Statement of Educational Need The meeting theme for the 2017 NCSA/SCSA Annual Meeting is “Quality in Anesthesia.” The goal of this conference is to promote quality practices across the profession; from NC Medical Board opioid prescribing guidelines to assessing and treating cardiac patients in noncardiac surgeries. Other topics that will be addressed include: workplace culture, updates in pediatric and OB anesthesia, patient care related to chronic kidney disease, negotiations with insurers and reflections on race and medicine. The program will also include a Saturday session specifically geared towards residents and an ultrasound workshop intended for practitioners to improve their skills at performing truncal blocks.

Explain the new CDC guidelines for prescribing opioids. Discuss best practices for delivering anesthesia care in the setting of non-cardiac surgery for patients with cardiac disease. Describe current operational strategies for decreasing morbidity and mortality in cardiac surgery cases. Identify future trends in improving the care of cardiac patients. Explain current knowledge in pediatric anesthesia, OB anesthesia and treatment for patients with chronic kidney disease. Discuss ways to improve negotiations with hospitals and payors. Analyze challenges with race and medicine. Describe workplace culture and its impact on clinical operations.

Hands-on workshop entitled: “Ultrasound Guided Fascial Plane Blocks: TAP, QL, PEC/Serratus and Knee Infiltration” which is intended for practitioners of all skill levels who wish to improve their competency in performing truncal blocks (transversus abdominis plane (TAP), quadratus lumborum (QL), rectus sheath blocks) and PEC block infiltrative techniques, in addition to infiltrative techniques for knee surgery. This interactive workshop will feature small participant to-instructor ratios and a customized curriculum focusing on developing hands-on skills. Each technique will be taught by expert instructors using didactic sessions with dynamic multimedia presentations, live demonstrations and guided hands-on live model scanning. Workshop to cover the following: • Pectoralis I&II and Serratus Plane Blocks • Transversus Abdominis Block (TAP), rectus sheath and quadratus lumborum (QL) blocks • Pericapsular Infiltration of Local Anesthetics around the Knee • Opioid Reducing Strategy with Regional Anesthesia • Pharmacology of Liposome Bupivacaine Albert Einstein College of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 2.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
