Abstract A new species of the genus Storchia, S. elhamae sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on females collected from grass litters in Mahabad countryside, western Azerbaijan province, Iran. A key to all known species of the world is provided. Key words: Mite, predatory mites, tree, stored product, specimen

Introduction The genus Storchia is one of the smallest genera of the family Stigmaeidae. They live in soil, litter, moss, tree bark, house dust and stored products (Fan & Yan, 1997; Miranda et. al. 2002; Doğan & Ayyıldız, 2003; Noei et al. 2007; Palyvos et al. 2008; Safasadti & Khanjani, 2010). Up to present, nine species of the genus was reported, namely: S. robustus (Berlese, 1885); S. hendersonae Fan & Zhang, 2005; S. shanghaiensis (Liang & Hu, 1988); S. annae Fan & Li, 1993; S. cuneata Fan & Yan, 1997; S. pacifica (Summers, 1964); S. ardabiliensis Safasadati & Khanjani, 2010; S. yazdaniani Bagheri et al. 2011; S. mehrvari Bagheri et al. 2012. According to the references one third of all known species were recorded from Iran. In this paper the tenth species of the genus is presented.

Materials and methods Type materials of were collected from grass litter in Mahabad vicinity (36° 51′ 12′′ N, 45° 17′ 13′′ E, 1433 a.s.l.), west Azerbaijan province and were extracted by using a Berlese funnel. The collected mites were mounted directly in Hoyer’s medium on glass slides and then dried in an oven at 50°C for 10 days. The specimen was examined under an Olympus BX51 phase contrast microscope. Drawings were made with a camera Lucida. The terminology and setal notations used in the description of the new species follow that of Lindquist (1985). All measurements are given in micrometers (µm).

Female members of the genus Storchia can easily be distinguished by following characters: Prodorsal shield long, smooth or reticulated, bearing two pairs of setae (v1, v2), setae sc1 and sc2 on platelets and eyes absent; opisthosomal area striated longitudinally, with six pairs of setae (c1, d1, d2, e1, e2, f1); with or without intercalary shields, suranal shield divided in midline, with two or three pairs of setae (h1, h2, h3), setae h3 in ventral position; humeral shield vestigial or absent, bearing setae c2. Endocoxal shields absent. Setal formulae of leg segments as follows: coxae 2, 2, 2, 1/2; trochanters 1, 1, 1/2, 1; femora 4, 4, 3, 2/3; genua 3/4/5+1κ, 3/4+0/1κ, 1/2/3, 1/2/3; tibiae 5+1φ/2φp, 5+1φp, 5+1φp, 5+1φp; tarsi 12/13/14+1ω, 8/9/10+1ω, 6/7/8+1ω, 6/7/8+1ω (Fan & Yan, 1997; Khanjani & Ueckermann, 2002; Doğan & Ayyildiz, 2003; Fan & Zhang, 2005). Storchia elhamae sp. nov. (Figs. 1– 9) Diagnosis—No evidence of suranal shield. Trochanter III with one seta, coxa IV with two setae, genua I– II with 4+1κ– 4 setae, genital valves with two pairs of setae, prodorsal shield reticulated, length of setae c1 14, v2 40, 3a 43. FEMALE (n=2). Color in life red. Idiosoma oval. Length of body 580–585 (including gnathosoma) and length of body (excluding gnathosoma) 441–445 long; width 270; length of leg I 200–207; leg II 168–170; leg III 162 –164, leg IV 187–195. Dorsum (Figs. 1–4)—Prodorsal shield oblong in shape and reticulated with two pairs of setae (v1, v2) (Fig. 1); opisthosoma covered with longitudinal striations, with six pairs of setae (c1, d1, d2, e1, e2, f1) and no evident of suranal shield and with two pairs of suranal setae (h1, h2) on the striated area. Setae c2 situated on lateral margin. Setae v2 2.5 times longer than setae v1; dorsal setae finely ciliated (Figs. 2, 3, 4); lengths of dorsal setae: v1 14–16, v2 37– 40, sc1 15–17, sc2 20–22, c1 352

Venter (Fig. 7)—Ventral cuticle transversely striate medially between coxisternal II–III; coxae I–II and III–IV surrounded by longitudinal striae (Fig. 7). Length of setae 1a 30–32, 1b 35–36, 1c 20–22, 2b 65–67, 2c 27–30, 3a 43–45, 3b 25–27, 3c 19–21, 4a 27–29, 4b 17–18 and 4c 20–22. Aggenital setae (ag 1– 4) longer than pseudanal setae (ps1– 3); ag3 almost 2.3 times longer than ag4; measurements of setae: setae ag1 26–28, ag2 32–34, ag3 60–65, ag4 26–28, g1 19–21, g2 18–20, ps1 16–19, ps2 14–16, ps3 15–17. Distances: ag1– ag1 32–34, ag2– ag2 48–50, ag3– ag3 56–58. Gnathosoma (Figs. 5– 6)—Subcapitulum with two pairs of smooth setae, m twice as long as n, length of seta m 28–30 and n 55–59, two pairs of adoral setae, or1 10–12, or2 10–11; distances: or1– or1 10–11, or2– or2 15–16, m– m 31–34, n–n 35–37, or1– m 23–26, m–n 15–16 (Fig. 5). Chelicerae free 78–85 long, movable digits 36-38 (Fig. 6). Palpi five segmented, palp tarsus with two simple setae + one solenidion (ω) + two terminal and two sub terminal eupathidia; tibia with three simple setae + one claw 15 long, palp genu with two setae and palp femur with three setae (Fig. 5). Legs (Figs. 6– 9)—Setal formulae of leg segments as follows: coxae 2– 2–2–2; trochanters 1– 1–1–1; femora 4–4–3–2, genua 4+1κ–4–2–2; tibiae 61φρ–5+1φρ–5+1φρ–5+1φρ; tarsi 13+1ω– 9+1ω–7+1ω–7+1ω. Length of solenidia: I ω 16–18, II ω 15–16, III ω 5-6, IV ω 6. Discussion—Storchia elhamae sp. nov. resembles S. hendersonae Fan & Zhang (2005) in having the same leg chaetotaxy, however differs from that in: 1. prodorsal shield reticulated in the former opposed to smooth in the latter; 2. lengths of setae v1 16, v2 40, sc2 22, c1 14, d1 18, d2 20, e1 18, e2 21, f 17, h3 18, 3a 43 vs. v1 24, v2 56, sc2 37, c1 28, d1 26, d2 31, e1 26, e2 31, f 30, h3 25, 3a 68. The new species also resembles S. mehrvari Bagheri & Ghelealivand, 2012 in having the same prodorsal pattern and setal formulae of tibiae, and tarsi, however, it differs from the latter in: 1. Trochanter III with 1 seta instead of 2, 2. setae h1-2 on striated area versus on the smooth shield, 3. ventral seta 3a shorter than the later, 4. with 2 pairs of genital setae instead of 4 pairs. Etymology—This species is named in honor Mrs. Elham Jafarpour, wife of senior author. Material examined—Holotype female, 9 December, 2012 was collected from soil covered with grass, Mahabad vicinity, western Azerbaijan province (36° 51′ 12′′ N, 45° 17′ 13′′ E, 1433 a.s.l.), one paratype female as the same data of holotype. The holotype female is preserved as slide mounted specimen and deposited in the Collection of Acarology Laboratory, University of Bu-Ali Sina, Hamadan, Iran and one female paratype will be deposited in the mite Section of National Collection of Arachnida, Plant Protection Research Institute, Pretoria, South Africa.
