Advanced Composite Material Applications in Structural Engineering: Advances and Challenges Amjad Aref, PhD. Professor, Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo, SUNY Structural applications of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have recently gained much attention in the civil engineering community due to their superior material properties (e.g., high specific stiffness, high specific strength, and high corrosion resistance). However, all composite structural systems can have high initial costs and specific shortcomings such as low stiffness and the existence of catastrophic failure modes, which need to be accounted for in design. To create a superior structural system that is affordable because it makes the best use of materials, a hybrid deck construction of FRP composites with concrete was investigated at University at Buffalo and will be examined in this seminar. Results from both the experiments and the finite element analysis will be demonstrated along with design procedures and simple methods of analysis.

Biographical Sketch: Dr. Aref is a professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB). He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997, and joined UB that year. He teaches and conducts research in structural engineering, mechanics, finite elements, computational mechanics, earthquake engineering, and blast and multi-physics problems Dr. Aref has published extensively in the area of structural engineering and mechanics. His articles have been published in many of the premier journals of his field, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Journals of Structural Engineering, Bridge Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, and the International Journal of Solids and Structures. He is a member of the ASCE, American Academy of Mechanics (AAM) and the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM). He currently serves as an Associate Editor of the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering.
