Summary: A simple and feasible method is described for analysing aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in a cheese matrix. The method involves immunoaffinity as a purification step followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with post-column derivatisation and fluorescence detection. One hundred and twenty eight samples of several types of hard cheese from five different European countries were acquired from supermarkets in Lisbon, Portugal. Eight samples (6.25%) contained levels of AFM1 at the maximum permissible level (0.05 µg/kg) while 120 (93.75%) were not contaminated (
