Preface Advances in materials processing The 6th International Conference on Advanced Materials Processing (ICAMP) took place in the beautiful city of Lijiang, China, on 19–23 July 2010, after an interval of two years. About 150 internationally renowned scientists from 12 countries attended the conference to share their experiences and expertise. The conference consisted of 18 symposia, 3 plenary talks, 11 keynote papers, 16 invited talks, 65 oral presentations and y40 poster presentations covering the state-of-the-art in all areas of materials science and processing technologies. Among the 40 poster presentations, five were recognised as best posters after discussion by the evaluation panel. After a vigorous post-conference reviewing process, a total of 44 papers have been selected for publication in this special issue of Materials Technology: Advanced Performance Materials. The selected papers cover a wide range of research topics, from simulation and modelling of materials processing and design, to processing of a wide range of materials to achieve the microstructures and key properties combinations required for specific functional, structural and biomaterials applications. Contributions falling in these categories can be grouped under the topics of: prediction and modelling of materials properties and processing;1–4 synthesis of nanostructured materials, nanotubes and nanorods;5–12 and biomaterials.13–16 The engineering of metallic materials for specific applications (traditional and advanced steels as well as advanced lightweight materials), by deformation, nanostructuring, amorphisation and chemical modification, is also addressed.17–26 Functional materials have attracted much attention in recent years because of their ability to respond to changes in mechanical, physical and chemical variables. Some contributions investigate the relationship between functionality, material chemistries and types of processing.27–44 The Organising Committee of ICAMP would like to express sincere thanks to the members of the International Advisory Committee for their invaluable contributions to the conference. The committee is also grateful for the generous sponsorship of the special issue by Werkstatt Asia Technologies Pte Ltd. A word of thanks goes to the Founding Editor, Dr Sam Froes, for facilitating the publication of the special issue, to the Editor, Professor Devesh Misra, and to the editorial staff of Materials Technology: Advanced Performance Materials for their assistance. Finally, our deep gratitude is directed to the National University of Singapore and Yunnan University, China, without whose support the conference would not have achieved the degree of success it did. We should point out that this is a ‘hybrid’ issue of the journal in which some material is published onlineonly. This format has been adopted for reasons of space only and should not be taken to indicate a difference in the status or peer review between the two sections. Y. F. Zhang, L. Lu and P. F.
