Tehran at Twilight Upmarket literary fiction by Salar Abdoh Praise for The Poet Game: “Ornate and ambitious . . . [A] complex, politically sophisticated story.” —New York Times Book Review “The Poet Game offers its own taut, moody spin to the spy-genre conventions . . . Abdoh delivers a surprising, smart thriller.” —San Francisco Chronicle Uncorrected manuscript available now

Page 1

Iranian author Salar Abdoh’s gripping third novel is a morally and politically complex thriller in the tradition of Graham Greene and John le Carré. • Salar Abdoh first came to prominence with his 1999 novel The Poet Game—which tells the tale of an Iranian secret agent infiltrating a NYC-based terrorist cell. His second novel, Opium, further explores US-Iranian relations, religious fundamentalism, and the effects of exile on the individual in a noir setting. Tehran at Twilight is poised to break ground as the standard bearer for contemporary Iranian fiction. A resident of New York, Salar is also editing Tehran Noir, the forthcoming entry in Akashic Books’ award-winning Noir Series (see Page 5). • Salar will be going on an extensive US tour in the fall of 2014, and will be submitted to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, the Miami Book Fair International, and the Brooklyn Book Festival. • The year is 2008. Reza Malek, living a modest, academic life in New York, is abruptly disturbed when he gets a call from his oldest friend, Sina Vafa. Sina was, like Reza, a child of the revolution; his family fled Iran for California with little more than the shirts on their backs after the Ayatollah Khomeini came to power. But with a terse phone call from Tehran, Sina resurfaces, and he needs Reza’s help. Once in Tehran, Reza finds far more than he bargained for, and his own life is in danger. Salar Abdoh offers a telling glimpse into contemporary Tehran, and spins a compelling morality tale of identity and exile, the bonds of friendship and the limits of loyalty.  • Previous Sales: The Poet Game and Opium were both published by Faber and Faber in the UK.

Pulitzer Prize–Finalist Lydia Millet’s eco-thriller for young adults is the third entry in Akashic Books’ new Young Adult/Middle Grade Black Sheep Imprint.

Pills & Starships Young Adult adventure for ages 13+ by Lydia Millet “The writing is always flawlessly beautiful, reaching for an experience that precedes language itself.” —Salon See page 3 for more Young Adult offerings Uncorrected manuscript available now

• Lydia Millet won a 2003 PEN Center USA Award for Fiction for My Happy Life, was a 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist for Love in Infant Monkeys, and a 2012 National Book Critics Circle Award and Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist for Magnificence. Her 2011 novel Ghost Lights was named a New York Times Notable Book. • This is Millet’s first novel for young adults, and it has broad crossover potential, with equal interest to teen readers and fans of eco-fiction of all mature ages. She’s published two novels in the Dissenters Series (for middle grade readers ages 8–12) that share similar themes to Pills & Starships. The first book in the series, The Fires beneath the Sea, was a Kirkus Reviews Best Children’s Book of 2011. • Her novels for adults and young readers alike have received multiple starred reviews from the trades, and her launch will be supported by an extensive nationwide book tour in the summer of 2014. • In this richly imagined dystopic future brought by global warming, a disintegrating society is run by “corporates” who feed the people a steady diet of “pharma” to keep them happy. Counting down the days till her parents are scheduled to die, 17-year-old Nat and her younger brother Sam rebel against the “corporates” their parents have hired to handle their last days. • Previous Sales: Magnificence: Netherlands (Karakter), France (Le Cherche Midi Editeur), Italy (Indiana Editore); Oh Pure and Radiant Heart & How the Dead Dream: UK (Vintage); Ghost Lights: China (People’s Literature Publishing House), France (Le Cherche Midi Editeur), Italy (Indiana Editore); The Fires beneath the Sea: Turkey (Ithaki).
