Sizing and Selection of Equipment There are many factors contributing to the need for greenhouse cooling and ventilation equipment. The primary source of heat in a greenhouse is solar radiation. To reduce greenhouse temperatures, air removal is required and its rate of removal is a function of the floor area. A simplified method for sizing and selecting equipment for greenhouse temperature control is included in this brochure. For more detailed information, see Acme catalog C7.

SELECTING FAN-JET:

DO NOT EXCEED THE CAPACITY OF THE FAN-JET WITH EXHAUST.

From charts 1 and 1A, locate the greenhouse size using the “equivalent width” from the formula below and the actual length of the greenhouse.

Either increase the size of the Fan-Jet or reduce exhaust below the Fan-Jet CFM rating.

ACTUAL WIDTH x Fe x Fl x Fw = (EQUIVALENT WIDTH)

Summer Ventilation and Cooling: Approximately 8 CFM per square foot of floor area is required for maximum ventilation and cooling.

DO NOT EXCEED 30’ IN ACTUAL HOUSE WIDTH WITH ONE FAN-JET. Select the Fan-Jet(s) within the range shown. If the Fan-Jet is to be used for distributing heat, include the heat accessory kit to go with the Fan-Jet. Select the proper model of tubing according to the length of the greenhouse. Improper tube punching will not provide uniform air distribution.

LENGTH X WIDTH x 8 x Fe x Fl x Ft = SUMMER CFM. If fans and pads are less than 100 feet apart, adjustments must be made for air velocity. LENGTH X WIDTH x 8 x Fv = CFM FOR SUMMER.

SELECTING EXHAUST FANS:

Select the exhaust fans to provide the higher of either CFM for conditions or CFM for velocity.

Winter Ventilation: (used in conjunction with Fan-Jet) Between 11/2 and 2 CFM per square foot of floor area is required for winter ventilation. LENGTH X WIDTH x 2 x Fe x Fl x Fw = WINTER CFM

2

SELECTING KOOL-CEL SIZE:

CONTROLS

Kool-Cel is most efficient with air velocity of 250 fpm. Therefore, for maximum efficiency add the total exhaust selected and divide by 250 to get the square feet of pad required. Divide the square feet of pad by the available length of run to get the height of Kool-Cel required. Round off to the nearest foot.

Because of non-resident management of greenhouse operations today, automatic controls become a necessity. If simple one or two step heating or cooling is required, thermostats will satisfactorily operate the equipment. But to conserve energy, staging equipment is recommended to use minimum equipment while achieving desired temperatures.

The pads are 4” x 12” x 24”, 36”, 48”, 60” & 72”. Using the tall pad support, they may be stacked to provide 60”, 72”, 84”, and 96” high pads, The number of Kool-Cel pads required is equal to the length of run.

The ACC-I has zero, one, two, or three stages of heat, one stage of circulation and four, five, six, or seven cooling/ventilation stages. The Grotron II has two stages of heat, one for circulation and five stages of cooling/ventilation. More features are a part of the Grotron II system and are detailed on Page 19 and in Brochure C46.

Select the distribution system that matches the length of run up to 100’. (50’ in PDR systems.) Select the water pump according to the length of the distribution system. Use #15 pump for systems up to 40’, #30 up to 70’, and #60 up to 100’.

Both Grotron II and ACC-I are low voltage (24 volts) controllers and require 24 volt control relays. Select one PB90ER24-1 relay for each piece of equipment and one PB90ER24-1 and PB90ER24-2 relay for each two speed or two directional motor. (Inlet shutters may be grouped and operated with one relay.)

SELECTING INLET SIZES:

Winter Ventilation: The inlet shutter sizes for Fan-Jet systems are listed with the Fan-Jets on Page 10. Summer Ventilation and Cooling: The inlet area for Kool-Cel pads should be continuous and at least 2/3 of the pad height. In no case should the velocity of air inlet for summer cooling or ventilation exceed 400 fpm. Divide total CFM by 400 to get square feet of inlet required. Select inlet shutters using the opening area shown on the inlet shutter chart. (Page 9).

