Anger & Violent Behaviour Overview: Emotional state(s) such as anger, brought about by clinical conditions, substance abuse, emotional disturbance or circumstance, may range in intensity from mild irritation to intense fury and rage, in some cases resulting in violence towards the self and others. Tests such as the Adolescent Anger Rating Scale (AARS) can help to identify underlying conditions such as ADHD that might be causing the behaviour, while the Controlling Anger and Learning how to Manage it (CALM) programme teaches participants to monitor and understand their emotions to prevent problematic behaviour. The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory 2 (STAXI-2) distinguishes between the experience of anger from anger expression and anger control in order to investigate the impact on mental and physical conditions.

ARES Complete Scoring Software Kit

£278.00 (excl. VAT)

Includes 1 ARES Manual, Unlimited Use Scoring Software (USB Key), 25 Response Forms, 25 Short Response Forms.

The ARES was designed to be clinically relevant in identifying specific patterns of feelings, behaviour, and thinking that can be addressed in intervention programs. Results from the ARES provide both a general overview and an in-depth insight into the psychological and behavioral aspects of anger, all of which may be used to highlight important problem areas and inform appropriate interventions.

Application The ARES assesses tendencies towards inward and outward expressions of anger along with the range and duration of anger experiences. The ARES includes a full-length version and a short version (ARES[S]). The full-length ARES version provides a comprehensive anger profile, and consists of 75 items which yield 25 scores that assess aspects of anger that contribute to poor functioning and maladjustment. The ARES(S), consisting of 17 items, provides information across three major domains of anger and is an effective screening tool for identifying youth with problematic anger reactions.

Scales and Forms Internalised Anger • Arousal

Externalised Anger • Anger-In

- Psychological Arousal - Cognitive Arousal • Rejection

• Bitterness - Resentment - Suspiciousness

Reports Reports for the ARES and ARES(S) can be obtained using the online or software scoring options. There are two different report types:

• Assessment Report – provides detailed results from a single administration along with a detailed treatment plan based on the youth’s responses. • Progress Report – provides an overview of change over time by combining and presenting results for up to four administrations.

Software The ARES and ARES(S) can be scored using scoring software by entering responses from a completed paper-and-pencil administration into the software program. The software is available on a portable USB port drive. This allows the administrator to score the ARES, generate reports, and save the results on any available computer. The portability of the scoring software is most helpful to professionals who provide services to youth at more than one location.

Adolescent Anger Rating Scale (AARS) Areas Measured The AARS is a 41-item instrument that assesses the intensity and frequency of anger expression in adolescents. The items are consistent with behaviours identified in the DSM-IV™. Elevated AARS scores can help to identify adolescents who are at risk for diagnoses of Conduct Disorder (CD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Individuals indicate which behaviours they exhibit when angered and how often each behaviour typically occurs; the 4-point response scale ranges from ‘Hardly Ever’ to ‘Very Often’. Scores are reported for Total Anger and for three sub-scales measuring aspects of the adolescent’s typical anger response pattern: Instrumental Anger, Reactive Anger, and Anger Control. The AARS Professional Manual provides directions for administration, scoring and interpretation (including case examples), as well as information about the development and validation of the instrument with students in two age groups: middle school (Grades 6 to 8) and high school (Grades 9 to 12). Statistical analyses support the use of the AARS in both clinical and research applications. Therapists who employ anger control training may find the AARS a useful measure of behaviour change. The AARS can also be used to help practitioners select the most appropriate intervention program for the specific type(s) of anger the adolescent typically experiences.

Purpose To assess level and type of adolescent response to anger.

Age Range 11 to 19 years Self-report (individual or groups).

Time 5 to 10 minutes for individuals. 10 to 20 minutes for groups.

Anger Disorder Scale (ADS) Areas Measured ADS results provide a strong basis for developing appropriate intervention and treatment plans. A short version of the scale is available for screening or monitoring progress during treatment. Key features of the test include: • Assesses anger as an independent problem, rather than as a secondary symptom of another issue. • Uses an Anger-In/Anger-Out model which not only examines the physical aggression resulting from anger, but also the cognitions associated with anger that may be a part of affective aggression. • Items on the Anger Disorder Scale (ADS) were initially based on criteria being developed for an anger disorder that may be added to future versions of the DSM. • Helps clinicians assess both the internal experiences and expressive patterns of their clients’ anger. • Provides a strong basis for developing appropriate treatment plans. The multi-dimensional structure represents 18 sub-scales distributed across five domains of emotions: • Provocations Domain: Scope of Anger Provocations, Hurt/Social Rejection.

