ALBERTA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

// 2014/2015

DEAN’S MESSAGE Our work at the Alberta School of Business is marked by a commitment to open and rigorous inquiry, intense and informed discourse, and an ambitious scholarly and educational agenda. Each member of the School of Business community contributes to the research, education, engagement and impact that defines the School and has a meaningful influence on the world around us. I would like to acknowledge their extraordinary commitment, accomplishments and talents that make us who we are today—they are a truly dedicated community, breaking new ground with vision, strength and purpose. 2014-2015 has been a year of tremendous growth and achievements in many areas. One—among many—for which I am extremely proud is our School’s Financial Times MBA ranking—86th globally and third in Canada (tied with Queen’s University)—the School’s highest ranking ever on the FT index. The FT ranking is by far the premier assessment of the quality of MBA programs worldwide. Criteria include career progression of alumni (assessed by salary), research strength, and diversity of students and faculty. It is an independent, objective measure of the contribution of the Alberta School of Business and a validation of our excellence. As part of our ongoing commitment to increase relevance and impact of our business research and teaching, we will be enhancing our core curriculum through a targeted focus on entrepreneurship, energy and the environment, international business, and leadership. Recognizing that these areas align with our economic environment, funding potential, and academic expertise, allow us to leverage many of the strengths and opportunities of being based in Edmonton and Alberta. I am also thrilled to recognize that our faculty continue to push the boundaries of research and business applicability with their numerous awards in various globally competitive categories. This diverse group of experts demonstrate their leadership by conducting impactful research and engaging in conversations that are relevant to communities (and policy-making) at home and around the world. Finally, I am most proud of our students who continually strive to challenge themselves—in the classroom and in their communities—and develop their leadership strengths. For us, achieving excellence means providing them with the most competitive, relevant and impactful business education available. In the year ahead, I look forward to participating in dynamic activities and events for our centennial year—2016—a year that promises to celebrate the importance of where we have been and what’s to come. I hope you will join us. Joseph Doucet Dean, Alberta School of Business

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Entrepreneurship@UAlberta is a cross-faculty, studentfocused initiative, led by the Alberta School of Business working in partnership with stakeholders like Startup Edmonton, TEC Edmonton and the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation. The spirit of the initiative is to catalyze and sustain an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. This is achieved through student development at all levels by combining good business fundamentals with a rich, mentored learning environment and strong partnership networks. Our vision is to leverage our internationally recognized faculty and staff in entrepreneurship, our experience in entrepreneurship programming and our established external networks to create an infrastructure for continuous support of entrepreneurship and innovation.

While reflecting on the global nature of Alberta’s economy and the interconnectedness of international markets, the school recognizes the strategic importance of international business as an area of focus. In addition to research that connects Alberta and global markets to relevant practices across all business functions, students benefit immensely from consistent exposure to the understanding of international markets and issues during their years of study.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• The first cohort of the Master of Financial Management (China) program graduated in fall 2014. An opening ceremony for the second cohort took place in Shenzhen, China.

• The interdisciplinary undergraduate course Entrepreneurship 101 was oversubscribed for the fall 2014 semester with students from across campus. • Professor Michael Lounsbury was awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, a seven year designation accompanied by a $1.4 million award. • BCom student Michael Tessier received one of the top five student entrepreneur awards in Canada at the 2015 Entrepreneurs’ Organization’s Global Student Entrepreneur Awards. • The Technology Commercialization Centre (TCC) was invited as an organizing partner for the 13th annual West Coast Research Symposium (WCRS). Sponsored by Kaufman Foundation, WCRS is one of the most prestigious, research-oriented technology entrepreneurship conferences in the world. The school joins partner co-organizers Stanford University, University of Southern California, University of Oregon and University of Washington.

HIGHLIGHTS: • 5% of undergraduate students participated in for-credit international activities in 2014, compared with the Canadian average of 2.6%.

• 38 partner institutes hosted Alberta School of Business students participating in international exchanges and study tours. • BCom student Felicia Liang was the first University of Alberta student selected for a prestigious internship with the Canadian Missions in China in a Canada-wide competition. She spent six months working with the Trade Section of the Consulate General of Canada in Shanghai and previously completed an exchange study term at Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea.

