A retrospective review of disease diagnoses in caribou from Canada Trent K. Abstract: W e c o m p i l e d reports o n 418 caribou specimens submitted to veterinary diagnostic laboratories and wildlife agencies f r o m across Canada. T h e earliest record was f r o m 1969; however, the majority were f r o m 1987 to the present. M o s t submissions were tissues from huntershot animals. Brucella suis and Brucella sp. (untyped) were the most c o m m o n bacterial pathogens isolated, accounting for 69 and 16 cases respectively. Parasitic conditions were also c o m m o n . Besnoitiosis was diagnosed i n 40 cases from various locations i n the N o r t h w e s t Territories, northern British C o l u m b i a , Alberta, Saskatchewan and M a n i t o b a . Cysticercosis was diagnosed i n 49 cases. Fibropapillomas, likely o f viral origin, were present i n 5 cases. Individual cases o f chondrosarcoma, pulmonary carcinoma and renal adenoma were also reported. Deficiencies i n data collection were also noted; i n 43% o f cases the age o f animal was not reported and i n 42% o f submissions the sex o f the animal was not indicated. T h e Canadian Cooperative W i l d l i f e H e a l t h Centre has established a central repository for disease diagnostic reports w h i c h w i l l be useful i n identifying disease problems and geographic occurrence o f disease i n caribou. A standardized reporting format w h i c h includes accurate information o n location, age, and sex o f animal is required.

Abstract: W e estimated the relationship between daily weight gain o f caribou calves and their proportional use o f 5 habitats o n the A r c t i c N a t i o n a l W i l d l i f e Refuge coastal plain during 1992 and 1993. Calves (1992, n=80; 1993, n=72) were captured, w e i g h e d and equipped w i t h radio-collars w h e n approximately 1 day o l d . These calves were recaptured w i t h netguns and reweighed at approximate ages o f 3 weeks (1992, n=62; 1993, n=61), and 6 weeks (1992, n=12; 1993, n=15). P r o p o r t i o n a l habitat use between weighings was estimated from aerial relocations o f the collared calves. D a i l y gain was higher d u r i n g the first 3 week p e r i o d (1992, x = 0.380 k g / D , S E = 0.051; 1993, x = 0.441 k g / D , S E = 0.064) than d u r i n g the second 3 week p e r i o d (1992, x = 0.344 k g / D , S E = 0.056; 1993, x = 0.193 k g / D , S E = 0.091) i n each year. D a i l y gain i n each 3 week period differed between years. Habitat use differed between the first and second 3 week periods and between years. W e i g h t gain was associated w i t h proportional habitat use i n each 3 week p e r i o d and i n each year, but the relationships between daily gain and habitat use varied between the t w o 3 week periods and between years. Positive, neutral, or negative relationships between daily gain and proportional habitat use may be used to rank habitats as having high, m e d i u m , or o w value, respectively. O u r results suggest that the value o f a habitat can change w i t h i n and between years.
