Aboriginal identity population
Vol. 1, No. 9, July 2013
Highlights • The Aboriginal identity population in Ontario was 301,450 in 2011. • Ontario has the largest Aboriginal population of any province or territory in Canada and more than one-half live in non-metro census divisions. • Three non-metro census divisions (Manitoulin, Kenora and Rainy River) have more than 20% of their population with an Aboriginal identity and 10 census divisions have more than 6%. Why look at the Aboriginal identity population? The Aboriginal population is growing faster than the rest of the Canadian population due to higher birth rates. An increasing share of new entrants to Canada’s workforce will be Aboriginal in the future. Findings In 2011, 1.4 million Canadians had an Aboriginal identity1. Ontario is the province or territory with the most Aboriginals in Canada with 301,450 (Table 1). British Columbia was the next largest jurisdiction with 232,400 individuals with an Aboriginal identity. Over one-half of Ontario’s Aboriginals (117,680 individuals) reside in non-metro census divisions (CDs). Within non-metro CDs, Aboriginals represent 6% of the population. However, there are non-metro CDs, predominantly in the north, where more 10% of the population is Aboriginal (Manitoulin with 41%, Kenora with 36%, Rainy 1
The Aboriginal identity is derived from data collected in three questions on the 2011 National Household Survey: Aboriginal group (Question 18); Registered or Treaty Indian status (Question 20) and Membership in a First Nation or Indian band (Question 21). In Question 18, respondents could respond 'Yes, First Nations (North American Indian),' 'Yes, Métis,' 'Yes, Inuk (Inuit)' or 'No, not an Aboriginal person' by checking off the appropriate mark-in circle. In Question 20, respondents could respond 'No' or 'Yes, Status Indian (Registered or Treaty).' In Question 21, respondents could respond 'No' or 'Yes, member of a First Nation/Indian band'. River with 22%, Sudbury with 16%, Cochrane with 13%, Algoma with 12% and Nipissing with 11%). One partially-non-metro CD has 12% of its population being Aboriginal (Thunder Bay). In most CDs, about 2/3 of Aboriginals have a First Nations (North American Indian) single identity and another 1/3 have a Métis single identity. Summary The intensity of the Aboriginal population in northern non-metro census divisions combined with their higher birth rate indicates that an increasing share of workforce entrants over the next few years will have an Aboriginal identity.
