SLAVE PORTS, SLAVERIES and RESISTANCE in the NORTHERN CARIBBEAN: HAVANNA and KINGSTON Field trip to Cuba & Jamaica Length, March 4-31, 2011 (27 days) Subjects The importance of the port of Havana as the Caribbean’s biggest slave port was the result of Spanish Sugar slavery during the 19th century until the emancipation act in 1886. Hundreds of thousands of slaves reached the port of Havana and other smaller ports of the island and were distributed to the sugar and Tabaco plantation. At the latest 1820 Cuba replaced Saint-Dominguez and Jamaica as the worldwide most powerful motor of sugar industries. After the foundation of Kingston in the early 18th century, the city was growing fast because of the industrial development of sugar industry on the island. Kingston remained as illegal slave port after the formal end of slave trade in 1807 and served as Caribbean intersection between North-, Southand Central American ports. The course includes units at the University of Havana (March 4-9), the Center of the association of writers of Cuba (March 13-17) in Cienfuegos as well like at the University of the West Indies in Kingston (March 19-23) and the Community Center in Maroon Town at Cockpit Country (March 2431). in Jamaica.
