Centralized source for information, education where learning can take place anywhere, or anytime.

My experience ●

Google Classroom

Canvas by Instructure School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific ● Used in computer programming classes and a theoretical lecture class ●

Used both to deliver seat works, lectures, quizzes

Screen Capture of Canvas

School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

Administration ●

Both technologies can be used to keep track of students list. Enlisting to a subject can be done by giving students a code.

● School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

Both technologies have Google Integration (UAP accounts) Calendar support (Google Classroom)

Positives Easier communication with students in regards to official communication. ● Tagging of Posts and Announcements School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific (Google Classroom) ● Easier dissemination and discussion of technical topics. ● Easier groupings (Canvas) ● Attendance tracking (Canvas) ●

Challenges ●

Students are not reliable with enrolling.

If the process is not managed, students may end up creating duplicates School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific (Canvas). ●

Cleaning up student mistakes can be time consuming. Canvas integration with Google is not seamless.

Tracking and Reporting LMS can provide great transparency in the outcomes from built-in syllabus. School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific ●

Teachers can build up the repository of student scores. Students can gauge their progress.

Tracking and Reporting (Exams) ●

Google Classroom support through Google Forms Canvas can create custom quizzes

School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

Both allow posting of Online Assignments with deadlines.

Positives ●

Grades distribution is fast and easy.

Canvas allows you to upload answers and quickly check the students' work. School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific ●

Google Classroom has integration with many online apps. Can provide specific feedback to a student's submission.

Challenges ●

Difficulties due to internet accessibility.

Students can communicate online without the teacher knowing. School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific ● Grades in Canvas can cause confusion since Canvas has support for grades breakdown. ● Students who don't pay attention may miss requirements. ●

Timezone confusion with deadlines.

Tracking and Reporting (Groups) ●

In Canvas, students can organize amongst themselves Canvas gives them their own online portal to organize their work.

● School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

Faculty can view their students' portals.

Groupings on Canvas

School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

Challenges ●

Getting students to adopt the use of such portal from a usefulness standpoint.

School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

Students may have a difficult time adjusting their workflow to integrate the portal.

Tracking and Reporting (Outcomes) ●

Canvas allows setting up the Outcomes and the course syllabus

School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

However, this is double the effort when creating the syllabus with the appropriate format.

Centralized Source of Information Canvas – File upload for distribution of lectures, technical materials – Students and faculty can upload material for School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific discussion. ● Google Classroom via Google Drive (UAP account) – Announcements and posts can link to materials from Google Drive – Google Drive permissions are handled automatically. ● Both have mobile app support ●

Challenges ●

Students and faculty will need to adjust to the layouts and delivery method of a chosen LMS.

School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

If students are not encouraged to use the LMS, they may not know where to find information. ● Students may not be aware that a resource was available to them. ●

Challenge of adopting LMS ●

Requires internet access and computers in the class

Internet access can introduce unnecessary distractions ● Difficulty in managing student activities with their computers

School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific ●

Suggestions ●

Before adopting an LMS, understand the system and the methodology of the LMS

Guide students especially through School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific registration to your course. ●

When creating assignments, make sure to articulate clearly in class the administrative side such as deadlines. Know the limits and plan for the use of LMS.

Suggestions ●

Using LMS during class may have limited success

LMS use may likely be better outside the class. ● Distribute scores/feedback for assignments with digital deliverables

● School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

Other Suggestions ●

Using Turnitin for paper submissions Checking for plagiarism and proper citations

School of Sciences and Engineering, Information Science and Technology  University of Asia and the Pacific

Scoring papers and adding annotations
