TRANSCRIPTS AND CAPTIONS

Adding transcripts and captions to your YouTube videos UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS

There are two ways to get closed captions on your YouTube videos: 1. Uploading a transcript (.txt) file 2. Uploading a pre-made closed caption file Both methods have the same outcome but have different inputs. Which method you choose will depend on the clarity and length of the video, as well as the resources available to you. Learn more: go.osu.edu/youtubeccabout

TRANSCRIPT FILE

Make a plain text transcript file of the words spoken in the video as should be accurately as possible. YouTube will use speech recognition technology to match the written transcript with the video, which is why it is important that the transcript (.txt) file accurately portrays what is said in the video. Pauses three seconds, or longer, must be designated by a double line break in the text file. Learn more: go.osu.edu/youtubetranscript

CLOSED CAPTION FILE

The second method requires that you already have a closed caption file. You will need third party software to create your own closed captions. YouTube accepts a variety of closed caption files. You can see a complete list of supported filetypes on YouTube’s support page. Learn more: go.osu.edu/youtubeccformats
