ABOUT US
The GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE FOUNDATION aims to address one of the most complex and entrenched social issues in our community - disadvantage. In some parts of our community the level of disadvantage is at alarming and unacceptable levels - we are determined to ensure that this changes. Generally, people do not experience disadvantage when they have access to an education that enables them to obtain a life sustaining job, and they are not limited by a debilitating life crisis. The Foundation aims to ensure that these conditions exist for all members of our community. Since 1954, the GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE FOUNDATION has been bringing together individual community donors, corporate supporters and service delivery community partners to help achieve our mission. With our partners and donors, we work together to Build Better Communities by providing grants and delivering programs that help provide educational and employment opportunities and support people experiencing life crises. Our mission is to create long-term sustainable change for those suffering the effects of disadvantage. The Foundation is one the largest annual community grant makers in the country, but our focus is on long-term impact. While we are known as grant makers, our aim is to be change makers.

MESSAGE FROM CEO & CHAIRPERSON Bill Mithen & Murray Boyd.
One of our mantras over the last 12 months has been, “From fundraisers to grant makers to change makers.” This focus on change and not simply the means by which you achieve it has driven a whole of organisation approach that has resulted in new activities, new strategies and a strong financial result. Over the last 12 months the Foundation’s revenue grew by 11% to a little over $3.8 million. We are pleased to say that this is the largest 12 month revenue result in the organisation’s history. What is most important in this result is that our total community contribution, or, the financial dividend that the community received from the Foundation over the last 12 months, was in excess of $2.8 million, which includes some funds returned to the Foundation from previously allocated grants. At the same time, we have been able to grow our investment corpus. Our corpus creates income and provides the organisation with financial stability and sustainability. The corpus increased from $2.8 million to over $3.2 million and our clear, long-term goal is to grow our corpus to the point where the income generated, accounts for our operating expenses. This goal is still some way off, however our intent is focused on the long-term financial sustainability and efficiency of the organisation. We were delighted to be awarded funding from the Victorian State Government under their Jobs Victoria Employment Network program. This funding has allowed us to expand our operations within our GROW initiative and deliver specific employment services in Colac.
The funding has seen us take on our first Colac employee and has expanded our activities within GROW. The year has also seen us strengthen our learning culture which is one of the key elements of our Strategic Plan. We continue to see as critical our ability to question and investigate new ways of working. We are firm in the view that change happens when we use imagination, innovation, take risks and importantly learn from our actions. Creating a learning organisation culture has been a significant undertaking by everyone at Give Where You Live Foundation and we’re committed to continuing its progress. Equally important, and as big an undertaking, has been the development of the Give Where You Live Foundation’s Theory of Change. As far as we are aware we are one of a few foundations, and very few community foundations, to have developed a Theory Change. This theory, or hypothesis, outlines how we think we can catalyse positive social change. It details where we should dedicate resources, focus our efforts, advocate and act. It has been produced with the help of The Australian Centre for Social Innovation and had input from the board, staff, donors, corporate partners, service experts, loaned executives, life members, grant reviewers, community partners and workplace givers. It will become a key guiding and strategic document for the Foundation for the next decade and we are thrilled to have achieved such a milestone. In a community that has transformed so remarkably over the past few years, we are immensely grateful and humbled by the support that we continue to receive. Our Theory of Change makes it clear to us that we are no longer just fundraisers and grant makers but we are now able to influence, advocate, lead, convene, imagine, innovate and most importantly catalyse change using all of the resources to which we have access.
The continued strength and success of the organisation continues to be the result of the input of a great many people and organisations. Life Members for their history and guidance, workplace givers for their unwavering support, corporate and business partners for their contributions and generosity, several trusts and foundations for their faith and confidence, volunteers for their passion and energy, and of course community partners for their dedication, expertise and selflessness. To all of these stakeholder groups we offer our great thanks and appreciation. We have had several people that have served on the Board or Board Committees who finished their time with the Foundation during the past 12 months. Anne-Marie Ryan and Nick Klein both finished as Board Members. Their contributions in governance and strategic thought were significant and we would like to thank them for their input. Peter Maxwell and Vaz Juchima have volunteered their time as a Life Member and independent member of our Nominations Committee. Their input into Board Member selections and succession has been invaluable and we will reap the benefit of their wisdom for many years to come. Finally, we would like to thank the Board and staff of the Give Where You Live Foundation. We are fortunate to work with a group of individuals that provide expertise, passion, dedication, skill, knowledge, energy, compassion and good humour. It is a privilege to be a part of such a wonderful team and we both owe you all a great debt of gratitude. To all of these stakeholders groups, we offer our profound thanks and appreciation.

