Sample : Data consists of Twitter activity grabbed via Twitter’s public API February 20⒖ It consists of a collection of tweets for a small sample of 33 ‘Akan-speaking’ users. The list of Twitter accounts was kindly made available by indigenoustweets.com. ▶ Numbers : 89071 tweets, 38659 #hashtag instances, 7713 distinct #hashtag, 73873 @mentions, 33 @mention-ers, 13047 @mention-ees. ▶ Classification : The corpus of tweets was analyzed using social network analysis to extract networks representing: who-talks-to-who (as represented by @mentions) and discussed topics (as represented by #hashtags). .. .. Potential ▶ An Akan (or non-English) Twitter corpus can : ▶ reveal what people are talking about over time and topics of interest and their interrelationships ▶ track on-the-ground sentiment over the course of an event ▶ give valuable indicators of language mixing ▶ identify distinct patterns of distribution, e.g. phonetic spellings, forms of emphasis, phrases, collocations, etc. ▶ allow the construction of specialized statistical language models (N-grams) ▶ reveal linguistic groups and communities .. ..
