to kit out our new £630,000 premises. “This investment has enabled us to move to a first-class facility and, by increasing our manufacturing capacity, we have accelerated the growth of the business. This in turn has enabled us to facilitate further global market opportunities.” Even though the Jobs & Growth Fund financing period is drawing to a close, Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce will ensure that it is on hand to point Staffordshire businesses towards alternative funding opportunities. By heading up the Growth Hub, Staffordshire Chambers aims to unlock, expand and accelerate the growth potential of businesses in the area and is keen to bring together and

develop a community of like-minded businesses and growth support providers. Matt Hustwit, Funding Advisor at Staffordshire Chambers, said: “We

The Growth Hub offers a ‘one stop shop’, which signposts businesses to local and national programmes, thus providing targeted, faceto-face support on the delivery of: Access to Finance, Resource Efficiency, Innovation, Mentoring, Growth Coaching, Manufacturing Advice, Start up support and Export Advice. Due to the sheer range of support available, searching for possible funding opportunities can become time-consuming and frustrating. This is where The Growth Hub comes in, by helping to eliminate the need for Googling and complex

form filling. Matt continued: “We are fortunate to have a wide range of private and public sector suppliers of support but there is currently nowhere to turn if you are not sure what specific help you need. The Growth Hub will provide access to support for people who are unclear about what is out there, rather than offering the support itself. “The amount of growth seen so far through this project has been fantastic for the area and we look forward to working with more businesses to support them and to ensure that Staffordshire remains a great place to do business.”

18 SKILLS GAP

THE MAGAZINE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS, MOVERS & SHAKERS

Mind the gap: What can employers do to ensure a sustainable future? When we talk about educating students to compete in tomorrow’s economy, the term ‘skills gap’ nearly always follows. Findings from the UK Commission of Employment and Skills (UKCES) reveal that one in four jobs are going unfilled in the UK due to a shortage in the skills that are needed for these positions. Additional task force reports predict that the problem will become exacerbated in the coming decades, when ‘digital skills’ – a catch-all phrase encompassing everything from email

The current skills shortage is not only preventing businesses from finding the right people with the right skills, it is also leading to significant wage pressures as employers are forced to pay an ever-higher premium for the best people. These two issues have the ability to severely limit the true potential of our economy and damage our global competitiveness.

In an academic institution like our own we also need to see more emphasis on and investment in academic apprenticeships through the new Futures Programme, an initiative supported by chambers and now having positive impact across Stoke-on-Trent. and social media to more advanced functions like working with software and programming computers – become more in-demand. If Staffordshire is to become a leader in innovation, then it is vital not only that we have the right levels of funding, but more importantly that we have a skilled workforce that can help businesses grow to be smarter, better and faster.

Mark Kent, Principal at City of Stokeon-Trent Sixth Form College, believes that learners should be focusing on preparation for an occupation, rather than a broader sector or a narrow job. Mark said: “Our priority at Stoke-onTrent Sixth Form College is to learn about the local and national economic climate and find out exactly what businesses and universities require from school and college leavers. It

Mark Kent, Principal at City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College

is key that students coming into the workforce from education are workready.” The UK government has begun to act on the issue. In 2014, it provided the British Computing Society with more than £2 million to train teachers in computing skills, including coding, so that they could effectively teach these skills to their students. This type of government support and resource allocation is important, but this alone won’t solve the skills gap, with big shortages of teachers in sciences in particular. Mark explained: “In an academic institution like our own we also need to see more emphasis on and investment in academic apprenticeships through the new Futures Programme, an initiative supported by Staffordshire Chambers, which is having positive impact across Stoke-on-Trent. The programme allows talented students to ‘try before you buy’ in a range of careers through immersive work experience activity, master classes and inspirational events which enable them to see the application of their studies and be inspired to seek future employment in these industries. The

SKILLS GAP 19

THE MAGAZINE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS, MOVERS & SHAKERS

skills and experiences gained through this process are vital in industries such as IT where almost a third of the workforce will retire in the next decade.”

