ADVANCED MACROECONOMICS (WINTER 2012-13, MASTER LEVEL) PROF. DR. XENIA MATSCHKE, PH.D. AND ILONA ABB, M.SC

Advanced Macroeconomics forms part of the module “Economics Basics (VWL Basis)”. In Advanced Macroeconomics, you are going to learn about economic growth processes and business cycles, the key issues in modern macroeconomics. Basic questions which we are going to address and try to answer are, e.g., • What causes sustained growth? • Do limits to economic growth exist? • Could, and if so, should governments influence the growth rate? • What causes business cycles? • Could, and if so, should governments mitigate or even prevent business cycles? Special emphasis is put on the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomics, thus linking Advanced Macroeconomics with the other lecture in the “Economics Basics (VWL Basis)” module, namely Advanced Microeconomics. This approach may be different from how you were taught macroeconomics at the undergraduate level, so be aware. The recommended reference text is Macroeconomics, 4th ed. by Stephen D. Williamson (ISBN10: 0-13-208845-2). The topics and corresponding textbook chapters at a glance are: 1. Introduction (Ch. 1-3) 2. A One-Period Model of the Macroeconomy (Ch. 4-5) 3. Economic Growth (Ch. 6-7) 4. Savings, Investment, and Government Deficits (Ch. 8-10) 5. Money and Business Cycles (Ch. 11-13) 6. If time permits, we will also discuss unemployment models (Ch. 17). A thorough knowledge of intermediate microeconomics is necessary in order to understand the theoretical models we are going to cover in class. Grades are based on a final exam. Class Time Lecture (Vorlesung): The course starts on December 10, 2012. Lectures take place Mo 8-10 in Room C22 and Tu 10-12 in Room C502.
