Annual Transcultural/Integrative Healthcare Practice Symposium: Interprofessional Approaches in Managing Complex Cases Lee, E., Ely, L., Chong, H., Harper, B., Huth, R., Krajnik, S., Matthis, L., Phillippe, H., Sharman, J. – Radford University Interprofessional Transcultural Practice/ Integrative Medicine Steering Committee Team In our healthcare environment of tightly restricted reimbursement, mandatory outcome reports to national health care data banks, and an increased number of those suffering from chronic and acute disease, all professions of health and human services must analyze the benefits of integrated, interprofessional health care. Comprehensive national studies and outcome research suggest that integrated care is patient centered, cost effective, and results in significantly improved outcomes. Stress-related disease processes over life’s trajectory have been a focus of medical research for decades. In fact, US national studies of Healthy People 2010 and 2020 report that stress is a risk factor in meeting the majority of our nation’s health objectives, but one that can be reduced with interprofessional collaboration. The purpose of this oral presentation is to increase awareness of various interprofessional approaches used to manage the common health risk of stress and related disease within a pregnancy. Pain often occurs as a part of stress response. Acute and chronic management of stress related disease, especially focused on pain management, will be explored as it would be conceptually defined and treated by a traditional internal medicine practitioner, dietitian, obstetric/gynecological nurse practitioner, psychiatric nurse practitioner, a chiropractor, a physical therapist, an exercise physiologist, an occupational therapist, and a practitioner of oriental medicine. The methods used will be a case presentation of a 32 year- old female with a pregnancy-triggered migraine. The interprofessional approaches will be discussed briefly and a method to coordinate the team of providers will be proposed. This presentation also serves as an interest alert for a more indepth conference sponsored by the Transcultural/Integrative Medicine Symposium that will occur on April 22, 2016 at Radford University. Bearing the same title and using the same case study, the actual interprofessional practitioners will discuss their science, conceptual framework, and offer a practice-focused, hands-on workshop in the afternoon.