What can employers do? One way in which the private sector can give back to communities and help shape the next generation, is by volunteering to help educate and inspire local school children. Financial investment is important, but investing time and knowledge into communities is equally so. A conscientious and socially responsible approach is needed by both the government and local businesses in order to prevent a skills shortage. This will in turn pay dividends for the private sector. By investing resources such as time and mentorship locally, private

organisations, large or small, can directly contribute to fostering tomorrow’s innovators and future candidates for their own recruitment pools. Mark continued: “The government must continue to work to improve the transition from education to work by supporting initiatives such as the Futures Programme which enable students of all ages to experience the world of work, and to be inspired to seek employment in sectors most in need of a highly skilled future workforce. This will help firms to boost productivity and growth. If you can help provide placements, mentoring, inspirational events or support the initiative financially, contact Georgia Smith at [email protected] “A second initiative, aimed at improving science outcomes and

recruitment of the best science teachers to the city in order to improve the skills of the workforce of the future, is also being launched this summer. More information can be found at potteriessciencefestival.org” Ultimately, the best chance of developing a solution to the emerging skills gap in Staffordshire and the UK overall, is through a concerted effort between government, education and business. By working together, we can have real impact on the opportunities that young people can access and the opportunity to inspire them to seek employment in local businesses once their studies are complete. Learning digital skills will also help them to prepare for the future and ensure a sustainable economy.

Apprentice star gives top tips to start-ups BBC’s The Apprentice finalist and award-winning CEO, Nick Holzherr has shared his top tips for Staffordshire start-ups to go alongside his appearance at the region’s largest networking event, Let’s Do Business.

Nick Holzherr, CEO of Helium Ventures and Finalist of BBC’s The Apprentice

Nick is Founder and CEO of Helium Ventures, a group that founded and operates food platform www.whisk.com and HR software company, Air.

Nick Holzherr: How to bring your business to the next level in under 60-minutes Build a professional website Having a good website is essential – it’s often what people will look at after talking to you or hearing about you – so having something slick is essential. In the last five years a huge number of solutions have emerged which allow you to set up a really professional,

mobile-optimised (60-70 per cent of people will look at your website on mobile, don’t neglect this.) website in less than an hour.

Buy a lead list of clients

Early on in the business journey, professional branding will give your company credibility and help you convert leads into customers more easily. Luckily, getting some professional branding done is now simple, with lots of freelance designers offering their service a very low cost.

For many businesses, one of the problems they have is working out how to drum up new business. The most effective way I’ve found is to carry out some lead generation. With your customer persona (include some location specifics) – create a task on a platform such as UpWork and a freelancer will create a spreadsheet for you with company names, locations, contacts and, most importantly, email addresses.

Define customer persona clearly

Create a great pitch deck together

Make your brand beautiful

Being clear about who your customers are will help you perform much better with regards to marketing and sales.

For most prospective clients, employees, mentors or investors, having an investor deck will really help you to explain your business well. I think it’s time well spent to create yourself a template pitch deck which you can then tailor for different uses.

New domestic abuse advocates ‘could save lives’ The direct cost of domestic abuse to UK businesses is around £1.9 billion per year, excluding lost productivity, performance and the inevitable effects that this will have on peers. Businesses often believe that domestic violence is a private issue, but research has identified that one-third of all incidents are happening in the workplace. Because of this, a growing number of employers are waking up to the impacts that domestic violence is having on their staff. Sue Arnold, Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire, said: “Domestic abuse has a devastating impact on victims and can affect the whole of their lives, including their work. “Colleagues may notice changes in behavior, such as problems with concentration, anxiety, dips in work quality and regularly arriving late or leaving early, which could signal abuse at home.” The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is now fully-funding two days of training to enable employees to become Domestic Abuse Advocates in their workplace and potentially save lives. Domestic Abuse Advocates will be made fully aware of the effects that domestic violence has on an individual, in order to be able to spot the signs that someone is suffering. They will also be in a position to offer suitable advice to the victim as well as their colleagues. Larger organisations, who may wish to train a greater number of their staff, can do so in-house, whilst all other training will take place every other month at various locations within

It is very positive to see that in the first quarter of 2017, Staffordshire’s economy has seen growth. This overall increase is apparent in the level of UK sales and orders, and in exporting activity in the manufacturing and services sectors. Compared with three months ago, businesses said they were more confident of achieving an increase in turnover and profitability in the year ahead. However, more businesses now expect the price of their goods or services to increase. This reflects the impact of exchange rates, a rise in raw material prices and other

costs, such as business rates. In a post-Brexit climate, the outlook for businesses in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire is very positive. Businesses are resilient and will rise to embrace new opportunities. Remaining competitive is the priority, which means having access to a skilled workforce and freedom from any additional costs, taxes and bureaucracy.