Typical Example:

A 25’ x 100’ greenhouse located in an area with less than 1000 feet elevation and 5000 f.c. of light. This example is based on 15 degree winter inside temperature above outside temperature and 7 degree rise from pad to fan in summer. Air flow will be end to end and, therefore, fan to pad distance is 100’.

RECOMMENDED SPACING

12” Tubing every 10 ft. 18” Tubing every 10 ft. 24” Tubing every 8 ft. 30” Tubing every 6 ft.

Wire support kits, available in 50’, 100’, 150’, 200’ and 300’ lengths, include six strand 10 gauge wire, turnbuckle and 2 securing clips.

* CAUTION! This tubing, for use in greenhouses, does not contain fire retardants. Due care should be taken during installation and operation to keep away from open flame.

* Maximum tube length for Fresh Air Convection Tube System. ** Maximum tube length for Fan-Jet with Heat Kit. + When 12” tubing is used for Perimeter Heating the Tube Model is prefixed by the letter P.

Acme Heat Kits allow use of gas fired, electric, steam or hot water unit heaters without outside air passing through the heat exchanger. When used with Fan-Jet, Heat Kits keep coils and elements out of the air flow route, thus saving energy. Each kit consists of two baffle plates with air scoops attached horizontally to the top and bottom of the Fan-Jet Unit and to the framed opening of the motorized inlet shutter. Kits also come with a Fan-Jet motor shield to prevent heat build-up. A center baffle accessory is included for use when opposing heaters trigger separately, preventing blow-through of hot air and possible motor damage.

HEAT KITS

for overhead heating

*The unit heater louvers should be at the same elevation as the Fan-Jet inlet opening and spaced a proper distance from it, with the axis of the unit heater discharge opening directed toward the Fan-Jet inlet opening. If the heater must be positioned below the level of the Fan-Jet inlet opening to maintain the proper spacing, the louvers should be adjusted to direct the heated air upward toward the top of the inlet opening.

CAUTION! To avoid combustion malfunctions when two heaters are used with one Fan-Jet; the minimum heater distance from Fan-Jet opening must be maintained, both heaters must operate simultaneously unless center baffle is used, and the discharge louvers must be directed toward the top of the Fan-Jet opening.

If the Fan-Jet end of the building is colder than the remainder of the house, this condition usually can be corrected by adjusting one or two of the lower louvers of the heaters to a downward position to divert part of the heated air to the end wall area.

ACME’S KOOL-CEL EVAPORATIVE COOLING PAD SYSTEM

A PROVEN PERFORMER Kool-Cel Pads Kool-Cel pads are cellulose cooling cells 4” and 6” deep, 12” wide and available in 12” increments from 24” to 72” tall with two pieces of 4” combined to make 84” and 96” tall pads. The cooling cells are made from a specially formulated cellulose paper impregnated with insoluble anti-rot salts. It is designed with an exclusive cross-fluted configuration which induces highly turbulent mixing inside the pad between the water and the air, and contributes to the evaporative efficiency. The cross-fluted design makes Kool-Cel a strong self-supporting pad with high evaporative efficiency and low pressure drop (resistance to air flow). A face velocity of 250 feet per minute for 4” and 400 feet per minute for 6” is recommended for the most economical cost and operation of the Kool-Cel system.

Kool-Cel on Greenhouse

Sizing Kool-Cel Pad

Determine Total Summer Cooling Required in CFM, then divide by velocity to obtain pad area in square feet. The pad area divided by the length will determine the height in feet.

Total Pad area, sq.ft.=

Total Summer Cooling Required (CFM) ___________________ Velocity (250-4” 400-6”) Kool-Cel and Celdek

4” KOOL-CEL PAD The 4” Kool-Cel pad is constructed with air flow at equal 45° angles which allows air flow to enter from either side of the pad.

