A
gilent Life Sciences and Chemical Analysis is a leading global provider of instrumentation, supplies, software and services to the life science and chemical analysis markets. With revenue of $2.2 billion, the group accounted for approximately 38% of Agilent’s $5.8 billion of total revenue in 2008. Its 5,000 employees serve more than 25,000 customers in more than 100 countries. Through a combination of industry-leading instruments, accessible scientific expertise, easy-to-use software and a full range of global support services, Agilent has managed to ride the downturn and continue pushing the envelope in life science and chemical analysis. One of its key portfolios is in advanced liquid chromatography (LC) instrumentation.

The recently launched Agilent 1200 Infinity Series is the newest addition to Agilent’s well-established LC portfolio. The 1200 Infinity Series is the world’s most reliable, secure and trusted LC module and has improved sensitivity, full compatibility with existing HPLC methods and is upgradeable with any new or enhanced module. The Series is expected to improve accuracy, workflow and productivity in the pharmaceutical, research, and food, drug and environmental testing industries. It reduces solvent usage with the 1290 Infinity LC and the 1.8 um RRHD (rapid resolution high definition) columns, enabling faster analysis, shorter run times per analysis and reduction in solvent usage. In liquid chromatography (LC), continuously achieving more sensitivity and the ability to detect contaminants at minute trace levels is the name of the game. LC is a technique commonly used to separate a mixture of compounds, in biochemistry and analytical chemistry in order to identify, quantify and purify the individual components of the mixture. LC has been around for decades but recently a few countries including Korea, Vietnam, China, India have been
investing in standards and practices in analysis and testing. As their economies develop, the people are more aware and concerned with the regulations and safety e.g. in the food they consume, which propels these investments. This is where Agilent stands most to gain, and it even plans to venture into Myanmar and Nepal in the next 10 years. Agilent also has committed to improving its green technology. To date, the company has an impressive portfolio including Flash Chromatography instruments, Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SPF) which uses carbon dioxide instead of organic solvent, and the 1290 Infinity LC which when coupled with the Agilent ZORBAX Solvent Saver Columns can use 40% less solvent. There is also a growing trend towards Faster HPLC analysis using superficially-porous LC columns. Once again, Agilent Poroshell 120 LC columns have met this demand with resounding success. With the widest portfolio and most comprehensive instruments for chromatographic and spectrometric analysis, Agilent is well-placed to grow from strengthto-strength. ■