Staffordshire Chambers is here to support your businesses - Get in touch with a member of the chambers' team on 01782 202222.

Despite political events rivalling the storyline of a Jeffrey Archer novel, we are still seeing a lot of good news out there. Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that the UK’s unemployment rate was down from 5.1 per cent to 4.7 per cent for the three months ending in February, versus a year earlier. Further, recent Purchasing Manager Indices continue to signal expansion in both manufacturing and services sectors. These numbers tie in with the sterling work clearly being done by Staffordshire Chambers’ members. 26 per cent of manufacturers and 34 per cent of service firms are at full capacity - a very good number of you! Something that did concern me slightly was the recognition that some of you are finding it difficult to hire the right people. I appreciate that some may have been holding back investments in their business because of the uncertainty around Brexit, but now it appears that even those who do want to commit may face headwinds. However, the confidence levels that have been reported, for me, are probably the most important factor in continuing to drive our economic success and they remain at very encouraging highs. Bravo Staffordshire, keep up the hard work!

A group of friends with a passion for skateboarding, along with the technical skills required to build a park, got together and opened Stoke-onTrent’s first indoor skatepark. Led by mother and daughter, Nita and Jess Siegertsz, their team redeveloped an unused warehouse and turned it into a facility for skateboarders, bladers, BMX and scooter riders. The team behind Unit 1 Park Works had the design and construction skills, along with the passion and commitment required to make the business a success. Investing in connectivity Internet Central (IC), based at Keele Science Park, is one of the UK’s first ISPs and is part of one of Staffordshire’s oldest companies, Goodwin PLC. IC has spent the last two years investing in local infrastructure and technology in order to help promote the area as a connectivity hub for the whole of the UK. This has helped the local economy in many ways because the money saved by using IC has been invested in other areas of the business. The services that IC offer range from dedicated Ethernet connectivity, to their very own hosted phone system which is having an upgrade that is due for release very soon. Companies are becoming completely reliant on the Internet for operations such as running their account system and having a fully integrated CRM and telephony system. Business critical connectivity is now more cost effective for you as a business. Many of the local IT support companies recommend

IC to their customers because they understand how important having a local ISP is. This means that they are easily accessible either over the phone or in person. Ceramic gin bottles are just the tipple Wade Ceramics Limited has partnered with fellow Staffordshire manufacturer, Nelson's Gin Distillery and Gin School, to produce 10,000 white ceramic gin bottles. The initial order will be spread over three varieties, Rhubarb and Custard Gin, London Gin and Navy Strength – with the premium packaging complementing the gins on offer. The gin is crafted by using 27 of the finest botanicals sourced from around the globe, together with fresh Staffordshire water. The duo is delighted with their collaboration, which is helping to generate wealth in the region. However, certain challenges had to be overcome during the production process. The bespoke height of the bottles meant that the team at Wade was unable to fire them using standard kilns. Instead, an innovative approach was required, and a taller, intermittent kiln was used for bisque and glazing. Paul Farmer, Managing Director at Wade Ceramics, said: "As a producer of high-quality ceramics, Wade is delighted to be teaming up with Nelson’s Gin – a local a premium distiller. Together we are proud to act as ambassadors for Stoke by adding to our region’s unique manufacturing history and the bid to be Capital of Culture in 2021.” Greg Kimber, Director at Nelson's Gin Distillery and Gin School, said: “We pride ourselves on being different from others and want to ensure that we stand out from the competition. Using Wade was an obvious choice for us, as the business is local. We like to support other Staffordshire businesses and are proud to be established in this county. “We also hope that once the bottle is empty, people will start to collect them as ornaments or maybe turn them into vases etc. for their home, rather than throwing them away.”