Chairperson’s Award The Chairperson’s Award is an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of an individual or group who have assisted the Give Where You Live Foundation in its Mission in supporting our local community. I am pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2017 Chairperson’s Award is KEVIN BROWN. Kevin, a long time supporter of the Foundation in his role of Plant Manager at Ford Geelong, actively nurtured the partnership between the two organisations in particular through his advocacy of our Workplace Giving Program and its accompanying Loaned Executive Program. Kevin was instrumental in ensuring that Ford left a legacy to the Geelong community through the Give Where You Live Foundation upon the manufacturing plant’s closure. Through Kevin’s advocacy, the Ford Manufacturing Workers Social Club contributed the amount of $25,000 that is now held as a named fund in our corpus. Kevin was also instrumental in ensuring that one of the last three Ford Falcons to roll off the production line was auctioned and the funds donated to Give Where You Live, seeing a further named fund opened in our corpus of $98,769. Kevin’s leadership and commitment to both Ford staff and the community during this very difficult time was truly exceptional. 4

COMMUNITY IMPACT 2016-2017 - GRANTS Providing Grants to organisations in the Geelong / G21 region aimed at addressing health, education and income disadvantage continued to be an important element of how the Give Where You Live Foundation made a difference over the 2016-2017 year. The Foundation supports grants in following three programs areas: HEALTH & WELLBEING GRANTS
LIVE & LEARN GRANTS
SURVIVE & THRIVE GRANTS
Grants within this program areas improve social inclusion and access, as well as physical and mental health.
Grants within this program area support education and employment as pathways out of disadvantage. Research confirms that ensuring access to, and supporting students through education is a pathway out of disadvantage. The education level of a person is an important predictor of future employment, welfare and health outcomes as well as improving a person’s ability to participate socially and economically within the community.
Grants in this area contribute to the basic levels of economic security including food, shelter, pharmacy and household goods for the most vulnerable people in our community. Low socio-economic resources are a major cause of entrenched and multiple disadvantage.
Good health is not shared equally across the region, reflecting the social determinants of health. Health status and the determinants of health vary markedly between the life stages, from conception through to infancy, early childhood, youth, adulthood and older adulthood. Analysis also suggests that socioeconomic factors have a large impact on health. As a result, the Give Where You Live Foundation provides grants related to: Healthy Ageing, Living with a Disability, Reducing Risky Choices and Life Crises.
As a result, the Give Where You Live Foundation provides grants related to School Readiness, Disengaged Young People and Education, Training and Employment Pathways.
Income inequality is a key issue facing our region and the resulting disadvantage continues to be concentrated in certain geographic areas. As a result, the Give Where You Live Foundation provides grants related to Homelessness and Housing Support, Financial Skills and Ongoing Financial Strategies, Regional Emergency Relief and basic Food Security.
Impact Summary The Give Where You Live Foundation funded 51 organisations in June 2016 to implement projects, programs and activities to make a difference in one of the three grant program areas from July 2016 to June 2017. These grants contributed to the following overall impacts during the 2016-2017 year:
Improved the quality of life for 453 PEOPLE of all ages living with a disability
Decreased the effects of social isolation for 2,295 SENIORS
Improved the physical, social, emotional, language and/or literacy skills of 1,199 CHILDREN so that they can start school ready to succeed
Increased the resilience of 3,594 CHILDREN to respond to risky situations 6

ENGAGE - YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY is a program of the Give Where You Live Foundation in partnership with Barwon Child, Youth & Family and Gforce Employment Solutions. The program educates and empowers young people age 15 to 25 years to effect positive change, by identifying youth issues that are important to them and making grants to organisations working on these issues. SUPPORT PROVIDED BY ENGAGE
• 1 2 YOUNG PEOPLE of diverse backgrounds participated in the first year of the program • Participants participated in a series of meetings through which they IDENTIFIED A YOUTH ISSUE important to them; developed grant round specifications, the application and review process, developed marketing materials round and then presented recommended grants to the Give Where You Live Foundation Board • P ROGRAM PARTNERS PROVIDED SUPPORT in the form of meeting space, transportation, communication, expertise, facilitation and personal support. The youth issue identified in 2016-17 was the effects of youth homelessness, including poor mental and physical health; the stigmas attached to being homeless and the isolation experienced while homeless; and the lack of access to nutritional food, personal hygiene and transitional/emergency accommodation. In November 2016 two grants were awarded totalling $25,000 for implementation December 1, 2016 through to November 30, 2017. Grant recipient

COMMUNITY IMPACT 2016-2017 - PROGRAMS The GROW initiative is currently operating within the second year of a ten-year plan. At the inaugural GROW Report Card event (May 2017) and the launch of the GROW Regional Dashboard we were able to report the following achievements against our 2020 target. Through the Give Where You Live Foundation’s GROW Initiative we are working, in partnership with G21 Geelong Region Alliance, to address entrenched place based disadvantage by reducing unemployment rates in the most disadvantaged communities in the Geelong / G21 region over the next ten years. GROW is a unique regional collective impact strategy which focuses on using local and social procurement; which happens through GROW signatory organisation choosing to buy local goods and services, and using the power of their buying, influence and employment to deliver social impact.
