(Received December 24, 1999; Accetped September 21, 2000) Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in students’ ability to solve algorithmic problems and their conceptual understanding of questions in chemistry. Seventy-six eleventh graders were involved in this study. The results revealed that the students’ performance in these two categories were significantly different.