38 CITY OF CULTURE BID THE MAGAZINE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS, MOVERS & SHAKERS

A sky banner heralds the submission of Stoke-on-Trent's UK City of Culture bid

City of culture bid: an update from Paul Williams, seconded from Staffordshire University to support the bid Stoke-on-Trent’s 30-page initial bid, which has been developed over the past year and a half, was submitted to the Department of Media, Culture and Sport on Friday 28 April. The submission of the bid was marked by a banner that was flown around the city and a free celebratory performance called 'There's Something In The Water, Duck' by Avanti Display in Albion Square, Hanley. The bid document sets out why our city should be crowned as the UK City of Culture in 2021. We expect to hear by early July whether we have made the shortlist to host what is now recognised as a prestigious national prize.

From a spectacular opening event, we will deliver hundreds of great art and mass participation events and festivals, public art projects, installations, trails and performances.

The bidding guidance required us to set out our own vision for Stokeon-Trent and the transformational changes that we will seek to deliver. In developing our city-wide bid, we were keen to ensure that the cultural programme should be diverse, inclusive and representative of the city’s heritage, as well as being informed by all communities. Our overarching vision, ‘Together we make the city’, acknowledges that Stoke-on-Trent is uniquely polycentric – six distinct towns, yet one city. It is also a reflection upon the fact that we are a city that has exported our culture across the globe. The manufacturing history of Stokeon-Trent would be a key focus for us as UK City of Culture, as culture and creativity have always been a catalyst for economic growth here. As UK City of Culture, Stoke-on-Trent will be seeking to rediscover, in a new century and in new ways, the lessons and experiences of its past. For these reasons, the bid articulates a new cultural identity for the city, where the guiding principles of 'togetherness' and 'making' will build on our historical foundations. Clay and coal will be used as a platform to re-imagine and fashion the city as a destination

for future makers, artists, designers and digital creatives. Creativity and innovation will once again become our cultural hallmarks. In so doing, UK City of Culture will deliver a number of changes to help transform Stoke-on-Trent in the following areas:

• Economy – our current improvement and progress will be massively accelerated, especially in ceramics and the creative industries • Changing the Story of Stoke – improving our image and attracting visitors, businesses and residents

• Participation and Engagement in Arts & Culture – more people going to more cultural events and activities

• Educational Achievement, Skills and Employability – raising local

confidence and aspirations to achieve more • Skilled Workforce – retaining and attracting those with high-level skills to a creative city • Increased Tourism - more visitors to our fabulous museums and galleries

• Improved Health & Wellbeing –

addressing issues including obesity & anxiety

CITY OF CULTURE BID 39 THE MAGAZINE FOR BUSINESS LEADERS, MOVERS & SHAKERS

Throughout the bid development, civic leaders, cultural organisations, artists, businesses, communities and residents have come together to shape a programme of events which showcase, not only ceramics, but also theatre and dance, film and video, music and festivals. In rising to the creative challenge, the entire city will be the stage for our worldclass cultural programme. We will open the doors to our award-winning and respected theatres, museums, galleries and other venues. At the same time, we will bring unused and redundant buildings and public spaces to life. In terms of the artistic programme, we have focused on curating a truly international programme of worldclass, imported and home-grown activities centring around four coherent themes:

• Identity – where we will seek to challenge external and internal perceptions of the city

• Making – where we will test, reflect on and celebrate the joy of making in all its guises • Landscape – acknowledging that we

are a city built on clay and coal, but also a city of urban green spaces, parks, canals and waterways

• Alchemy – a place of great

innovation and experimentation From a spectacular opening event, we will deliver hundreds of great art and mass participation events and festivals, public art projects, installations, trails and performances. These will not only transform Stokeon-Trent and the wider region but also celebrate and showcase the diverse creativity of our people and communities. In anticipation of making the shortlist, the bid team is continuing to engage

across the city, in particular with the business community in advance of submitting a full and final bid by the end of September. A final decision on which city will follow Hull as the UK’s designated City of Culture will be made by the end of the year.