Purpose To measure clinically dysfunctional anger by self-report.

Age Range 18 to 76 years.

Time Short version: 5 to 10 minutes. Long version: 20 minutes.

Includes 25 AutoScore Answer Forms and 1 Manual.

This self-report inventory makes it possible to routinely screen children and adults for aggressive tendencies. The Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) measures an individual’s aggressive responses and his or her ability to channel those responses in a safe, constructive manner. The AQ consists of 34 items, scored on the following scales: Anger; Physical Aggression; Verbal Aggression; Hostility; Indirect Aggression. A Total Score is also provided, along with an Inconsistent Responding Index. The test can be hand scored or administered and scored using the AQ CD, which also allows the user to print out a detailed interpretive report on the spot. In clinical settings, the AQ’s five sub-scale scores provide a level of detail that is particularly useful for treatment planning and outcome measurement. The simplicity of the AQ makes it an excellent choice for documenting need for service and focusing rehabilitation efforts. In other institutional settings (schools, businesses, military installations, and geriatric or convalescent hospitals) it can be used for both screening and programme evaluation.

The CALM program teaches male participants to monitor and understand their emotions in order to prevent problematic behaviour. 24 sessions teach participants the skills necessary to reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of anger to lessen the likelihood of aggression. The CALM sessions are practical, highly structured, sequential and designed for delivery to groups of adolescent and adult males at risk for inappropriate, violent behaviour, and in many cases, criminal recidivism. Personal assignments, modelling, role-play, teamwork, and self- and peer-evaluation are used to teach and promote lasting change of inappropriate and unproductive thought and behaviour patterns. The complete CALM Program includes 6 comprehensive group leader guides with instructions on how to deliver the 24 group sessions; an individual workbook of exercises and personal assignments for each group member; a master package for group leaders containing participant handouts and overheads; and an audiotape that features relaxation exercises and educational game scripts (copies can be made free of charge). The CALMER program is a follow-up to the CALM program. The CALMER program contains exercises that help clients increase control over their own belligerent, hostile attitudes or aggressive, violent behaviour patterns. The program consists of a standardised intake plan and group-intervention sessions. Non-psychotherapeutic personnel who have completed a short training programme can administer the CALMER. It is ideal for inmates, probationers and young offenders who have committed violent acts in the past. The workbook has a Year 7 reading level.

The Novaco Anger Scale & Provocation Inventory (NAS-PI) Areas Measured The NAS-PI assesses anger in relation to psychological functioning and physical health. It aids understanding of how particular individuals experience anger and what kinds of situations provoke it. Key features include: • A self-report questionnaire in two parts: the 60 NAS items focus on how an individual experiences anger while the 25 PI items focus on the kinds of situations that lead to anger. • Can distinguish between forensic inpatients who are likely to assault and those who are not and can also be used to predict potential for violent behaviour in the community following hospital discharge. The NAS-PI produces scores separately for the experience of anger and the provoking factors. Total NAS Score: General inclination towards anger reactions based on the first three of four sub-scale scores. • Cognitive (COG): Justification, Rumination, Hostile attitude and Suspicion. • Arousal (ARO): Intensity, Duration, Somatic Tension, Irritability.

Purpose To assess anger in relation to psychological functioning and physical health.

Age Range 9 to 84 years.

Time 25 minutes.

State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory - 2 (STAXI-2) Areas Measured This 57-item questionnaire was developed to assess the intensity of anger as an emotional state (State Anger) and the disposition to experience angry feelings as a personality trait (Trait Anger) and to measure the way these two components contribute to medical conditions such as hypertension and coronary heart disease. The manual discusses the potential effects of anger on blood pressure, coronary heart disease and other medical and psychological disorders. The metric clearly distinguishes between the experience of anger from anger expression and anger control which is crucial to investigate the impact on mental and physical conditions. STAXI-2 includes six scales plus an Anger Expression Index (an overall measure of total anger expression). The six scales are as follows: The State Anger Scale assesses the intensity of anger as an emotional state at a particular time. It has three sub-scales.

Purpose To measure the experience, expression and control of anger.

Age Range 16 years and older; individual or group.
