New record and distribution extension of Hylodes lateristrigatus (Anura: Hylodidae) in Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil Rodrigo de Oliveira Lula Salles1*, Nicholas Passos2, Henrique Wogel1,3, Marcos Bilate1
The genus Hylodes Fitzinger, 1926 occurs in southeastern and southern Brazil, associated with rheophilic habitats in the Atlantic rainforest (Haddad and Pombal, 1995; Nascimento, Pombal and Haddad, 2001). Currently, the genus comprises 24 species, divided in four species groups: H. asper, H. glaber, H. lateristrigatus and H. martensi group (Haddad and Pombal, 1995; Haddad, Pombal and Bastos, 1996; Frost, 2010; SBH, 2010). The Hylodes lateristrigatus species group is the most species rich, currently comprising 17 species (Canedo and Pombal, 2007). Hylodes lateristrigatus occurs in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states. In the State of Rio de Janeiro, the species occurs in the Colonia Alpina, Municipality of Teresópolis (Type-Locality, modified by Bokermann, 1966) and Municipality of Nova Friburgo (Canedo and Pombal, 2007). Herein, we report a new record of Hylodes lateristrigatus in the Rio de Janeiro State. During a field expedition in September 2010 at Parque Municipal Atalaia, Municipality of Macaé, Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil (22°18’31”S 41°59’58”W), at approximately 8:00 pm we collected two juveniles of H. lateristrigatus (Fig. 1). The specimens were deposited in the amphibian collection of the Museu Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ 71355– 71356). These two specimens bear a dark line in the thigh, not forming bars. This character is unique within the H. lateristrigatus group. Species identification was

further confirmed by Dr. Clarissa Canedo, a research specialist in this group. This record extends the known geographical distribution of H. lateristrigatus of about 55km from the nearest record in the Municipality of Nova Friburgo (Fig. 2), representing the northernmost record of H. lateristrigatus in the state of Rio de Janeiro. We are thankful to Michelle Ribeiro Quirino da Costa and Alessandra Alvarenga for the help in the field work. We thank Thiago Silva-Soares for the English review and Clarissa Canedo for confirm the identity of the collected material.
