Algorithmic Problem Solving and Conceptual Understanding of Chemistry by Students at a Local High School in Taiwan MEI-HUNG CHIU Graduate Institute of Science Education, National Taiwan Normal University Taiwan, R.O.C. (Received December 24, 1999; Accetped September 21, 2000) Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in students’ ability to solve algorithmic problems and their conceptual understanding of questions in chemistry. Seventy-six eleventh graders were involved in this study. The results revealed that the students’ performance in these two categories were significantly different. Students did significantly better solving algorithmic problems than they did understanding conceptual questions (p