JCB machines star in feature film

JCB takes a bow in cult film A fleet of more than 20 JCB machines has played a starring role in a cult film following the biggest product placement project in the company’s history. Skid steers loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers and JS excavators were supplied to 20th Century Fox for the making of the new Alien Covenant film. They star alongside Michael Fassbender and Katherine Waterston wrapped in stunning gold – the idea of British film director and producer Ridley Scott – to give them a futuristic

look. The equipment is used in the so-called ‘terraforming bay’, the area which alters the environment to make it capable of supporting terrestrial life. Michael Plummer, Managing Director for JCB Worldwide, said: “This is the biggest product placement exercise in JCB’s history and involved more than £1 million worth of machines. Ridley Scott’s idea to wrap the machines in gold delivered a stunning result and is certainly an eye-catching addition to a film which will be seen by millions of people around the world.”

Extended deadline for Wedgwood vase appeal A campaign to keep one of the rarest pieces of Wedgwood pottery in Stoke-onTrent has been given a major boost after receiving a £90,000 grant. The money from Art Fund, the national charity for art, means that the original deadline has been extended until Friday 14 July 2017. Master Potter, Josiah Wedgwood, created the iconic vase on the opening day of his factory in 1769. It had been on loan to the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery until it was withdrawn by its owner and sold at

auction to an overseas buyer last year. The vase is one of only four made by Wedgwood that survives from that first day of production at his Etruria Factory. Councillor Terry Follows, the City Council’s cabinet member for Greener City, Development and Leisure, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news. The fundraising appeal has received many wonderful and generous donations which demonstrates how people feel about the need to keep the vase in Stoke-on-Trent."

Absence Management Tools: The Return to Work Interview Even with all of the working rights people now enjoy, including the flexibile working options available, there are still employees who call in “sick” to have a day off work - often on a Monday or Friday to provide a long weekend. These days off cost employers thousands in cover and lost productivity. The return to work interview is a useful tool in fighting back against these absences. ACAS recommends a return to work interview is carried out after each absence. If an employee has to meet with management to explain their illness and record an absence, they are much more likely to think twice.

Top tips: • The return to work interview doesn’t have to be very formal. You could even go for coffee to complete the form. • It is a welcome back meeting too, let them know of any changes they’ve missed. • You should go somewhere away from other staff, the person may open up about matters more if they cannot be overheard. • Check they are feeling better and able to perform their role safely. • Ask if there are any issues at work which caused the absence. • Record the absence so that persistent time off is on file.

Sophie Attwood, Managing Director of Impress PR Sophie Attwood is the Managing Director of Impress PR, a PR company with a fresh approach and the desire to unearth some of the UK’s hidden gems through marketing and media relations. Based in Stafford, Sophie has an eye for a great story and a passion for people. What made you set up your own business? I set up my business in September 2016, having headed up the PR department at Steelite International. I think that Staffordshire is completely underrated and wanted to help businesses in our county to shout about their success. What is a typical day like for you? I work with industries ranging from internet service providers and car manufacturers through to fashion brands and the aesthetics industry – so there is never a day that’s the same. That’s why I love it! It can range from spending a morning filming with the BBC, to an afternoon writing press releases, award-entries and speeches. How do you stand out from the crowd? I genuinely believe that to stand out from the crowd you have to remain true to yourself. Our business model is very different to a typical PR agency, meaning that we can offer great PR opportunities for budgets of any size. We also offer the option of in-house support and 24/7 crisis management. What is your 12-month plan? My plan is to continue to invest and grow the business to ensure that our clients have access to all of

Sophie Attwood, Managing Director of Impress PR

their communication needs, whilst maintaining the personal touch, which I think can get lost with a lot of the larger agencies. Do you have any hidden talents? I love to play the piano and have played since I was a little girl. From classical to well-known songs, it’s the perfect way to unwind after a busy day. What is the best advice that you’ve been given? The best advice that I’ve ever been given comes from my Dad who set up a successful quantity surveying company in 2002. He said to me to ‘just go for it’. It seems ridiculously simple but it applies to everything. Have an idea for a client? Just go for it. Worried about pitching to a client against large, well-established agencies? Just go for it.