6” CELDEK PAD The 6” Celdek pad contains flutes organized in two angles, one with steep pitch and the other less pitched. The air must enter the pad from the side with the steep pitch.

MI-T-Edg ®

Optional coating on one or both sides of the pads reduces algae growth and enables easy pad cleaning and maintenance. MI-T-Edg is a registered trademark of Munters Corporation.

The pumps should be sized to provide gallon per minute for 4” and /4 gallon per minute for 6” of flow per linear foot of pad to insure adequate wetting.

PAD CARE

The sump tank cover and tank fittings are furnished by others and should be sized to provide ¾ gallon per square foot of 4” pad area and 1 gallon per square foot of 6” pad area. 2. Cover the sump to avoid exposure to sunlight and airborne particles, and to keep animals from drinking it.

Kool-Cel pads are very durable and long lasting. To maximize the life of your pads and keep the efficiency of the original installation, correct any conditions that may be detrimental to the pad.

3. Keep the fans running after the pump is shut off to dry the pads, thus killing the algae spores left on the pad.

A Ph of recirculating water (from sump) must be maintained between 6 and 9 (7 is pure water). If these limits are exceeded, the stiffening agents in the pad will leach out and destroy the pad. B. Hard water resulting in Calcium Carbonate deposits on the pad is not harmful, but should be kept within limits.

4. Isolate the water make-up system from any other system. 5. Pads should be shaded from direct sunlight. E. If airborne dust and bugs tend to clog the airflow passages, proper operation of the system will normally wash away the clogging.

C. Sodium Chloride (salt water) concentrate above 50,000 ppm (approx.) will deposit salt on the pad and reduce air flow. Keep salt concentrates below 50,000 ppm in recirculating water and below 40,000 ppm in make-up water.

F. When Kool-Cel is installed within reach of poultry or livestock, it should be guarded.

D. Algae will grow on any surface that is wet and exposed to sunlight. To help prevent algae build up, follow these tips. 1.

The plumbing package is designed for use with all the pumps for the Kool-Cel systems and includes the necessary plumbing fittings and valve to complete the installation from the sump to the distributor and also contains the water strainer and float valve.

G. Bleed-Off - Since the water is continuously evaporating and being replaced by fresh water, the salts and minerals are left behind in the re-circulating water. To reduce the buildup of deposits and scale, a bleed off for the recirculating water is provided.

Do not draw make-up water from an open pond. Use well water or chlorinated water from city systems.

Rugged PVC construction is rust proof, lightweight and easy to install Available in 5’ sections Unique design requires less water Entire system easily removed from the building and stored during cooler months

Pads are easily installed in existing 2” systems with little or no modifications. Available in 34’ rolls and a variety of widths or in preassembled 12 gauge coated wire cages. Wire cage system eliminates the need for a middle stringer or middle support system in original installations. Unique, rigid blown polyester fiber construction is durable, lightweight and unaffected by soft water or chlorine. Easily cleaned and maintained without removing the pads from the system. Made from by-products of the oil refining process, the unique spun polyester pad material is biodegradable and environmentally sound. AquaCel Plus is a bonded plastic fiber pad that is coated with an absorbent plastic cellular foam. It is unaffected by continuous exposure to moisture, disinfectants, chlorine, traditional water treatment chemicals, or water pH. Soft water or water softeners will enhance AquaCel cooling performance.

WATER FLOW RATE

AquaCel Plus requires 1/4 to 2/5 gallons per minute per lineal foot of pad to operate at peak performance (i.e., a 100 foot long cooling system would require between 25 to 38 GPM of water) depending on the geographic location and current environmental conditions.

Note: When properly wetted you should not see water “running down” the pad like a waterfall. In fact, the pad should appear somewhat dry, but when touched with the back of the hand it should feel like a sponge saturated with water.
