The Utility of Postcranial Nonmetric Traits in Ancestry Analysis Micayla Spiros, MSc*, Institute of Archaeology, University College London, 31-34 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PY, United Kingdom; Carolyn Rando, PhD, Institute of Archaeology, University College London, 31-34 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PY, United Kingdom
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to create a novel approach to analyzing postcranial nonmetric traits and to view how these variations may be used to estimate the ancestry of individuals in a forensic context. This project developed a visual method for scoring a suite of postcranial nonmetric traits and compared the traits between two ancestral groups. Addressing a large gap in forensic anthropological literature regarding the usage of postcranial nonmetric traits, this project will contribute to future approaches to ancestry estimation.
INTRODUCTION Nonmetric traits are morphological changes in the skeleton with underlying genetic causation. Because these traits are inherently genetic, there should be variability between global populations. Using advanced statistical methods, cranial nonmetric traits have been successful in quantifying the difference between ancestral groups. 1,2,3,4 However, postcranial nonmetric traits, while often recorded, have not been explored for their utility as ancestral group identifiers. This project aims to rectify this gap in the literature and establish whether there is any potential in using postcranial traits for ancestry estimation.
