Building the Next Generation of Readers
F
ostering a love of reading in young people has always been paramount to the mission of public libraries. Reading truly opens worlds and teaches children to be more empathetic. Dr. Seuss said it best, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” The Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) remains committed to helping build the next generation of readers with our Every Child Ready to Read program. In 2016, the library provided early literacy skills to more than 47,000 children and their caregivers. We invite you to attend one of our weekly classes at all 15 of our libraries for children ages birth through five. See the schedule of events on pages 12 and 13 for details.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” —Dr. Seuss We are also committed to making sure our county’s students have access to the best books and electronic resources in order to nurture reading skills and improve academic success. With SAIL, Student Access to Improved Learning, all public school students now have special fine-free library accounts that provide easy access to books, eBooks, magazines, online encyclopedias, educational DVDs and other library resources. SAIL also allows students to use premium resources like Lynda.com courses, language learning from Rosetta Stone or BrainFuse for online homework help. We plan to offer this special account for private and homeschooled students in the near future. AACPL offers the best materials no matter your age, so we invite you to stop in to any of our libraries and check something out to broaden your horizons. We also have thousands of eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines available to download at anytime.
We look forward to seeing you and wish you….
Happy Reading,
Ft. George G. Meade Centennial Celebration: 1917 - 2017 AACPL is proud to participate in the Fort Meade Centennial as well as mark the anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I with a variety of programs across the county. “Why I Support the Library Foundation” Long time Anne Arundel County Public Library Trustee Simmona Simmons knows a lot about libraries. A Special Projects Librarian at UMBC’s Kuhn Library in Catonsville, where she’s worked since her undergraduate days, Simmona has first-hand knowledge of the challenges and satisfactions of working in a large research library. Simmona accepted the invitation to be on AACPL’s Board in part because she wanted to learn more about how public libraries operate and the way they serve their customers. “University libraries are focused on making sure students and staff have access to scholarly journals, books and databases--all the things that give them the information they need for research,” Simmona explained. “Public libraries have a broader mission—to meet the needs of learners of all ages Trustee Simmona Simmons at the Severna and abilities, with many different interests,” she added. Park Community Library. A Severna Park resident since she was a young girl, Simmona remembers Photo by Karen Mansbridge. going to the Severna Park Library when it was located in a house, before the current location was built. “I didn’t go to the library a lot as a young child, but when I learned to drive I visited much more. I loved to go to read magazines and check out books.” Simmona has words of praise for what’s available at the library in addition to reading materials, “I think some of the most important services at our library are the homework resources and the help with resumes and job searching. Our library does so much more than just supply books.” When asked why she supports the Library Foundation, Simmona quickly answered, “Because I am very impressed with Anne Arundel’s libraries. I know we use our resources well. I would compare it to any library system in the state in terms of how we maximize the funding we receive.”
The Legacy of Learning: Member Profile The Foundation’s Legacy of Learning Society recognizes donors who remember the Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation in their will. Leaving a bequest in a will is one of the most effective, and affordable, ways a donor can support a non-profit organization close to their heart. AACPL staff member, Donna Denny, was among the very first members of The Legacy of Learning Society. As Executive Assistant to AACPL’s CEO, Skip Auld, Donna well understands the important role private support plays in enhancing the library’s ability to serve our community. “I was in the room when the AACPL Foundation was born,” Donna relates. “Since then, I’ve been very proud to watch it grow and accomplish what it was created to do. The Foundation continues to expand its potential, due to the hard work and dedication of many people. Philanthropy is a labor of love, and it gives me great pleasure to know I can continue to benefit the Foundation Staff member Donna Denny at Library when my work is done.” Headquarters. Most donors are able to make a larger gift in their wills than they can during their lifetimes. There can also be significant tax benefits to making a bequest to a non-profit such as the Anne Arundel County Public Library Foundation. Members of The Legacy of Learning Society are feted annually at a special dinner and receive other benefits. If you are interested in learning more about joining The Legacy of Learning Society contact Foundation Executive Director Ann Glenn at

The women of West Annapolis are on a mission. On the evening of Thursday, January 12, more than 35 met at the West Annapolis home of Katie Cooke and, in just over two hours, contributed close to $25,000 in gifts and pledges to a fundraiser its hosts labeled, “Not Your Grandmother’s Library.” Their goal was to raise $25,000 to name one of the study rooms in the new Annapolis library in honor of the Women of West Annapolis. They made their goal and gifts and pledges continue to come in. “This kind of neighborhood focused fundraising effort, in a volunteer’s home, was the first of its kind ever held for the library,” said Library Foundation President, Amy Bartholomee, “the women of West Annapolis wanted to show their love for the Annapolis library and its central part in the life of their community.” Event host Katie Cooke was joined in her planning work by fellow West Annapolitans Kristen Olson, Bess Langbein and Christine Feldmann. In keeping with the evening’s theme, library staff were on hand to demonstrate a sampling of high tech library offerings including a new SMART Table, a virtual reality headset and a 3D printer. Guests were able to experience how these tools enhance early literacy and support the library’s STEM programming. “The library brings so much to everyone in our community. It’s an invaluable resource for young and old and we wanted to do our part to support the Foundation’s fundraising efforts,” said Katie Cooke, host of the event. Library staff in attendance included Chief of Public Services and Branch Management Cathy Hollerbach, Regional Supervisor Gloria Harberts, Eastport-Annapolis Neck Community Library Manager, Michele Noble, Virtual Services Manager Stephanie Petruso, Public Services staff member Kt Zawodny and Development Specialist Julie Kizer Ball. Funds raised through the event will be added to Beyond Your Expectations: The Campaign for the Library, the Library Foundation’s major asset-building effort now in progress.
