A Message From Freeholder John C. Bartlett, Jr. n behalf of the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I welcome you to the Winter 2009/2010 issue of Out & About Ocean County, A Free Newsguide to Arts & Heritage Events.
On December 27th at 2:00 pm, Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation will conduct the annual ceremony commemorating the 227th anniversary of what some historians consider the last documented land engagement of the American War of Independence at Cedar Bridge Tavern at 200 Old Halfway Road, Barnegat, New Jersey.
The 18th century tavern was purchased by Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders on December 27, 2007 and will eventually be part of the Ocean County Park system. We have begun the long process of placing the historic structure on the New Jersey and National registers of historic places.
The Culture and Heritage Commission is in the midst of their annual arts and history grant award cycle. Over the years, more than $1.3 million has been distributed to arts and history groups in Ocean County to serve our residents and guests. During this round, the Commission has recommended $62,000 in grants to Ocean County arts organizations and $11,354 to 0cean County history organizations.
In an ongoing effort to help define the needs, resources, and aspirations for the arts, culture and history of Ocean County, the Commission has begun a comprehensive update of the Ocean County Cultural Plan. After an extensive public bid process, the commission has recommended the selection of ArtsMarket to provide technical assistance for this program that will be conducted during the coming year. I encourage you to become part of this process as either an individual or a member of an Ocean County non-profit organization.
Especially during these challenging economic times, we are deeply grateful for the cost effective efforts of more than 100 non-profit Ocean County organization serving our year round residents and summer guests.
I hope you are able to get out and enjoy the arts and history offerings for the winter of 2009/2010. I wish each and every one of you and your families a happy and blessed holiday season..