—a staffed physical space—ensures student entrepreneurs have access to expertise, mentorship and partner networks as they collaborate and cooperate in developing new ideas, companies and social ventures. This year, eHUB supported approximately 60 cross-faculty student teams and engaged over 200 students through various programs.

ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT Our world faces significant challenges in meeting its energy needs and the resulting demands on the energy and environmental sectors are complex and multidisciplinary. Leaders in these sectors need to leverage ways in which they can add value, while operating within an intricate and interwoven landscape of competing opportunities and challenges. Informed policy and strategic decision-making, as well as a bright and talented workforce, are crucial for sustainable growth. Building on Alberta’s economic and geographic strengths, the resource base of Alberta, Canada and North America, and its strong legacy of teaching and academic excellence, energy and the environment is a central focus at the Alberta School of Business.

HIGHLIGHTS: • Professor Andrew Leach was named one of the Top 100 Eco-Influencers on Twitter (by Corporate Knights and Brandwatch) as well as one of Alberta’s 50 Most Influential People for 2015 (by Alberta Venture) for the second consecutive year. He has recently been appointed Chair of the Government of Alberta’s newly created Climate Change Advisory Panel. • The Alberta MBA placed 3rd in the 2014 Corporate Knights Global 100 Sustainable MBA ranking. • 64 MBA students pursued the Natural Resources, Energy & Environment specialization in 2014/15. • 14% of the 2014 MBA graduating class found employment in the Petroleum and Energy industry. • Nearly 100 business leaders and government officials from India and Canada were brought together in Calgary for the India-Canada Energy Forum, to explore opportunities for collaboration in the energy sector. The forum was organized by the Alberta School of Business, Canada-India Business Council, and Petrotech Society of India.

LEADERSHIP The Alberta School of Business embodies a long heritage and commitment to leadership—a foundation that speaks to our vision: Leaders from Alberta for the World. As such, the school strives to holistically incorporate ‘leadership’— and its suite of associated skills—throughout our programs, competitions and events. Relevant university-wide initiatives including the Peter Lougheed Leadership College and our undergraduate embedded Certificate in Leadership embrace the school’s vision and enhance the school’s leadership presence beyond its core programming. Our faculty, students and alumni continue this consonant legacy within the role of business education and out into the broader community.

The event was hosted by the MBA Women’s Network. • 2015 Canadian Business Leader Award ceremony and dinner recognized award recipient Larry Pollock. ANNUAL REPORT

OPEN ENROLMENT PROGRAMS are offered to individuals through practical and applicable sessions designed to develop and strengthen knowledge and skills of today’s business professionals. CUSTOM PROGRAMS are crafted specifically for each organization to create a wide reaching transformational shift. From employee engagement to organizational development, Executive Education’s Custom Programs help address the real and deep issues that organizations face now and in the future.

23

OVERVIEW:

NEW PROGRAMS:

• Started 28 years ago by Dean Rodney Schneck, Executive Education initially offered programs solely for the Government of Alberta. Since that time, and particularly in the last eight years, programs and registrations have expanded far beyond the government to reach a wide variety of industries and individuals. Some of Executive Education’s newest clients include FGL Sports, Keller Construction, Alberta Energy Regulator and the National Energy Board.

• Rozsa Arts Management Program —offered with the sponsorship and support of the Rozsa Foundation, providing professionals working in Alberta’s arts and culture community with a specific knowledge and understanding of current best practices in board governance, strategic and audience development, human resources and finance.

• Of the 6,000+ registrations in the 2014/15 year, 2,000 were Government of Alberta employees, making up 28% of Executive Education’s revenue for the year. • Executive Education consists of a team of 20 employees working with over 100 instructors to offer 50+ programs, 16 certificate programs, and 35+ short courses in Edmonton, Calgary, and Grande Prairie. • Executive Education achieved an all-time high revenue of $7.127 million in fiscal year 2014/15, up 14% from $6.242 in 2013/14.
